Two doors: Ask person guarding Hell, "If I asked the other guard what's behind their door, what would they say?" -> Person guarding hell tells lie and says Hell (because the other person is guarding heaven, and would tell the truth) -> This is what's behind their door Ask person guarding Heaven, "If I asked the other guard what's behind their door, what would they say?" -> Person guarding heaven tells the truth and says Heaven (because the other person is guarding Hell and would lie) -> This is what's behind their door The part that might have thrown you off during the episode about this was that immediately after Rick explained this all as "what would the OTHER person say", Karl instead just asked "what is behind your door?" and so then both answers were wrong, and there was no further reclarification of the logic. Happy to see more Karl on the channel! Hope things are going well now

Not being able to tell if you're a clone or the original is one of the main concepts of the movie Infinity Pool. After the cloning operation, you wake up feeling exhausted and confused and they simply tell you that you're the original, but there's no proof and no guarantee. The original doesn't "just know" because the clone is 100% identical and they also "just know". That's kinda the point of a perfect clone, they have exactly the same memory of turning up at the location and agreeing to be cloned as you do.

Yup, it only works if you wake up in the same place and nobody's there to tell you if you're the original or not.

The thing with the doors is that by asking what the other person would say you guarantee that the answer is always a lie. Because the person who always tells the truth will answer (truthfully) with the lie that the other person would have given; the one who always lies would answer (falsely) with the opposite of what the truthful person would say, i.e. a lie. So whichever one you ask, they will answer with a lie about what the other door is, effectively giving you the truth about their own door. So if they answer “Heaven”, go through their door, if they answer “Hell”, go through the other door.

I think what Karl means by "How do I know which one is me" is that in this scenario the clone has all your memories and stuff as well. A true 100% copy in every way. You both remember doing and experiencing the same things from the day you were born until you meet. The clone *is* you physically and mentally. How would you know which one is actually you and which is the clone? You'll both be utterly convinced you're the "original". You say the real one always knows, but the clone knows exactly the same things you do and feels the same way.

@@cohenparsons947 You're applying a lot of logic to Karls train of thought here. I'm not sure that's the way forward! 😂 I'm with you, but I don't think that's how Karl heard it. They concurred when he asked if his doppelganger would be exactly the same. To me that sounds like they'll be the same mentally and physically. EXACTLY the same. Even the clone would just wake up at the hospital with your memories up until the point where you went to hospital and got your DNA extracted for this experiment. It'd be as if you both lived the same life up until the point where there was suddenly two of you. It's not where my mind would've gone if I was posed the same question as Karl, but that's why I love Karl. He has a way of seeing things from a different angle.

@@cohenparsons947 What's there to be convinced by? The phenomenon "doppelganger" isn't real in the first place and even if someone cloned you that clone wouldn't necessarily even look like you (Though you'd probably look related). The clone would just share your DNA. Not your looks and certainly not your thoughts and experiences. On a scientific level we were on thin ice as soon as the question was asked. There is nothing to convince anyone of here. Just the amusing musings of Karl.

I couldn't take the stress anymore and the tutors who I was working with seemed very pretentious and condescending that it made my blood boil. I eventually got so mad when I failed my second year because I had a feeling that the board of examiners were playing "favouritism" that I ended up falling out with my classmates and it drove me into terrible depression. It was exhausting so I left the damn place.

The two doors/paths riddle (I'm so bad at explaining this so apologies if I mess up): You can ask one of them, "Which path would the other guard say is the path to heaven?" It doesn't matter which guard you ask because they'll both give the same response. The best way I can explain why is through voicing out their thoughts. GUARD 1: "I must answer this question truthfully. I am guarding Hell. If this traveller asked the other guard where the path to Heaven was, he would point to my path instead of his - because he is a liar." *Guard 1 points to Guard 1's path* GUARD 2: "I must answer this question with a lie. I am guarding Heaven. If this traveller asked the other guard where the path to Heaven was, he would point to my path because he is telling the truth: I am guarding Heaven. However, I cannot tell the traveller this as I must answer their question with a lie. Therefore, I must direct them to the path to Hell." *Guard 2 points to Guard 1's path* Notice how they both point to the same path. This is the path you AVOID. Whichever path they respond with, go down the OTHER way and you'll make it to Heaven.

