How long does it last if we use beeswax or tapioca starch? Which one lasts the longest? Does it ripped easily? I'm interested on making this for my final project but I don't know which ingredients is prefect to make the leather last long and not mouldy 😅 love your vids btw

Awesome straightforward video, how does it hold up to moisture?

Hiii!! Im sorry for this veeery late reply, however is maybe better to answer this after all this time because I could see how my samples evolved! :) I believe it really depends on how is the temperature and humidity on where you store it, this simple recipe is quite heat and water sensitive. So during warm summer days, I could see that it got moist and sticky, no mold tho, but as winter came it wen back to it's dry form. Now, almost after a year in making them, the flexibility aspect is starting to fade, if I fold the material I can see some cracks. Well hope this helps, and please get in touch if you need more info!

If I halved the measurements of food used, could I heat and cool the leather for half the amount of time? Also did you keep it in the oven for 14 hours? Btw this video is super helpful and such a great way to explore creating faux leather!

The drying time depends more on the thickness and the ventilation power of your oven. Because I did mine on regular oven, it took quite long, but I would just leave it there overnight. If you have access to a dehydrator oven it should be much faster! Another option, in case you live in a very warm weather, is simply putting it to dry outside on a dry, sunny day! Thanks for the comment and curious to know if it works out well!

The beeswax helps getting some water resistant but not a lot. You can try applying the wax (it can be mixed with some sort of vegetable oil) after the material is dry as well. And I didn’t try myself to stitch it but I have seen some wallets and bags made out of it, so it should be possible!!

Hey, what's the purpose of adding lemon juice to the puree? I get that cinnamon is to help prevent mold, and beeswax gives it some water-repellant properties, but I'm stumped about importance of adding lemon.

I believe it helps mango pulp to release pectin and thickens the mixture naturally.

In theory all sort of fiber + cellulose when dehydrated can have the potential to become such material. It really depends on the concentration of each, other fruits like banana, berries, pear, kiwi, can also work well. Sometimes you will have to add some starch (like maizena or tapioca) and glycerine, to reach the right properties. The basis of the process is the same, so you can go wild on experimenting!! :)

is turning the oven on for 14 hours safe?? Wont it overheat and explode?? Im asking for my project i would appreciate an answer
@ephemeralfashionlab4563
@ephemeralfashionlab4563 Жыл бұрын
I would leave on 40 degrees, the lowest temperature possible, with the fan on. You can also leave the door a bit open, I don't thinks there is a chance of overheat or explosion at such temperature. Ideally you should use a dehydrator oven for this ;)

@ephemeral fashion lab thank you so much for replying! Since 40 degree would be the lowest temp possible, is it possible to just sun-dry it?? I live in a tropical country where the climate reaches around 40°C
