A full review of the Summer 2021 LEGO Harry Potter 76392 Hogwarts Wizard's Chess set. The set has 4 Minifigures, one of which is a special LEGO Harry Potter 20th Anniversary GOLD Minifigure! The rest of the set is a literal LEGO chess set and there's only one flaw in my mind: no studs to hold the pieces!

They made the right choice to not have studs. In the movie the pieces don’t jump up, they slide. And I also think it’s more asthetic to have no studs.

I think the smooth board is actually beneficial so that you can make quick moves w/o having to stick the piece to a stud. But, the gray part on the black bishop should've been black. And I greatly prefer the underside to be more plated off (also those tire pieces will degrade over time from being rubbed while used). Other than that, great set!

i remember really loving the chess scenes from harry potter when i was a kid, the way how those giant stone pieces moved around and destroyed each other with swords and mace was the coolest thing ever. eventually i got a wooden chess board in my birthday and played chess with my brother and family lots of times. seeing that set brought some memories back :)

Would've bought this instantly if it had studs on the board. One jumper plate in the center of each field plus 1x4 & 1x2 tiles around it. That would've increased the piece count but also added a lot of play value. It baffles me that a LEGO chess board does not take advantage of what sets their building blocks apart from other toylines.

Gotta disagree. I think in theory, jumpers sound like a good idea, but practically speaking the pieces don’t actually need to be held down. It would just slow down the pace of the game if you’re pressing them in and pulling them off of the stud every time you want to make a move.

Yeah I'm not sure whether the studs (or lack thereof as the case may be) is a good thing or a bad thing. A Lego Chess set would be cool but I would want to choose the one that is the most playable.

This is actually fairly priced for a chess set. Yes you can get a plain ol plastic/cardboard set for $10-20. But once you factor in the LEGO building/figure aspect on top of the license then imo it comes out as a fair deal. Chess sets can be pretty pricey too depending on the quality you go for. Sometimes custom pieces and boards alone can go for hundreds $$$

I got this as a huge chess fan and I love it. Not the most practical all though I do like that it doesn’t have studs. It would get too crowded on the board to worry about trying to stick them on perfectly. I prefer to display it but Definately some novelty to playing with a lego chess set that I love.

I was planning to get this set at my local seller but couldn't get it because Lego made it exclusive to Lego shop here in Europe, some webshops sell it but at the same price or higher than lego shop. I'm noticing a trend where lego is making sets which they already know will sell better than other exclusive to lego shops and/or larger warehouses. Now i'm not getting this set at all because of all the shenanigans they've been pulling lately.

8:03 that's really interesting that there's absolutely nothing about chess playing in the manual because for the iconic chess set there is a page that shows how the pieces are able to move. Now the big problem is that chess is a complicated game in Lego manuals cannot use a lot of written information because it has to be multilingual.

Is it me or the black aren’t totally black ? The helmet for example, are they black, pure black like the old black helmet from old castle theme or are they a kind of dark grey ? (Very important for me because I want à lego chess set and want old helmet in the right colors (black and old dark grey, would find a way to use the white helmet and rework the pieces because I want the helmets for my castle mini figs IF they are BLACK).

Okay but does anyone else notice that the face of the actual actors in the box are odd? Harry is normal. Hermione’s age is correct but not with that hair, and Ron is the Ron face from the first film on the fifth films body and hair. It’s just odd!

Not even just for being in a moving vehicle, but if you accidentally knock the table, studs would stop the chess pieces sliding about. Esp useful with children playing, and the pieces being light and of relatively low friction

Very good analysis, Ryan. Agree, omit studs to hold the figures in place is a flaw of a studs producer. Especially when these 2pcs 2x4 already ruin a clean look of a 8x8 CB, I don't see a reason not to apply jumper tiles. But I assume, they convulsive avoid to repeat the better implemention of 40174 Iconic CB. To omit the opportunity to teach 10+ something about chess is also a wasted chance. Instead of 3 whatever wizcards, why not offer two stickersheets A-H,1-8 and show some magic moves of Chess Masters.

Great set, easy to build but the bottom is utter garbage. There is no support for the game board on top. Nothing underneath makes sense to me. The corners aren’t secure and easily break apart. There are weak spots along the edges. From a design aspect this is terrible. What would be much better is to have a solid peg board for the top to fit onto. My daughter and I just kept asking what the hell these people were thinking. Sure it looks great, but it’s too fragile to do anything with! We had to add extra pieces for it to be useful. All in all though, great set. Love the pieces.

I'm glad this doesn't have studs because not only technically is it movie accurate but also chess accurate, you don't see normal chess boards having studs so why should this? the pieces can stand up fine without them and it's hassle putting them down on the stud then taking them off it again everytime when it's just faster and more enjoyable just not having to do that and looks aestetically better without it, you guys are definietely in the small minority.