"Some time maybe good. Some time maybe shit." 😂You did that voice good. I don't know if I would want a double. I would have to be in some kind of doo doo in need of a double for me to go ahead and get one, like if I had been president of the United States and something happens. I'm glad I'm not an identical twin. One reason is because I wouldn't want to see myself all day. Every time I look up, it's me. I'm good with just looking in the mirror when I'm ready to look in the mirror, and that's it. The other reason is, Karl does have a point that, if the clone (or twin) commits the crime, they might think it's you, so you get punished for what they did. So I'm glad I'm not an identical twin. I wouldn't have minded a fraternal twin. Just not an identical twin. I mean, I would have loved the identical twin. But, yeah. Star Trek, good show. Star Wars, good movie. I like both. Sometimes Karl over thinks things. I think I followed what they were saying on the "one question for heaven or hell" part, but then after Ricky explained about himself lying and saying what Stephen would say, Karl took it to be as if they were talking about their own door, so they could have lost the viewer from Karl getting lost in the explanation. To be fair, I don’t know if this is true or not, but there may be more twins in Britain than most countries because I know a few sets of twins and triplets, but they usually from in-vitro fertilisation. Because you’re more likely to get twins with in vitro fertilisation, I think perhaps because the NHS will provide this for free in our country to people who can’t have children. There’s probably more test-tube babies over here than in other places that don’t have free healthcare.

I too was incredibly confused by Ricky's heaven and hell guard riddle until someone explained it to me in a way of asking "if I were to ask the other guard which door lead to heaven, what would they say?". - The guard who always tells the truth will tell you "he'll say it's the door behind him" because the one who lies is always trying to point you in the way of hell. Meanwhile the guard who always lies will tell you "he'll say it's the door behind me" because once again he is trying to point you in the direction of hell. The common factor here is the door behind the lying guard because the truthful guard will know he'll lie and tell you it's the door behind him, whereas the lying guard will tell you that the other guard will tell you it's the door behind him. In both cases the lying guard will try to point you in the direction of his door. It is still extremely confusing, and therefore the best solution is to simply hold up three fingers and ask one guard "how many fingers am I holding up?". The truthful guard will say three, and the lying guard will say otherwise. Therefore you have not only outsmarted the both of them, you have also outsmarted the one giving you the riddle by thinking outside the box and coming up with a simple yet effective solution, and they will either accept it, or tell you that's not allowed because their bruised ego can't take being outsmarted (as you can probably tell, I hate riddles).

@@stingersplash If the guards have no prior knowledge then logically they can't know how the other guard thinks, and that is pretty much why I hate these sorts of riddles because they require so stringently specific and illogical goalposts that forbids people from thinking outside the box, a trait that I think demonstrates more intelligence and logical thinking more than simply knowing the right answer to a very specific set of circumstances.

I honestly think Karl has a legitimate point about not knowing whether you're the clone or the original. Consider the hypothetical mode of transportation known as teleportation. There's the wormhole kind, where you walk through and appear in a completely different location in space, then there's the scan-and-reassemble kind where your entire body is scanned, that information transmitted to a new location, then reconstructed like for like. In the second case, you've effectively cloned yourself. The you or the clone would need visual stimulus to confirm whether or not you're the original. We can imagine a setup where you're teleported in the same room, and there's absolutely no visual indicator which is which. I guess at the very least, the clone has a gap in memory between being scanned and being reconstructed, which the original would have experienced. If that gap was insignificant, there'd be no perceivable difference
@NJH01
@NJH01 Жыл бұрын
The thing is you’re 100% right if you weren’t there or didn’t know about the clone but in Karl’s hypothetical he knew he’d been cloned and had met up with him so unless there was a trick where they were swapped he’d obviously know he’s the original Karl
@morganga
@morganga Жыл бұрын
@@NJH01 Doubt would creep in when you conclude the clone would be thinking the same thing. So it brings into question everything you think you knew for sure, because that's also what the clone would be thinking. I'm talking about the specific case where you step into one of two facing cubicles of a cloning device, close the curtain, the machine clones, and both of you open the curtain to stand facing each other. In the absence of any visual indication, like a big old sign above the cubicles saying "Original" and "Clone", You might initially think you're the original, based on what you think you know, until you realise the other version of you is equally confident, and that's not a reliable indication of the truth.

