No good deed goes unpunished. Those were some damn good soldiers. It takes a lot to do the right thing when you know you might not make it out alive for doing so. This is maybe the first time in an anime or manga where I actually feel something for the background guys. Just two dudes recognizing that something was wrong and doing their best to make it right. It's good to know that their good deed wasn't buried in the rubble and lost.
