This is really helpful to me, I have the roasted stout currently at 1020 and was about to add the dry hops (galena). I used dark malt extract instead of dextrose. I think it’s bitter enough already and I don’t think I will add the dry hops, I am a little over loud hop beers (hazy IPA poisoning I think) and am looking for more malt.

Nice review ! I started this today before seeing your review, I stuck pretty much to the instructions, but rather than using the 1.2 kilo pouch addition I used a 1.5 pouch. Hopefully that will give slightly more mouthfeel.

How did it go with the larger liquid malt pouch as I was considering the same and adding a few more hops
@davec49554 жыл бұрын
@@craighunter3273 I was very happy with the result and to be honest I didn't think it needed more hops. I fermented out at 20 degrees c and at about 7psi in a fermzilla.

Cheers mate yeah i still have some of that need to revisit and review but think my is a little over carbed.

I think the thin mouthfeel probably is because the malt extract is made so that it gives you as much fermentable sugar as possible and not with stouts in mind.
@beerloverTV5 жыл бұрын
I think you have hit the nail on the head some kits work well but feel a stout is very hard this way.Which is odd to me a grain bill is very simple for these.
@rimmersbryggeri5 жыл бұрын
@@beerloverTV I think it's about the tepratures they, mash at when they make the extract. For a dry and bland stout like guiness it might work especially if you pour it with guiness gas. For anything else you need to be able to control the mashing temps to get anything close to what you want. Even that can prove difficult becasue the malts we have access too might be over modified allready and biased towards the dryer leaner styles. It's an art and a science of its own to get the final product that you were looking for even with state of the art equipment and near total control.

They also have a version called "the working man's stout", which comes with a different yeast and no extra hops (other than what's already in the extract). Have you heard about/tried it?
@beerloverTV5 жыл бұрын
Hey thanks for this .I have to say i have not seen that .Could that be available only in NZ ?
@vbence125 жыл бұрын
@@beerloverTV Don't think so. I live in the eu and that's where I came across it. Here is the link to the Mangrove Jack website if you are interested: mangrovejacks.com/collections/traditional-series/products/traditional-series-export-stout Also, if you look at their website they have a version of the kit you made without any dey hops! Could that be any better?
@vbence125 жыл бұрын
@@beerloverTV I haven't tried it yet, but I want to get into home brewing but I'm unsure. I would love to do a stout but since I want to start with a kit/extract that's not an option(could this kit be improved by not adding all of the included dry hops?). I'm stuck between the grapefruit IPA (not huge IPA/hop fan but I had a few fruity IPA that I liked) and the Belgian sour ale.

We can get nitro mix but its the size thats a killer for me with space and you cant get it in a threaded bulb for most chargers.

Great to see you back on the Tube again, mate. I spent my first few years of brewing making Coopers Stout kits - nothing spectacular but very predictable and reliable nevertheless. BIAB stout is in another league altogether though and you take back control of the results. Happy brewing.

I've just brewed my first (gloop) Stout kit and I have the same issue with the Stout feel and flavour. I've found the malt flavour lacking in every kit I've brewed but it really shows in the stout. Only been brewing for 6 months but I think it's time to go all grain now that I've got the hang of the fermentation through kits. Does anyone in these comments have a recomendation on (cheap) equipement to get going on all grain?
@beerloverTV5 жыл бұрын
I think a pot big enough for your stove top and a good grain bag and do biab to start.Will be less equipment and give you scope to use that pot as a hlt later on. You could get a 25ltr container and do no chill avioiding the cost of a chiller and saving some time aswell.
@AnalogueInTheUK5 жыл бұрын
I went BIAB and no chill a few years ago. £120 for a Buffalo gl349 and £20 for a decent bag. The difference in quality when compared with kits varies from good to staggering and it really helps you to understand how beer is made. Stouts/Porters are a piece of piss with BIAB and will beat many commercial offerings.

Hard to get a coopers now.Wilko used to be great for it.I just think stouts in kit for are a no go pale and hoppy beers are ok.Wheat beer is possibly the best in a kit for taste i feel.

yeah i agree stout from a kit is usually not really stouty enuff, imo hoppy pale ales work well from kits drunk fresh, cheers!
