Steven Gilchrist! There's the Lloyd Loar of our age! Holy smokes! Like seeing Da Vinci at his drawing board. And a great player!

A friend of mine had a Gilchrist and it was the closest thing to a 1920s F5 I have ever heard. This side by side confirms what I had thought at the time when I played it.

Personally I have played several Lloyd Loar F5s ... and none of them came even close to his mandolin that I played . In fact I have had any other mandolin play as good as his..they practally play themselves ...... I sure hope he had an apprentice to carry on.... He has out-done Lloyd Loar at his own game... but jumps and valleys.... But in actuality Loar was trying to build in a factory , Steve o. The other hand only does a few thus has more time to perfect each one as much as possible.... there's a big difference when you only have to make as many as you can vs having to crank out a certain large volume...He's not going to let anything with his na.e on it leave the shop less than perfect... I'm sure Loar had some he considered his best work.. tha were probably as good as the Gilchrist mandolins are. Besides the tone, that neck on a Gilchrist is such a work of art. That fit your hands so good. A lot better any Gibson I've ever touched

It is one he wrote Tyler. I think he might call it Gnotucky. He lives on Lake Gnotuk in Australia.

My vote would be for the new Gilchrist. In this recording, I think it has a more pleasant, warm tone. To my ear, the Gilchrist is better balanced across the range of notes; the Loar sounds a bit punchy in the mid range. Anyway, that's one player's opinion.

The Lloyd Loar has a deeper sound, but the Gilchrist has clearer notes and chords.
