Any information on the waste characterization? Which radionuclides? What is the level of radioactivity? Are there any demonstrated cancer clusters or other disease or illness occurrences? Or is this just an overreaction?
@damonabets37793 ай бұрын
It’s a good question unfortunately he didn’t have a geiger counter. So we don’t know. I think every media journalist who does this type of radio activity news journalism should have one.
@paulkurilecz42093 ай бұрын
@@damonabets3779 I dug around a little bit and got past all of the media reports to actually find something from the DOE about it. Most of the waste is considered low level. The plant was actually an ore processing plant. If I am correct in my understanding of the situation, the waste is likely the tailings from the ore processing. In its natural concentration, uranium is primarily the U-238 isotope which does not have near the activity of the U-235 isotope. The separation of the U-235 isotope occurred at places like Oak Ridge. It seems that there was previous remediation done to place clay caps over the low level waste pits. One thing that I find interesting is that there is no mention of the risk of a truck accident from the thousands of trucks traveling to the facility in Michigan.

Why is it OK to have radioactive waste buried? I live near Waste Lake Landfill in Bridgeton, Missouri. Then, there is an area near Lambert airport that has contaminated creeks. People that live off that creek and around the landfill have higher rates of cancer and other illnesses. There is a group that has been fighting for over 15 years for the government to actually do some thing!

@@F.o.s.t.e.r. probably because people are uneducated, also, after a while they do need to replace some of the barrels. Manhattan project was over 50+ years ago, containment methods have improved since then and there was a lot of waste with that project so they may just be doing it to improve future conditions. I'm not sure. Most likely people are being idiots and not doing their research and complaining about stuff they know nothing about
