Sir, I am in favor of growing mangoes from pits though they may or may not be true to type so grafting is commonly preferred and practised world over. Here I may refer to your old video regarding Tipping and Tipping the terminal or lateral shoots or even bigger limbs to convert the tree into a bush. I can't say if the bushy smaller trees may produce more fruits of quality. But my point is whether we can turn the pits grown plants into early bearing as they tend to be growing faster than the grafted ones whatever may be variety (ies) vigorous or otherwise. Shall feel grateful if you focus light on this issue. I am very impressed from your 13 years old video having most important and valuable information please. Thanks. Welcome and regards from India State of Himachal Pradesh's Subtropical Kangra Distt. please. Hats off to your work in Horticulture especially mango. 👌👍❤️🙏🙏

What do you do if you have a tree that was planted and let to grow for a few yrs without pruning? It definitely needs help, but idk where to start. It can't even hold it's own weight. Not sure where to prune.

Hi Richard, all of your videos are very helpful. Now I recently planted a grafted mango tree in the ground and it's about 19" tall. Should I wait till the tree is a little bigger before I go ahead and tip it? Also, what do you think about removing the lower leafs to encourage more growth? Thank you for your time!

I accidentally let a couple month old mango tree sit in my car to long before transplanting and the new small baby leave on top dried out and fell off should I just let it be ? Or cut the top. It still has about 6 big leaves on it that are healthy. Tree is growing in South Florida. Thank you : : : The ANSWER is I cut the top off 3 or 4 weeks ago just like in the video new growth has began growing half inch below the cut. New sprouts of leaves are shooting out way better than the four leaves to began with. The very young five or six month old tree looks great now , Good video Thank you

Such a dense bush may be good in drier, low anthracnose areas.... but in wetter areas, in my experience you want more light and airflow to get in there. May take a bit longer to fruit that your method, but less fungal issues.

Very informative, and counter-intuitive for someone like me who has never grown fruit trees before. I have a Keitt and Kent sapling en route from Florida to my home in Los Angeles right now. If I want a slightly larger tree/bush, can I just tip at a later/longer length? e.g. if I let the flushes grow to ~15" instead of 10", will I get a tree of similar shape that's just 50% taller/wider than the one in your video? Or is there something special about the 10" length that's optimal for encouraging fruiting?

My Mallika and Nam Doc Mai have flushed numerous new leaves in the last 2 weeks and they are beautiful. I have been tipping sporadically and believe that had something to do with it, but I want to be more aggressive about it to see if they fluff out more, since the Mallika is about 4 years old and has yet to give me fruit. Is it safe to tip the new flushes? Also, how often should I tip. Neither tree has yet fruited and they are both about 4 to 5 feet tall.

Thank you for sharing, your videos are very informative. I just wish I had seen the video earlier. My mango trees are about 2-2 1/2 years old. I have not done any pruning until this past Sept, cutting off the upright vigorous branches, and tipped the branches with the blossom spikes, so I did not do a thorough tipping as you've shown here. Would you recommend that I go back and tip the trees now, or are they too old? Only about 5 trees bore fruit, the others have not.

