Y'all, Jade absolutely does like Mai but he's spent so much of his life being used and manipulated by people that have pretended to be nice to him just to get closer to his attractive friends and family that he's lost a lot of self confidence and built a wall around his heart that he's convinced himself that anyone that treats him extra nice isn't because they like him. He purposely doesn't allow himself to have a crush on others because he's so used to being used as the middleman and then abandoned afterwards. So yes, he's pretty dense about Mai liking him but it's also because he genuinely doesn't believe that someone as "perfect" as Mai would like someone like himself.

Have you read the book? Because yes, that's exactly how it gets explained in the book. 💜 It's not just that Jade is the Captain of Team Oblivious, he's drawing on a lifetime of experience that has taught him that no-one is ever actually interested in HIM, to the point where the possibility that Mai (hot, talented, charming, and genuinely so nice) might actually be attracted to him does not seem possible at all. 😢 I like Jade, and he's so much fun, but his self image really is that no-one could ever want to date him, so he pours all his passion into enjoying good food and supporting his friends. Poor baby. (And if anyone reading this hasn't read the book, I highly recommend it, it's so cute.) ❤

@TheOtherDibbler Yes I have! I've re-read it multiple times while waiting for this series to finally air! That's why I wrote the comment out for all those other comments calling him dumb or oblivious. Since the KZbin version of the show cut out one of the flashback scenes from the uncut version of episode 1on IQiYi from high school/college that literally shows people approaching him just to ask him to pass on a gift to King or Uea (as he regularly does on a daily basis in the book as well), it's not very well established or obvious in this version that he's been the middleman HIS ENTIRE LIFE despite it being the literal title. This has led to his self confidence being absolutely wrecked and basically believing he's gonna be single for the rest of his life. I love his character so much in the novel because he's genuinely SO sweet and caring and such a bright and positive presence for those around him despite the years of mistreatment. I really wish the show will be able to follow the novel more closely so that everyone that hasn't read the novel can get a better idea of Jade's personality and why Mai basically fell in love with him at first sight. ❤️ Edit: clarification that the flashback scene is in the uncut version but left out of part 2 in episode 1 of the KZbin version

Before in the middle of lunch break, he ever save a dog that being a6used by a fried pork seller, he hold the dog and embrace him even though his shirt become dirty because what he did. He always caring about his surrounding, always help people, sacrifice himself for other people happiness, dealin with his friend love problems.
