actually, that's not a problem. the problem is.. even tho they failed, they keep making the same game over and over. -_- if your game's sales bad, CHANGE THE GAME MECHANICS OR STORY and CARE MORE ABOUT THE MARKETING, DAMMIT!!! They finally realized this in 2012 when they released awakening. and then fates. and now three houses. now FE became more new n better than the previous version since awakening. They're too late to realize.... But it's better late than never. Now 3 houses have 3 kingdoms. and have that teacher-student thingy. which is new to FE series.

I noticed an inconsistency in your video. You said that FE8's lower sales is probably caused by its lower difficulty alienating Japanese fans. But according to the numbers you posted, it sold 300,000 copies in Japan, actually slightly up from 290,000 for FE7. It's actually in North America and Europe where FE8's sales are slightly lower compared to FE7.
@iridium1378 жыл бұрын
+iridium137 I just noticed another inconsistency. You said FE9's total sales are at 540000, but if you add up the sales from each region, 290000+300000+80000+1000 totals to 670000, which is a lot higher than 540000.

Hey Manga I just wanted to add some clarification on the decision to localize FE7. I'm sort of surprised Gaiden sold about as much as FE1. Between the release of those two games, the SNES debuted, so it's weird that there would still be a market for an NES game. I wouldn't say it was FE8's low difficulty that caused a decline in sales, but it was its sameness. There aren't many differences between FE6, FE7, and FE8, so it's natural that the Japanese audience would be fatigued. I attribute FE9's sales failure to poor marketing, and the fact the GameCube wasn't a very successful console. 2005 was the twilight of the GameCube's days. Cool video!

@DavidHutchinson07133 жыл бұрын
@@MrMarinus18 Plus, Path of Radiance was released near the end of the GameCube's life cycle, and with the Wii on the horizon, I imagine some would-be buyers turned away due to the upcoming console factor. As for Radiant Dawn, PoR's disappointing sales resulted in Nintendo both short stocking the game AND releasing it very close to the release date of Super Mario Galaxy, which became one of the Wii's premiere killer app games. The fact that the Tellius games can get a bit too ambitious for its own good (at least IMO) doesn't help either.

Plus, we didn't let the 12th game release in the west? Well, it's YOUR fault, so you're going to make your next game on our brand new console and we're gonna give you lots of marketing, beacuse it can be your last game". I mean, I don't know for sure, but seems to me that Nintendo tells Int Sys where to make a game and they are marketing it. Dunno, maybe I'm wrong, but seems like another corporate (i. e. dick) move to me. Of course you're not going to give this series popularity, if you don't make moves to.

Admittedly, it has taken me a while to get used to the concept of "perma-death" for characters in the franchise. Despite that I have played through Path of Radiance, I usually would restart entire chapters just so I can have all characters live by the end of the game. Then Awakening had a "casual" mode, where I didn't have to worry about restarting chapters if someone died... though I got back into it again, and decided to try normal; and if someone dies, just keep going. It ended up giving me more appreciation for this series. It's like D&D, where if your character ends up dying, they're gone for good, and the player would have to make a new character if they wish to continue in the campaign. In Fire Emblem, there are just a lot of characters that I just would never use, and they just sit in the barracks until the end of the war. It forces me to use the other characters I wouldn't have used otherwise if someone were to die. It also allows me to more carefully strategize a plan, and pray luck is on my side that the enemy doesn't crit.
@MrMarinus183 жыл бұрын

I would love to see an update video on this topic, considering all of the changes that Fire Emblem Echoes and Three Houses brought to the table, like the fully featured voice acting, inclusion of an "undo turn" command, and the insane marketing push that Nintendo made with Three Houses (not to mention all of the new Fire Emblem characters in Smash). It's weird how the series has been affected by Smash Bros, from Marty/Roy in Melee introducing the world to the franchise, to having an entire 3 characters added from Awakening to Smash 4 (which is where I really got into the series), and now having a total of 8 characters, and in the top 3 of most characters from a single franchise (I think only Pokemon and Mario have more characters) EDIT: Oh, and I guess you can mention Heroes and Warriors and Tokyo Mirage Sessions. Wow, Fire Emblem has a lot of spinoffs all of a sudden, doesn't it? Lol...

