In the beginning we all have to learn our scales Doh, Ra, Me....which is fine, we have to learn where the notes are, but you've never actually heard a tune that goes like that and learners soon tend to get bored with it. One thing I picked up from jazz players is working up and back down maybe two octaves of a scale in thirds (that is play every other note). It immediately starts to sound more melodic, more inspiring, and more like something you would actually play, and when you analyse what you're playing you realise that you are playing the triads of the key you're in. I heartily recommend this way of practicing scales, killing two birds with one stone, linking the scale with its triads. Still a staircase maybe, but a much more melodic one.

Excellent concept, Andy. A lot to ruminate on here.

Thanks. I like being reminded of how scales help focus attention, facilitating creative expression. Run up and down the stairs and then....dance and jump around ... and see what happens.

I try to think more of where I can go rather than what scale in what position...I also prefer to play more staff scales then regular scales as it really opens up your perception of the fretboard and music in general...✌️❤️💪

Little Sadie was nice and all, but I think we need an extended version of syncopated Carter style Home Sweet Home
