Have you ever seen plants covered or wrapped in plastic? Certainly often, right? It may seem strange at first to see plants covered. Worried that it will also have a bad effect on plant growth. However, it turns out that covering plants is actually beneficial for the plants.
The hood concept itself is like what happens in greenhouses. What is usually used to cover plants is clear plastic. Apart from clear plastic, you can also use containers such as clear jars or containers. So the plants can be put directly into it and then closed using the lid of the container
Is it important to cover plants?
If asked whether it is important or not, in my opinion the act of covering is important for the survival of plants, because covering plants is an effort to increase the growth capacity of plants. This effort is usually carried out in plant propagation, to stimulate the growth of plant roots, stems and leaves. By covering plants, growth can increase because evaporation in plants is low, heat is evenly distributed in the cover, and air humidity remains high.
The plastic cover technique is also used for planting using grafting or shoot grafting techniques. This is intended to protect injured plants or exposed cells from pathogens that cause plant disease as long as the area inside the hood is sterile. The type of plastic hood that is commonly used is polyethylene plastic or better known as "ice plastic".
Providing a cover can also increase the humidity around the cuttings so that the transpiration rate is low and reduce the intensity of sunlight so that the auxin hormone is more active to support the formation of roots and branches and increase the length of the stem segments which affects plant height.
Covering provides ideal conditions for cuttings to grow so that they have a higher chance of survival, which is the purpose of covering.
The thing that needs to be paid attention to when covering plants is when the humidity in the lid is very high, this is indicated by a lot of dew sticking to the plastic walls. If we leave it, the dew drops that fall and wet the leaves or stems will not immediately disappear and cause fungus which causes the plants that we cover are rotting, to overcome this we need to monitor the condition of the hood and if necessary, we open it a little so that the humidity level decreases, then we close it again.
When we have finished covering, we cannot immediately open all the lids, because the plants will be stressed or even die because the plants are not ready for the conditions outside the lid, so when opening the hood it is necessary to adapt to the external environment, the way to do this is by opening it little by little. This means that plants can adapt slowly,
