Hi! This is Chey, join me and my special guest as we compare two different types of mangos. Up first we have the Kent mango, maybe you've heard of it and seen it around in your local grocery store. Next, we have the Manila mango. Sleek and sweet, this green-flecked, yellow-skinned tropical fruit is rarely found in American grocery stores. Time for a face off! Let's have a taste test!

Manila mango is from Mexico. The mango from the Philippines is called carabao mango. The Philippines already protested before to the Mexican government about this issue. Here in Saudi some coconut water drink are labeled Manila and Laguna but they are produced from Thailand.

"Manila mangoes" from Mexico are ALSO descendants of carabao mangoes, originally from the Philippines. Introduced during the colonial era.

carabao mangoes are just one of the various variety of mangoes in the Philippines. The best mangoes like the ones from Guimaras are smaller than the carabao mangoes.

It is actually a common thing to name a fruit or plant variety based on it's origin or the place where it came from. A lot of countries and places in the world planted the Philippine mango seeds. In Miami for example, they're selling their produce in the market calling it Philippine mango but the fruits were grown in Miami. It can be misleading but that is how it is for fruits or any other plants. Like how we sometimes called a strawberry "Japanese strawberry" when it's a variety from Japan but were not actually grown in Japan.

The Manila mango you tried is not from the Philippines. It’s cultivated in Mexico now. They’re also called champagne mango in California. It’s smaller with a thicker peel and tastes different maybe because of the different soil in Mexico. They are sold at regular price in the US. The real Philippine carabao mango that’s imported from the Philippines is very expensive. It’s funny how preferred consistency and texture develops according to what you’re used to. In the Philippines, we almost trash the Kent mango (we call apple mango) because to us, it tastes like medicine (cough syrup) and it’s too hard. It’s like imitation mango. Not the real thing only because it greatly differs from what we love more. Mangoes to us should have the consistency of ripe peach. Juicy and soft. It’s a cultural thing.

That's not overripe that is how it is supposed to be. overripe mangoes are tends to be darker orange in color rather than yellowish.

The best are from Sinaloa. The climate makes for great Kent AND Manila Mangoes. Home grown is very best. Picked right off the tree. I wish I had more room but for my Manila to pick from Sept-Oct.

the manila mango (or what we call in the philippines as mango), thats how good mango taste and feels like. it has a jelly like texture and its very sweet. its only tangy if its not perfectly ripe. of all the mangoes around the world, only the philppine mango (as far as i know) hold that distinct texture.