Hi, i have a tree, grown from shop bought seed, monoembryonic, perhaps from Brazil, about 4,5 years old, the trunk is about 3-4 cm wide, sizewise the tree is 1/3 of a regular tree in Florida i guess. I live in middle of Europe, it gets some humidity in the greenhouse, but not much. I started to grow it in the summer in a greenhouse. It grew from July till September 2 sections. During the winter 2 really small parts, then from May in the greenhouse every year about 3 sections. I like your pruning methods, till end of the summer it will have 10-15 branches not really thick, to tip prune. My climate is not ideal i know even with greenhouse, can i hope for any fruiting? I ordered cheap seeds from China. Is it true that some Asian varieties grow better in less humid regions? I tried lots of shop bought seeds from Brazil, and i put them outside right after germination in June in the full sun, and they did not grow, lack of humidity?? or too strong sun, or hot temperature. I put some seeds a plastic cover arrroud them, that helped growth, but as i removed it , growth slowed down. My experience is to start them inside in February, and they will have time to get bigger till end of summer. I have now two plants germinated in February, and they are about 50cm tall, still inside. Usually the seeds are just 30cm big till end of the summer, when i start them in June outside. Inside they grow really fast, it took 10-12 days to form the 3. section compeletly. I have a Kensington 1,5 years old, and a Gomera-3 at that age too, bought from South-Italy. According to some sources Gomera is a really hardy variety, with lots of small fibrous fruits. As i said, i live in middle Europe so 4 seasons i have. All my plants are in containers, i put them inside for winter. I fertilize them with balanced NPK. In your other video you mentioned to use more potassium when fruits are coming, but still not the case for me:) Does cutting degree has an impact on the direction of the branches growing, or just have to pay attention where the leaf stems are. Could you name me tasty varieties, for a less humid reagon like mine to try? Thank you Adam

Hi Adam, Thank you so much for your comment! We apologize for the late response, we had to reach out to our Curator of Tropical Fruit (and Fairchild Mango expert), Dr. Noris Ledesma. Below are her answers. Q1: Can I hope for my mango tree to fruit? A: Yes, it might still fruit. However, it might be better to try a dwarf cultivar such as 'Angie', 'Pickering', 'Manilita' or 'Fairchild'. Q2: Do Asian varieties grow better in less humid regions? A: Well mangos are subtropical and tropical. So it depends how humid! Q3: Does cutting degree has an impact on thedirection of the branches growing, or just have to pay attention where the leaf stems are.A: Training a tree requires a lot of different steps! Here’s a study we did on training and pruning our mango trees that might be helpful: www.fairchildgarden.org/Portals/0/Mango%20and%20fruit%20growing%20pdf%20articles/2017-Training%20and%20Pruning%20a%20Mango%20Orchard.pdf?ver=2018-06-11-122542-230&timestamp=1528734431149 Q4: Could you name me tasty varieties, for a less humid region like mine to try? Camera needs to be closer, its hard to see what he is doing, its nice to see the sky in the background, but we all have sky. do you mean you are tipping ALL the ends of ALL the branches?? at what length of the branch to cut off, how often?
@fairchildgarden
@fairchildgarden 6 жыл бұрын
Hello! Sorry for the late response. We recommend tipping pretty aggressively to shape your tree. Proper early pruning will provide balance for the rest of your tree's life! Trees should be tipped every 20 inches. For more tips, here's a Miami Herald article Dr. Noris Ledesma wrote. www.miamiherald.com/living/home-garden/article1973880.html as well as a published article: www.fairchildgarden.org/Portals/0/Mango%20and%20fruit%20growing%20pdf%20articles/2017-Training%20and%20Pruning%20a%20Mango%20Orchard.pdf?ver=2018-06-11-122542-230&timestamp=1528734431149

This is not just fruit production. If you're planting these in Florida then you do not want a tall tree that will get knocked down by a hurricane.

I have really enjoyed watching your videos. They are well made. I am in the Tampa Bay Rare Fruit Council. I am working on a Mango list to help new people to mango's make good choices. Would you be willing to look at it and help make it a little better based on your experience? I can email it to you.

STOP....I like the 'Bush'. But I want at least chest high branching. Why? The trees are in my grassy yard...not in an orchard. A tree with low hanging fruit turns into a big mess to mow the grass around them during the summer AND varmints are less likely to discover fruit if it's hanging higher. So if you're a home yard grower like me...get your mangos to hang higher off the ground! Make your life easier.

I have a question about mango grafting: What are the requirements to keep the scion healthy from the time it is cut from the desired tree until it is grafted on to the rootstock? For how long can the scion survive after being cut from the desired three until it is grafted on to the rootstock? Thanks.
