People that didn't get 60s and 70s prog as it was happening can be forgiven, because it was advanced, creative, visionary music from the future...and most people's minds are in the present and past. But people who still can't get it by now are even more regressive than the folks at the time. We have devolved, largely. Love your lists. I would concur on these brilliant gem: Sheherazade, Plague of Lighthouse Keepers, Tarkus, Echoes, Thick as a Brick, Tales from Topographic Oceans, Close to the Edge, Lizard, Atom Heart Mother, and Supper's Ready.

Oh man!! Love Scott's channel. So glad to see you guys do an episode together. It's like a supergroup hitting it off. Great list of epics, too. A lot of them are obvious choices but the whole talking about it is just awesome. I do have to point out that I am an Atom Heart Mother sucker as well. It's probably my favorite prog epic by PF along with Echoes. The composition itself is simply off the charts. Modern classic orchestral bliss. I'm also a Can superfan so I would highly recommend several of their epics here. They are just one of those one-of-a-kind genre-of-its-own kind of bands. Yoo Doo Right, Bel Air, Halleluwah, the 3-track medley of side 1 is one of the best 18 minutes in rock history. A big thank you for that little comment about Israel there, Scott. Really appreciate it. People around the world have no idea what's going on and what the country is going through. The world has gone completely insane. So again, a big thank you for a wonderfull episode and it's always great to give Van der Graff Generator, Reniassance some love. They really deserve it.

My own top 5 prog epics 5. Renaissance - Song Of Schehrezade A genuine masterpiece of symphonic storytelling - the kind of thing that Nightwish do so well these days, but this was an early example and stands out among a sea of imitators. Of course the best version is on the Live at Carnegie Hall album, and of course Annie's voice is just sublime. 4. Mike Oldfield - Taurus II - from the album Five Miles Out. This awesome track, taking up the whole of side 1 never seems to get any love, yet it's actually my favourite Mike Oldfield track, narrowly beating Tubular Bells Pt.1 into a close second place, and if you haven't heard it, check it out because it's a really cool mix of styles and genres in the best traditions of prog rock (and it's more rocking than Tubular Bells, which some listeners - not me though - consider a bit too "pastoral") 3. Van Der Graaf Generator - A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers VDGG are definitely an aquired taste, and Peter Hamill's vocals are not going to keep everybody happy (I'm looking at you George and Eric :) ) but this track is an amazing tour de force and will definitely grow on you, but it's probably not the best place to start your prog journey. 2. Pink Floyd - Atom Heart Mother Suite My second favourite Floyd epic - my first choice would be Shine On You Crazy Diamond, but the original album version of this is split into two tracks, neither of which meets the 15-minute requirement for this list, so in this case, AHM wins it. I really love the whole orchestration on this track and the psychedelic parts are quirky enough to keep me interested but not so weird as to make me want to skip them. This whole album is criminally underrated in my opinion 1. Dream Theater - Octavarium By far and away the best thing that DT have ever done in my opinion. Everything is just perfection here, and for the best experience check out the live version from Radio City in 2006. For me, this is Dream Theater's magnum opus by quite some distance

Hey guys, I'm a new viewer and I've been loving Pete's videos. This is a great one. Interesting to hear your takes on these iconic classics, but I'm shocked to see Pete recommend "Ocean Cloud" as one to skip. To each their own, but I've always loved Marillion's epics. I think they do the loud-to-soft-to-loud bit that Genesis kind of pioneered really well, and their songs are always about telling a story and taking you on a journey with many peaks and valleys. But I get what Pete is driving at, and they're not particularly a band known for their epics. "Grendel" being the other really huge epic that comes to mind for that band that is undoubtedly amazing-even if it borrows from "Supper's Ready" a bit too closely in places haha. Anyway, I love the show, love these videos. Incredible stuff! Would love to be on the show sometime to talk prog with Pete!

New listeners to Close To the Edge always seem amazed when that church organ blasts out. As I was when I first heard it. When I put on Atomic heart Mother I thought the wrong music had been put on a Pink Floyd album....It sounded like it was classical music, but I stuck with it. I like this one.

