If your polearm is so bad it snaps from an axe hit while you are holding it BEFORE you could stab the guy with the inferior range... what are you even doing in a fight with that terrible polearm? X,D Axes beat "lances" in FE for the sake of having a rock-paper-scissors system. Just take this stuff with a grain of salt. Look at the Pokemon games for example.... the elemental advantages are just plain ridiculous in that game. X,D

I miss the Trinity of Magic. I really enjoyed seeing magic basically behave like the physical weapons. Light had similar properties to Swords, being the weakest but most accurate; Anima was similar to Lances, being the most common and balanced; and Dark was similar to Axes, slow and inaccurate, but hard-hitting.

***** Maybe it's just me, but I think unlike the weapon triangle, the trinity of magic really didn't matter much. There was little reason to do mage vs. mage of similar levels because normally a physical unit could ORKO them and because of mage's high res, they wouldn't be able to do much to each other. If the mage even could do significant damage to another, that typically means there is a huge level difference between the two units.

SageOfAnys I see your point, though I just generally feel more comfortable sending units with high resistance to go fight mages and such. Yeah, my physical units generally don't have issues ORKO-ing magic users, though the less I have to heal the better. I mean, no one that isn't using an lance or Swordreaver will even TOUCH my Swordmasters, but I like using high damage, high hp, low defenses units like Fighters, and if I don't have to use them to take out magic users, I can send them out to take out armor units. And in the late game, my magic users are very proficient at taking out other magic users. ORKO is never an issue, and their resistance is too high to get even scratched

***** I would like to point out that the last part you mentioned is what I mean that the trinity doesn't matter. Endgame, you can just ignore it entirely unlike the weapon triangle, which is still a major mechanic, and I find that early game mages have terrible accuracy, so I'm not afraid to send a strong physical unit to kill it. Also I feel our different preferences affect our opinions here. I like heal spamming, especially early on to get easy EXP, and I can't stand using units like fighters for some reason... Even then the trinity isn't needed to have one magic be more accurate, one be average, and one be hard-hitting but inaccurate. I think Awakening was okay with that with the whole wind-is-accurate, thunder-is-powerful, and fire-is-average. The only bad thing I can think was that there was no reason to use fire. Ever.

SageOfAnys You have a point, this really does just come down to personal preference and semantics. And I just checked my Awakening file in the first time in ages, and it seems that Fire does have its uses. Its strongest tome, Valflame, grants a +5 Magic boost, while Thunder and Wind grant Skill and Speed bonuses respectively. Though if I recall, thunder magic has a higher crit rate....

i actually miss the PoR and RD magic triangle, and how each anima magic was of its own class and had respective Mages/Sages for it (EG: Ilyana was a Lightning mage, Tormod was a Fire mage, Soren was a Wind mage) it also had an interesting interaction with how you handled Beasts, Fliers and Dragons, Beasts (Beast Laguz, Cavalry) were weak to Fire, Fliers (Hawks, Ravens, Herons and Pegasi) were weak to Wind and Dragons (Dragon Laguz and Wyvern Knights) were weak to Lightning.

Yeah mages, and specifically Sorcerers, were incredibly overpowered in Awakening. But the solution wasn't stripping them of virtually all their usefulness and giving Dark Mages a single dark tome. A lot of the older games handled magic balance waaaaaaaay better. Even then, magic being more powerful than melee units at the very least makes sense from a logical standpoint. So if I have to choose between the two extremes, I'd take overpowered magic to underpowered magic any day.

I can't properly say anything having only played Awakening, Path of Radiance and Binding Blade, but I like the idea Shadow Dragon had, with weapon ranks improving the advantages of the Weapon Triangle. I do like that Magic has a weapon Triangle, little disappointed it didn't appear in Awakening

I think that was more to do with character rank and mag than a magic triangle. It was never mentioned, and I didn't notice any significant advantage to using certain spells above others.

The reason why Dark Magic was taken out of 9 was because they didn't want to "overwhelm" the player. Too bad too because Rhys would've been even more awesome lol. Lol I like the Hawke/Manfroy back and forth. XD I like FE4's version because its the highest risk/reward and it made Axe's actually good.

I personally think the magic trinity should have been reversed: Fire>thunder>wind>fire. Along with: dark>anima>light>dark, to make it such that we have the whole "light beats dark" concept, while not making light magic overpowered.