But in the teleporting instance, one is scanned, deconstructed and then reconstructed at a different location. So there is still only one of you. Exactly the same as before or a cloned version, but the 'original' you is gone. This reminded me about the movie 'The Prestige' - "It took courage to climb into that machine every night.. not knowing.. if I'd be the man in the box.. or the prestige."
@morganga
@morganga Жыл бұрын
@@MandyCaneLane I guess if you're being transported particle by particle, it'd be like a cut & paste. If just the reassembly instructions were transferred, and you're reconstructed from new material it'd be like a copy & paste, and hey presto, there's two of you. Actually, quantum teleportation is a reality, and it's the destructive kind, and has been demonstrated with things as large as a calcium atom! It wasn't a problem with "Living with yourself", if you had to dig yourself out of your own grave, that was a goooood indication you were a clone lol

Before watching, in case it hasn't been addressed, Ricky (though somebody I consider a borderline comedic genius... Along with Merchant) messed up the logical puzzle. He implied that the person in front of Hell door always lies and Heaven door always tells the truth . In which case, it's an easy solve with 'Is the sky blue?'. One question. If truth, Heaven. if lie, Hell. That's not the puzzle. Either of the guards could be lying or telling the truth and that has no indcation which door they're guarding. With those specific parameters, Ricky's solution now works and is the only way to determine what lies behind each door.

The idea of a clone being evil (or at least different) has analogies in biology and chemistry. Molecules have a handedness, like cloning a left handed glove into a right handed glove, same but reflected. Earth exclusively use left-handed amino acids and right-handed sugars. These molecules interact differently with their environment, for example some artificial sweeteners are real sugars, taste sweet yet pass through our organism without being metabolized because they have the wrong handedness.

"Derek Parfit and others consider a hypothetical "teletransporter", a machine that puts you to sleep, records your molecular composition, breaking you down into atoms, and relaying it to Mars at the speed of light. On Mars, another machine re-creates you (from local stores of carbon, hydrogen, and so on), each atom in exactly the same relative position. Parfit poses the question of whether or not the teletransporter is actually a method of travel, or if it simply kills and makes an exact replica of the user.[3] Then the teleporter is upgraded. The teletransporter on Earth is modified to not destroy the person who enters it, but instead it can simply make infinite replicas, all of whom would claim to remember entering the teletransporter on Earth in the first place" Smartest thing Karl has ever said! Also!! Ricky's riddle is WRONG. He should include that the question has to relate to which door they're guarding. But he doesn't. So there are INFINITE questions that's can get you the right door. Anything that you know is a fact Eg. What is my name? If he says anything other than Mandy it's hell What's 1+1? Anything other than 2 he's guarding hell What colour shirt am I wearing? How old am I? What's my address? Etc But the riddle as it should be - that he question can only relate to which door they're guarding, Ricky's answer is right Eg If I asked the other guy what door he's guarding Devil: the other guy would say he's guarding hell (lie because the angel would say heaven) Angel: the other guy would say he's guarding heaven (because he's guarding hell but would lie)

I get what Karl meant by 'How would I know which one I was?'. It wasn't quite as stupid as he made it sound, I know what he meant, he just worded it badly. Ricky and Steve thought he meant 'How would I know who I am?' when he actually meant 'How do I prove I'm the original if we're the exact same?' If you have the same memories and neither Karl or Suzanne (or anyone else) couldn't tell which was the original Karl, then is the 'real' Karl actually the real one? It was a reasonable philosophical question, but his smooth brain made it sound like he didn't know who he was. And Ewan McGregor is pronounced You-wun. It's a Scottish name so there was little chance of you knowing that haha

Super-enjoyed this one! Your expressions throughout are a delight. Yeah a doppelgänger is like if you walked down a street and saw someone that looked identical to you but you weren't related. A clone is just a biological copy of you that would presumably be 'grown' in a laboratory. Steve's stories are great. He does a few. If you want the full story, it's on the audio version of The Ricky Gervais Show S2E2 at 8m30s in. Of course, you have access to those now. 😉 When Karl said "How would I know which one I was", I thought that was a clever question. Karl had asked if his doppelgänger had the same thoughts and memories as him, to which Ricky said yes. So Karl then wondered (given that you wouldn't likely know how long the other Karl had been around for or whatever), that he could begin to question whether he was the copy or the original. Because if both had met up and didn't know where or when the other came from, how would either of them know? Hope that makes some kinda sense. :) Finally... I totally agree with you about that modern art crap. It's like wine tasting. People pretending to know about things that they really don't. And I've seen your speed drawing vids. It totally blew me away. You are incredibly talented, and that's understating it. The one you did of Alien was incredible and I need to watch more. You should do illustrations for the movie industry (Marvel or DC superhero stuff). Send in some work. So many ideas :) If I had half of your drawing talent, I'd be putting myself out there. I've always wanted to be able to draw but I'm useless at it.

I watched a programme and a man was murdered in his house somehow. The police arrived to investigate and the victims wife cooked them a delicious lamb dinner. Anyway, they couldn't find a murder weapon so they went back to the police station without solving the murder. It turns out, the wife had killed the husband by whacking him on the head with the leg of lamb. The police had eaten the evidence! That's a sub-genre. I like that one too.
