Few interesting things about the film: -The film actually goes by the tropes of a pulp dark fantasy story, something Mandy is reading in the film, but updated as a grindhouse revenge story. We have a barbarian hero on a path of revenge (Red with his axe), a pure soul and princess like love interest (Mandy), we have evil wizard and his cult followers (children of a new dawn) and demons from hell for a hero to slay (bikers), we even have a Conan like weapon forging scene. -Red is a recovering alcoholic. We see him refuse a beer from his coworker in the beggining and later we learn that he has a secret vodka bottle stashed in the bathroom. This is the reason why after experiencing trauma he falls so easily into drinking and drugs abuse. -Red's axe is shaped after letter "F" form the band "Celtic Frost" logo. -The Cheddar Goblin commercial was made by the same guys who made "Too many cooks" for Adult Swim. The whole scene is actually to showcase how the world isn't affected by what's happening to you. Even if you've experienced the biggest tragedy in your life, a dumb cheese commercial will still be on TV like nothing happened. -The skinny biker that gets killed by the neck snap is actually a female. -Red says his "44" shirt is his favorite. At the end of the movie in that short flashback/vision scene, we see that this is the shirt he's wearing while first meeting Mandy. -The end of the movie, with Red driving into the otherwordly wasteland, probably symbolizes his mental state and what the movie is about in general. He is the man who experienced tragedy and gets consumed by grief, hate and substance abuse with no healthy way to cope. Even if he succeded in his revenge quest, he lost the love of his life, and there's nothing in the world for him, thus he sees everything around him in that way, which kind of makes this movie an anti-revenge story.

Mandy says Jupiter is her favorite and has a storm that's been raging for thousands of years, later on the chemist refers to Red as a "Jovian warrior sent forth from the eye of the storm". Conversely Red says his favorite planet is Saturn, Saturn within the occult and esoteric realm has a lot of spooky, witchy associations much like Mandy's unique air and general demeanor. Their choices of favorite planets could be said to represent each other.

I tell ya, this film was the first reminder in a long time that Nicolas Cage is, and always has been, a great actor. Mandy might be my favorite film of the 2010s. Even beyond the style, rewatches reward the viewer with themes that become more apparent once you aren't totally distracted by the flawless visual presentation.
@qqw55753 жыл бұрын
Can you please elaborated more about themes in this movie? Genuinely curious.
@banjoj85793 жыл бұрын
@@qqw5575 One of the themes I've seen (or at least concluded to in ym head) is that of man's ego and ambition and the games of power we play and how usually women have to deal with the aftermath and fallout. I think back to the story of the Starlings and what it means to live in a man's world. But don't get me wrong it's also a ridiculousy fun and goofy genre exercise, so I'm not saying it set out to be high art with a lot of subtext, but I feel like that subtext made it's way in regardless.

Brandon should consider Videodrome. It's more sci-fi, but also a surreal journey for the protagonist and messed up villain death scene. Also, excellent synth film score by Howard Shore. ( Might be worth using the Criterion version, the original release was a poor quality transfer ) Also, worth checking out is Beyond The Black Rainbow by the same director who did Mandy. More vibrant use of color and synth music score.

It's a Conan style fantasy adventure. The chemist is the Wizard who makes the grey, super acid for the cult. That pan of liquid he's dipping the paper into with his bare hands is pure lsd. The dude is in another realm at all times. In my head canon, he's a friend of Jeremiah from the hippie days. Perhaps the chemist and his miracle psychedelic goo is the catalyst for Jeremiah beginning the cult in the first place? I believe the cult began selling the grey goo to regular bikers and over time abusing the goo, those bikers transformed into monsters. It's a classic Robert Howard adventure. Tor publishing is even referenced as the name of the author of the Howard-esque fantasy adventure novel Mandy is reading at the store.

This director also did Beyond The Black Rainbow a few years before Mandy... It's also VERY good! Same striking visual style, color saturation, deliberate pacing, and same 'show don't tell" story telling with even LESS dialogue! The stand out in both films, for me, is definitely the SCORE. Mandy's score is great but Beyond The Black Rainbow's score is incredible!! 80s style synth-wave but not cheesy like Stranger Things. Its dope enough that I paid like $50 for the official soundtrack on vinyl! An actual analog recording too, sounds INCREDIBLE on my 90s Boston Acoustic system! PS: Your assessment of Mandy seeming like a music video is EXACTLY what Cosmatos was going for! Well, not a contemporary music video lol, more like 1970s-1980s metal bands that had a fantasy/D&D element to their album art. It's also HEAVILY influenced by the 80s Rock-Opera (if that's the right term) Heavy Metal. It's basically all that shit brought to life... PPS: The quote at the beginning are the last words of some death-row inmate from years back. Too busy watching your vid to look it up now but it's a pretty famous quote

I think thematically this film is an expression of anger at any cosmic entity, whether that be God or some other being. "Can't you see, all this [pain and suffering] was a part of your journey?" Cage responds "I am your god now" and then crushes his skull at the notion of any of his pain being meaningful. Then he burns the church, a religious symbol, and the film closes with a shot of what feels almost like an entirely different planet.
