kaykay Jones Yes, I’m a lot younger (22) but growing up as a young child the radio was our outlet but there were no smartphones. We were already hoping that what we were singing was not innuendo or euphemism and our parent(s) heard! This being said, mondegreens (mishearing of a certain word and/or phrase) were our specialities!

"Atmospheric" has long been a term used to describe this sound. Yes, it's rock. I was ten in 1977 when this came out ... almost eleven. The double lyrics at the end is just like a "round". It's fucking amazing and one of the most recognizable parts of the song. Now go listen to the original.

I'm still busy pushing Jane's Addiction to anyone who'll listen. Bill Burr said Ritual was a better album than Nevermind. I'm not saying Janes is in my Top 5 (The Allman Bros...) but they belong on every hard rocker's playlist!

twm twm Nirvana deserves the hype. I remember when they changed the whole rock music landscape for the better and I always turn up the volume for them. In comparison Jane's is underrated. Almost no airplay besides Been Caught Stealing and Jane Says. Perry Farrell did break new musical ground and also rebooted the rock festivals with Lollapalooza. Musically I think they're on par. Lyrically I give the edge to Jane's. Probably it's just that I'm not punk enough to get Nirvana.

no doubt Jane's Addiction is under rated nothing's shocking still relevant and killer today .... selfishly wished Nirvana was under rated.. maybe Kurt would be around kickin something... Nirvana bursting the corporate music scene ultimately kinda ended the genre and community that was alternative music ... as RRT comments he was surprised that Metal heads mosh against each other and they weren't a competing violent force but sharing the scene of alienated togetherness this was how it was in the day..

Rock music is the overall term for anything that is descended from rock and roll, which is what guys like Chuck Berry and Elvis Presley played in the early '50s, which was a blend of jazz, rhythm and blues and country. From the 50s to now you had progression of all kinds of styles... rock and roll, rockabilly, doowop, British invasion, psychedelic, surf rock, folk rock, garage rock, soft and hard rock, progressive rock, funk, heavy metal, punk, new wave, alternative, grunge, hardcore, nu metal. It's all some branch of rock music history.

I think the inspiration for the way the lyrics was written was Bob Dylan. Dylan's writing style was kind of stream of conscious, in other words, lyrics that didn't have to rhyme, but as a song flowed well.

He is talking in 70's jive like slang during the Disco and early classic rock time period right before the Bee Gees blew up. Duece 2 door hot rod/ reved up the engine. This song is in Billboards top 200 of the seventies singles sales charts for that decade but this group was kind of a one hit wonder alot of seventies bands were one hit wonders. This song has been in over 100 movies hundreds of TV ads globally it is one of the most commercially successful tunes of all time.

One of the best guitar solos of any rock song to come out of that era. Building a solo from a whisper, to a murmer, to a moan, to a fever pitched scream is a lost art. You seldom hear it done that way anymore, but if done right it hits you in the "feels" like nothing else can. Yeah... I'm a guitar player... so maybe a bit biased, but I love that kind of thing. Gives me goose bumps.

Rock is the parent category and all the others are sub categories. Heavy metal, hard rock, rock and roll and so on are all types of rock. Although rock and roll came out 1st. As it was the rock that was made in the 1950's, I think it is currently called rock-a-billy.

It was and still is a fun song to listen to. A style that was way ahead of it's time. And around nine minutes in, you were right. Some music is just music. But some songs when they play, take you back to an earlier time and refresh memories that are sometimes misplaced. It's a song that you don't really want to like, but it cannot be helped. Nice pick for the day. And as for what the words mean, you would have to ask the mumbler Bruce Springsteen.

Now this is more like it. I love all the music from this time period the most (mid 70's) because that was my formative years. I've heard this song a million times but I still dont know what the fuck it's about. The words don't make any damn sense, but I still like the song. I wish you would do comparison videos of these remakes and compare it to the original song. Yes, this is a remake of a Bruce Springsteen song (which in my opinion sucks donkey balls). A fun comparison of songs would be the Beatles "Come Together" and then the Aerosmith remake of it. Another is the Beatles "Helter Skelter" and the Motley Crue remake. Anyway, thanks for posting this. You know I live for WTF Wednesdays! lol (Wednesday is one of my days off so it's nice to pop open a beer early in the morning and see what you have for me this day). Things have only gotten worse as corporate takeovers consolidated the independent stations unto 3 or 4 corporations. Now just about every genre plays the same damn songs on a loop for eternity all across the US. Radio stopped playing deep cuts or lesser known artists that the really good DJ's used to find. Corporatism has completely killed radio for me. Satellite radio is only marginally better. There's still so many great deserving artists that never get heard because of that homogeneous corporate mindset.

I think you should sample this homie. I haven't heard anybody do it and you could chop it up pretty good it think. Also, I always liked that chopsticks part.

Yeah, if you saw the movie "Blow" it's in the soundtrack. Hell ... it IS the soundtrack of the '70s. This song positively reeks of the 70s. Bruce Springsteen said somewhere that he wanted to write like Bob Dylan .. and these lyrics seem like his attempt at that.

It sure does sound like he's saying douche. But deuce is a car reference. I don't remember exactly what the reference is, though.

Likely the same car the Beach Boys were referencing. :)

It does sound like he has a speech impediment on that word duece. He says DOUCHE. 😂😂 Yeah, he's just playing with words. This was like Pop rock, or almost top 40s rock back in the day if I had to pigeon hole it. That moment was a guitar solo with some very well done effects including a wah wah pedal, maybe a flanger, and delay.