I think the magic trinity makes a lot of sense. Anima (nature, human forces) are beat by Dark (supernatural, evil beings. Or corrupting forces, alluding to how weak the human psyche is), and Anima beats Light (god, holy beings, as a sort of deus ex machine? xD)

in gba games, light magic is, sadly really weak, being heavier, less powerful and with less weapon uses in exchange for a low crit chance and a bit of extra accuracy, which is not needed since most magic tomes had good accuracy. they should have given LM more crit chance, like +30% to A range, or made it lighter than anima.

My favorite is actually the current triangle of Sword/Tomes > Axes/Bows > Lances/Shuriken (Throwing Daggers), and loops back around. Brings Tomes & Bows way back in line!

The weapon triangle *does* make sense if you take weapon lengths into account. Reaching further than your opponent is useful...unless you overextend yourself. Spears would, therefore, be most effective against weapons that are too long to be wielded in tight quarters but too short to outdo their length advantage, while weapons designed to be used in tight spaces (like, say, a small hand-axe) would be best for getting in close where a polearm can't be used effectively.

So this is a bit off topic but APPARENTLY fire emblen 14 has removed weapon durability and added a mode called phoenix mode where of a unit dies they are revived on the next turn. We now have Casual mode and SUPER casual mode. Kill me.

I think the reason axes beat lances is because you could use the flat part of the axe to block to lance, and you could just easily chop the lance in half. Lances beat swords because lances outrange them and would just rek. Swords beat axes because swords are quick and axes are slow.

I really like the radiant dawn sistem, puting the magic triangle as Anima ad making a new triangle with Anima, Light, Dark. For me it makes sense. For the weapon triangle 15% plus 1 dmg sounds the ideal for me.

A little off-topic from the Weapon Triangle, but Awakening also added additional bonuses to your attacks depending on your weapon rank, which differ depending on the weapon involved. Swords deal slightly more damage as they rise in rank: + 1 Attack at C, + 2 at B, and + 3 at A. Axes are more accurate as the weapons rise: + 5 Accuracy at C, + 10 at B, and + 15 at A. Staves heal a little more: + 1 Recovery at C, + 2 at B, and + 3 at A. The bonuses for Lances, Bows, and Magic are all the same kind, though. Add 1 Attack at C, 1 Attack and 5 Accuracy at B, and 2 Attack and 5 Accuracy at A. More on topic, though, even if all the magic is grouped under a single proficiency, I'd like to see magic have some kind of interaction among itself again, even if it's the Jugdral / Tellius magic trinity. AFAIK, Awakening magicians use Thunder magic in most situations, Wind magic to hit flying enemies (though not the basic Wind tome since basic Thunder would do the same damage), and Nosferatu to heal if they can cast Dark magic. I see no point to Fire magic in this game unless you don't have Thunder tomes (with the exceptions of Valflame and maybe Micaiah's Pyre).

The physics are like this: sword is lighter and faster than an axe, therefore it becomes hard for an axe user to catch up to the speed to a sword user Axe will destroy the lance because the weapon is easily breakable and heavier than the sword. plus, you have the whole lance being a pointy stick while an axe is primarily made for cutting wood And lance has longer range than a sword, without being too heavy, makinging it hard for swords user to close the gap so in short: sword outmaneuvers axe, axe breaks the lance and lance outreaches sword

But... the axe would break, not the lance.... Lances are a sturdier weapon. (Axes are just a bad weapon compared to both swords and lances. I'd accept it if all the axe wielders used a shield or dual wielded since then they could deflect with one hand and attack with the other.)

My explanation for the melee weapon triangle: lances have enough range to stop sword wielders from getting close enough to do significant harm, a heavy weapon like an axe can smash a long and thus unwieldy weapon like a lance, and a sword, being lighter than either and much smaller than a lance, does not hinder the wielder's ability to dodge a heavy and thus inaccurate weapon like an axe.

For example, axes and most lances are nearly pointless in FE4 because of their huge weight, so swords reined supreme, meaning the weapon triangle is basically ignored in favour of just sword spamming. A similar thing happens in FE6, axes just have shite accuracy, with most being around 50%. They're easier to use then FE4 but a weapon triangle advantage against a lance user is often bubkis because you're still going to struggle to hit regardless. Or how about FE9, where axe users suddenly become much more vital due to the sea of lances that surround the enemy phase? Stuff like that I feel could've been a part of this.