I’m going to expand the criteria into the metal side of prog, so some of my favorites prog metal epics are: "The Architect" by Haken "Devour Me, Colossus" by Ne Obliviscaris "Black Rose Immortal" by Opeth "Singularity" on Empath by Devin Townsend "White Walls" by Between The Buried And Me (14 minutes and 15 seconds is close enough to 15 minutes)

Another superb episode with Scot, pure fire! These for sure would be in my top ten 'mandatories' and were not mentioned by either of you: Second Life Syndrome by Riverside Dogs by Pink Floyd ( I'll take this over Echoes any day!) Anesthetize by Porcupine Tree - very surprised not to see this one make the cut...! Was very happy to see Scot pick In Earnest from A Place in the Queue by The Tangent. Got that album when it came out, think 2006? Love it to this day!

I've just realised that I haven't been viewing all of Pete's videos lately, I have now decided to watch and like at least enough of the videos that may not interest me as much just as a support to the channel as I've been watching in years and have gotten many great hours of entertainment from it.

Great episode, love to see one on epic albums, e.g. The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway doesn't have anything of epic length but is certainly an epic album. Other albums that tell a story are Misplaced Childhood, Power and the Passion by Eloy. I think Topographic Oceans is another epic album for different reasons. Echoes is my favourite PF track as well, and I would have given Shine On and Dogs honourable mentions. Were The Man and The Journey suites rather than long tracks, and don't they count because they were never committed to vinyl? Supper's Ready and Close To The Edge continue to flip flop between my first and second over time. On Marillion, This Strange Engine would win over Ocean Cloud any day, I'm kind of with Pete on the latter. Is Brave really a suite? As far as new stuff goes nice to see Merry Macabre get a mention, but for me much worthier than The Whirlwind, which I would have had in the second half as don't touch with a bargepole. From the Steven Wilson oeuvre I would have given call outs to The Sky Moves Sideways, Anesthetize and Raider II. Is The Incident a suite rather than a long track? Second Life Syndrome by Riverside (the track) might have even made it into the main list for me. Wonder where you guys might have put Black Rose Immortal, not listened yet but heard differing views.

Such a fun video to watch! The prog epics are all amazing because they really capture the essence of a genre that maybe only jazz or classical can equally do - visit and revisit themes, motifs, and make reference to passages through a wide musical and lyrical vocabulary.

OK, so I really haven't figured out a list of ones I can't recommend but I'll agree with one of the choices here, Yes' Tales of Topographic Oceans. Not bad by any means but I've never gotten into this one. Doesn't hold my interest. But here's my top ten epic recommendations: Rush-Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres, ELP-Tarkus, Tangerine Dream-Force Majeure, Jean-Luc Ponty-Imaginary Voyage, Sky-Where Opposites Meet, Mike Oldfield-Tubular Bells, Utopia-Singring and the Glass Guitar, SFF-Pictures, Egg-Long Piece No.3, Focus-Eruption.

Great episode! My two favorite contemporary prog metal epics: 1) Wilderun: The Unimaginable Zero Summer. A bit of a cheat at just under 15 minutes. Incredible arrangements and orchestrations with occasional death growls and clean singing. 2) Caligula’s Horse: Graves. Very melodic and emotional sounding prog metal with hints of djent. All clean singing.

I remember in the mid 1980s when I first got into prog. A good prog epic, for me, started with the phrase 'What's this nonsense?'. Several spins later, I was reluctant ever to take the record off the turntable. They can be so amazing.

I have a lot of love for Joni Mitchell's side-long Paprika Plains. The blend of classical piano, orchestra and Jazz fusion (inc bass from Jaco) are enough to make it, at the very least, Prog-adjacent.

@TheProgCorner Just so you know, Scot, I am on your side. To me, Tales is their best work. It's the most dense, the most packed in with surprises. I still listen to it and discover new things. I only recently really discovered side 2, and it hit me like a ton of bricks. I feellike one day the same will happen to side 4. Side 1 to me is just really God's music in its purest form. Almost too much for us to handle.

I refused to spend my hard earned money on crummy prog albums, so i got into jazz rock fusion. Jazz rock fusion is still going strong. Then i set up my studio and i now have 13 of my own albums i would rather listen to. Love my Les Paul Custom and my brutal Casio DG 20 digital guitar and my bongos. Also, i have gotten to appreciate Progressive Heavy Metal, many great bands from India, Turkey, Japan doing traditional music. German Ompapa and Polish polka music (precursor to jazz. I stopped buying music when i got my heart condition. I only have about 1200+ cds and my vinyl got destroyed in a flood in my basement. I can listen on KZbin on my Tascam Model 24 mixer and its free...that is why i got an awesome studio and alot of cool guns. Love my Moog Matriarch! My band is Big Blue Mountain and i only have a few songs on KZbin do to not copyrighting my music. Snork the Pork, my great harmonica song...check it out.
