This period when we "can't feel progress for a long time" is when most people give up. Luckly I endured through it in English and now am enduring with Chinese as well!

Amazing, this interview was great. Steve has an excellent level of communication in Mandarin and Cantonese. His Chinese level is outstanding, he's proficient. I was able to understand the whole conversation by reading the English subtitles of course. Btw, Jessie is a beautiful girl. 😍 Cutting to the chase, Mr. Kauffman is absolutely an inspiring man whose skills are worthy of being appreciated by anyone in the world 🌎. His willingness to learn any language and any culture is breathtaking. Picking up a new language means taking on a new challenge, a rewarding interest and whatever you want to do about it for your life. It requires a long time to do so.

This lady tried to defy those who criticize her Cantonese for her weird accent. But in reality, accent is the only thing when people distinguish locals vs non-locals. No matter how long you lived in Paris, you are "distinguished" and better not try to represent youself a "native French speaker", even passed C2 exam in my opinion.
@davidlau7762

yeah by linguistic fascists perhaps. It's mean to criticise people's accents.
@npwy1408
@npwy1408 Жыл бұрын
Ability to differentiate, e.g. differentiating between "proficient" and "native" is important in intellectual conversation. Obviously the lady was not being respectful by representing herself as native to hold a Cantonese interview with Polyglot.

@@davidlau7762 I don't see this lady put herself in a position of learner. She tried to interview... It's like, as long as I have the gut, I can "interview" you with French, for example, without a need to worry about how true natives think.

@c.d.c9425
@c.d.c9425 Жыл бұрын
Not at all. He speaks with a really strong foreign accent in Cantonese and his tones aren't 100 percent. But honestly, that's still really impressive - you can understand everything he's saying and his vocabulary is on par with a native speaker. Hell, I've spoken casual Cantonese all my life and i still sometimes mess up the tones. And he definitely has a wider reach in his vocabulary than I do.
