I see someone else has already mentioned this, but because this happens a lot and comments always have to correct it, even though no-one seems to be taking any notice, I will reinforce this point yet again. Translators take note: Sister-in-law is the wife of a brother. Step-sister is the existing daughter of a parent's new partner. Unlike Japanese, we don't use the same description for both in English.

I'm a Canadian, and I've never heard anyone in real life call anything 'rubbers'. Rubber is always used to describe the material of the object. Rubber band, rubber gasket, rubber mallet, rubber ducky... not recalling anything else referred to as being rubber, but I'm sure there are more. Still, there is always a description of the actual item requested... so just saying 'rubbers' would lead to asking what they mean, and then lead into asking why they would cut out saying what they wanted. There would never be a misunderstanding, unless one person insists on calling something 'rubbers' and the other decides to poke fun by getting something else that is rubber. If someone asked me to 'pick up rubbers', I would totally go buy a pack of rubber duckies or a couple rubber mallets... then act innocent when they get upset. In my area, for this mistake to happen... one has to be talking about using gloves, wearing an apron, doning a hazmat suit... or some other 'protection'. Then, someone could request protection or say they are gonna get some protection. Then, I could see this sort of misunderstanding happening.

For clarification, mind explaining why step-sister is so upsetting? Is it because it's a trope that gets a little over-used? Or 'sister' makes it impossible to consider that they are not blood related? For example, I dislike when they are blood related... because I have cousins with problems due to in-bread-ing (intentional, for YT bots). My troubled cousins came from cousins making trouble. So I don't like stories about dating a blood-related sibling, cousin, niece/nephew, aunt/uncle... because I just have to visit family to see the risks. I'm even hesitant about second-cousins (or other such second-degree blood relations), but studies have deemed it not an issue. So, I'm just wondering what about 'step-sister' upsets you.