I liked the weapon triangles in sacred stones. A triangle for physical stuff and for magical stuff made it an simple game to learn the series from. I hated that they removed the trinity of magic in Awakening. I missed that extra level of depth, although it was nice to mix and match somethings.

Another cool thing about FE11/12/13's weapon triangle is that it also negated the weapon rank bonuses that you would receive. So at A rank, swords would lose an additional 3 power on top of the regular triangle bonuses when at a disadvantage. At A rank, lances would lose an additional 2 power and 5 accuracy, and axes an additional 15 accuracy.

The Weapon Triangle is in my blood! Every other game I play I apply it instinctively, even knowing that it doesn't make any sense at all. My favorite Magic "Triangle" is the Radiant Dawn one. The more the magic the better. I would always forget whether Dark or Light magic beat Anima. Edit: excellent video!

The sword reigns supreme on the battlefield irl, and pretty sure they just made the axe beat lances cause that would balance it and make axe's not completely useless (Although most axe units are useless anyway but not all, hector being the example of a god tier axe unit. I rarely use axe units as the sword and lance units usually do the trick even against their disadvantage.) However my theory when i first played was that if a lance is coming towards you, the axe's large blade could block it, and in some axes such as the battle axe, it could be hooked in if you dodge the attack. It would be harder to pull off against a mounted foe. Halberds don't necessarily count as technically they are also pikes, and easily could hook a foe off their horse.

one problom. irl most swords perform very poorly against plate mail. where thrusting weapons like spears or crushing weapons like maces and axes can more easily get through armor.

The logic behind the weapon triangle: Swords beat axes because of their more nimble, skillful users being able to swiftly parry and attack past the enemy's necessarily slow swings and wide arcs. Lances beat swords because they have longer reach, keeping the swordsman from getting close enough to attack. Axes beat lances because a lance is mostly just a long stick with a point on the end, and axes are tools for chopping wood. The axe man can just power through in spite of the reach advantage.

Mangs, you did forget to mention in Sacred Stones the Trinity of Magic was indeed updated. Fire, Thunder, and Wind now fell into the single category of Anima, where it was remained as is for the most part. the triangle now followed as: Anima beats Light, Light beats Dark, Dark beats Anima.

I imagine the weapon triangle as this. Sword beats axe because axe swings are slow compare to sword. Lance beats swords due to longer reach. Axe beats lance by blocking the lance's lunge with the entire blade of the axe, deflecting its direction away, then countering back. :P

Fire Emblem Fates introduced the color triangle: Red beats green, green beats blue, and blue beats red. This is carried over to Fire Emblem Heroes. Swords are in red, lances are in blue, and axes are in green. Inventory is divided into categories in this order: 1. Swords 2. Lances 3. Axes 4. Bows 5. Tomes 6. Staves 7. Stones 8. Items

TLDR: IRL history says that lances (and spears) beat everything that's melee range. And bows beat the lot. Alright, lance is longer than the sword and it's well known that a sword (and axe too!) is a bad matchup against lance or spear. Sword catching the axe actually comes down to who has the strength advantage here to disarm the opponent, if you're weaker you didn't catch their axe, they caught your sword. That said, swords tend to be better made than axes in general, since one is used by nobles and the other is used by scum. If you level the craftsmanship, swords are heavier since they use far more metal but easier to chain swings because of the balance. Depending on whether you consider lances to actually be spears (their depiction in the game is a spear), the sword is actually the heaviest weapon of the three. If they're actual lances (or pikes too, I guess) then the lance is certainly the heaviest by a ridiculous margin. The actual counter to long reach weapons such as the lance is a shield. An axe will not help you since the lance will break your axe before you can break it, and if we're actually talking spears, then you're not going to get a chance to parry when you're using an unwieldy top heavy slow swing weapon against a fast one like the spear. The only way to beat the lance or spear is to use a shield to deflect it then smash them with whatever weapon you have in the other hand, (it doesn't matter what it is). Or just shoot them with a bow from a distance. Bow actually beats everything IRL, it's just a pain to train someone up to a respectable standard compared (about 10+ years) to just giving thousands of men spears and a 3 month crash course in stabbing shit and not running away. Never would've thought that given how much archers absolutely suck in Fire Emblem, huh?