I believe the low sales of Shadow Dragon was far from the only reason we didn't get FE12- the game really was too late in the DS's life. By the time it had been localised the 3DS would have been out for a while. I wonder how much the Ambassador games for 3DS influenced Awakening's sales. They were my introduction to the series, and the reason FE 8 is my favourite even though I don't think it's the best

@BigKlingy5 жыл бұрын
You didn't mention one aspect of Thracia 776 that probably contributed to the low sales: not only was it released on the SNES when the N64 was in full swing, but its first release was only available via the Nintendo Power service... no, not the US magazine, in Japan it was sort of like an "official flashcart" that you'd go to specific outlets and get games downloaded onto. It only saw an actual cartridge release a year later, I think. This very awkward distribution method was probably a big factor in its low sales.
@RWBn00b8 жыл бұрын
I've heard it was actually the bad sales of the Tellius games that put the series on it's death bed. Both games were big investments that flopped. FE11 and FE12 were more along the lines of life support, with games made for way less money using the already established, popular Akaneia story and in the case of FE12, a very late release on the DS preventing a localization from being out any time soon(and possibly costing more than it gained due to the 3DS arrival). IS probably didn't really expect much more of a return on FE12 than they got.

As of March, Fates sold 1.8 million physical copies. Holy hell. I have absolutely no doubt that when the European date hits, this game will fly passed Awakening's sales.

Ugh, if only Leaf had been added in SSB instead of Roy as Nintendo originally planned, then we may actually have some progress on a Jugdral localization...
@SacodePatatasXD8 жыл бұрын
+ModelOmega We don't have a FE6 localization, however. EDIT: Wait, did you mean a translation patch?

So if these games were already selling over 250k copies, why do people continually say Awakening saved the franchise when it only would've died if Awakening sold less than New Mystery?
@Mangs1337 Жыл бұрын
Because the developers were literally told that if Awakening didn't sell above a certain amount, they would terminate the franchise.

Very Informative and interesting, Great video as always Mangs. Whats with the good games with crappy sales? It's kinda frustrating for me.

It's really a shame. Radiant Dawn was the game that got me into Fire Emblem, and is to date in my top ten favorite games of all time. Awakening and Fates are cool, but they pale in comparison to the Tellius series.

The reason for fire emblem being brought to the west was because of the popularity of games like advance wars, and less because of Marty and Roy on ssbm

This video was really cool! :3 You did an awesome job, and it was nice to see how they failed miserably and then how they raised to fame thanks to fire emblem Awakening. I personally do prefer some of the older ones to the new ones, as in mechanics and gameplay and writing and characters, but the new games are beautiful, and they have memorable and lovable characters c: The thing is that it kind of looks like these two last games are a strategy game mixed with a visual novel, but that's fine cx I'm just really glad sales are going well ^^

I'm a little confused about the conclusion you drew when looking at the numbers of copies sold of FE11 and FE12. Both games actually sold 270 000 copies in Japan, so it really didn't sell less (in Japan). There's no decline to be seen here, if you ask me. It's just that FE11 was also brought to the west, while FE12 was not.
@screwtokaiba8 жыл бұрын
+Infernofire To add to this, FE11 actually got hurt in sales due to how hilariously wide spread the piracy on Nintendo DS was. FE12 has never been considered for Western release for this exact reason. All in all though FE11 and FE12 is definitely a cash grab that tried to recover from the bombing of Tellius
@Rezkeshdadesh8 жыл бұрын
+screwtokaiba Ironically, the only way I and every other Western FE fan was able to play FE12 was by pirating it.

My entry point to the franchise was actually Shadow Dragon followed by New Mystery and I don't have any regrets whatsoever. Well, Shadow Dragon aside, FE12 at least definitely doesn't deserve so much hate, the characters & plot are kinda dumb, sure, but having played every single game in the series since FE6 I think It's one of the better games in terms of difficulty, unit positioning and overall map design. Not my absolute favourite but still pretty high up there.

It is kinda sad Path of Radiance sold like shit back in 2005. I first heard of Fire Emblem from Smash Bros but I wasn't interested in the series until a high school friend talked a lot about Fire Emblem Awakening. But my first FE game was Path of Radiance on Dolphin 5. (I know I'm very new to the FE series) I loved it and decided to try out other games. Specifically the GBA, DS games and Awakening. I am very glad Awakening sold well however controversial it may be. BTW Is it strange that I like Awakening almost about as much as the GBA and Tellius games?

I don't think I'll ever understand how Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn did so poorly, especially in Europe. Well the obvious answer would be a lack of advertising (I don't remember seing a single ad about it; I knew of it and bought it because I fell in love with Fire Emblem on GBA) but damn were they enjoyable to play. And while in terms of sales, Awakening and Fates are two giants compared to the rest of the series... Well... the economic model is just shameful. Many DLCs and then a game divided in 3 bits to buy separately... *sigh* I am rather reluctant in calling it a golden age. It has some "selling your soul to the Devil" undertone to it. According to this : www.vgchartz.com/game/85716/fire-emblem-fates/ the games sold for 1.68 million copies, so not as big a success as Awakening, especially since it went over 2 million, but a very good success nonetheless. So it seems there should be no worries as to a future episode of the series ! I simply hope they grow back some sense and some of its original spirit into it.

you should have compared japan only games' sales with the japanese sales figures of games... one mil in JAPAN is pretty huge, and FE3 got almost 800 thousand.
