+Eric Nick well you guys can keep dreaming because the development team of manhunt and manhunt 2 is split; some where fired and others where moved to other projects like grand theft auto. that and if they do make a third one it may not be as good as the first 2 or it may end up being the opposite but like i said all anyanhunt fan can do is wait and hope...puff

+Axecellhaxen L. like i said before, the development team that worked on manhunt 1 & 2 is split, some fired/laid off, the rest where either placed on different teams or moved on to a different studio. the main and probably biggest reasson there may not be a third or even a remake of manhunt is simpley because the game was all about violence and to be honest mortal kombat and the most recent doom already have the spot taken, doom more so due to being made before manhunt...puff

Especially when you used the headset. One of my distinct memories of the game was when my brother was playing. He was hiding in the shadows and, after a bad guy had momentarily stopped, he whispered "HEY" just loud enough to catch the enemy's attention. What followed was the bad guy turning around, completely surprised, and my brother turning his head into paste with a shotgun. Bad. Ass.

Just as an expansion to the points hit on this video; I'm a big fan of this game myself and I feel that there were points missing. The game is not meant to be so much "disgusting" or "repulsive", it's meant to place you in an atmospheric world where your roles as hunter and hunted are easily flipped, and where isolation is the greatest feeling you have. The main character, Cash, is always out numbered in every scene of the game, making you want to take your time, hide, and understand your enemies so that you can pick them off individually as that is the only way you can survive the game. The gritty, dark world and difference between the gangs were meant to display the worst of what human beings could become. Common thugs (The Hoods), white supremacists ( The Skinz), mercenaries and abandoned soldiers (Wardogs), Cultists and perverts (Innocentz), the mentally insane that are untreatable (The Smileys), corrupt cops, and the guns for hire (Cerberus) all are meant to signify the kinds of evil and dysfunction in society. Further, it's also meant to provoke feelings of guilt or fear from past experiences in the player. Some members of the innocentz are abusive, pedophillic fathers that speak as if they are talking to a child they're beating, and some of the Skinz will speak on purity of whites and the will of god. In-game dialogue like this is meant to hit somewhere deep in the players, ranging across many social upbringings and backgrounds. In short, this game is a damn-fine and intelligent piece of art. It does not receive enough credit because people are unwilling to delve into the world of Manhunt, they instead have tunnel vision on the graphic and violent mechanics that make the story necessary.

The strangest violent game I ever played was JFK: Reloaded. In it, you shoot JFK. That's about it, really. You get a rather in-depth ballistic analysis of how the bullet passed through JFK and other people, changing velocity as it penetrates internal body matter of different composition. You get the highest score for perfectly matching the actual entry and exit wounds JFK had, even the famous missed shot Oswald took. It was supposed to be a sort of art game meant to demonstrate to people that there didn't have to be a second shooter. It, uh, upset a lot of people.

I always thought it was just supposed to be an interactive historical reenactment. I've never understood what's so bad about experiencing such events firsthand, even if it is from the perspective of a murderer. It only serves to provide you with a deeper understanding of the event in question, though not very much deeper considering it ends as soon as JFK is dead.

Speaking of Pigsy, at the scene where Cash cuts his arms and makes him fall to his death, my game bugged out and rather than completing the impact animation when he came to the floor, he floated in mid-air for a good solid few seconds, flailing as if he was still falling, then the game crashed. It was both amusing and aggravating because I knew I had to do that whole boss fight all over again.

Actually when Manhunt came out, it was based on those "Urban Legend" about "Snuff videos" that was made for profit and sick entertainment back when Internet was still new for the mainstream public during the Internet Explorer period of early 2000.

Well in this day and age with 2 guys and 1 hammer, Beheading videos from Terrorist groups, the recent Facebook Rape live stream and other sick stuff. "Snuff videos" are no long "shocking" to hear about it. But back in the early days with slow Internet with no live stream. Filming someone actually being killed and tortured was almost "taboo" even though we know someone propably have done it but it won't be circulated for public.

Snuff films are real. They aren't "legends". There are people who desire those films and pay people for them. The only reason people have found some nowadays is because of the internet and sick fucks like the murderers behind "3 Guys, 1 Hammer" and other similar videos. Those guys actually testified that at the time they killed that man they had accepted a contract from someone who wanted them to make 10 or so snuff films. Make no mistake, they are real. I view it more as a critique of vigilantism and how we've come to fetishize it, i.e. why the Director tells James to kill specific people that we've come to hate because of what we associate with them. It's the same way how Irreversible uses its ultraviolence to effectively critique how utterly fucked up the core essentials of the rape-and-revenge and vigilante subgenres of action are. Compare that to Saints Row, where violence isn't exactly brutal (unless if it's supposed to be extremely specific to a cutscene) but, depending on the game and/or the moment within the game, can either be mere slapstick to make fun of the mountains of bodies in FPSes and sandbox games or give us insight into how utterly fucked this society is. The lengths Johnny Gat goes to avenge Aisha's death are meant to be disturbing, but also really funny - like gallows humor. Essentially, satire on how we've come to fetishize violence and take it as the default in sandbox games.

Martyrs was horrible to sit through, but i thought it was an amzaing film. Anyway, I think Marvel used violence in a simular way as well in Daredevil s2. --- --- When Karen Page and the Punisher are sitting in the diner, she's basically convinced that he's on the good side and agrees with his methods. However, the scenes that follow when the bad guys get there are basically there to show her (and us) how brutal and horrifying his form of vigilantism actually is.

Your brief synopsis contains an issue that caused an unfair negative response back in the day: Cash is told to kill people brutal ways BUT the part that's omitted is that the victims are violent gang members, psychopathic murderers, white supremacists, mercanaries and corrupt law enforcement who are hunting Cash... Alot of the outrage was based on the misconception that Cash kills innocent people when infact they are searching for him and will try to kill him on sight...

I never knew you made a video on this topic and I think it's awesome that you did. Something this game has made me ponder about in retrospect is that if it's one of the few gaming experiences available where a true moral choice of being a good guy exists. The game actively discourages from not killing and, if you have to, keeping it humane. So what does that say about the players who try to complete the game with minimal murders? Isn't the truest test of someone's moral compass is that if they do something regardless of personal benefit, even if it means the game continues to score them low? Too many games incentivise you to be the good guy so it's not much of a true display of personal character when you're essentially being bribed the whole time. Likewise, what does this game say about those who went for the most gruesome murders to get the highest score and left no survivors? It's almost like that psychological experiment about the test subjects who were ordered to electrocute an unseen person in another room because they were being ordered to do so.

My question at 6:50, "A death row inmate with no redeeming qualities". Did you complete the game, cause if you did then you would know that Cash was innocent. You find that out as the reporter is driving you to her apartment. Starkwheather methodically set Cash up from the very begining. A murder he didn't commit, 3 years on death row. My theory is he used blow fish toxin to simulate his execution, kidnapped. Tourtured hunted like an animal made to witness the brutal killing of his entire family. The shit gets deep and despite the gore factor it tells a very compelling story. Making each one of us look inside of ourselves and ask/ If that ever happened to me would I survive. My honest answer. No, not many of us would.

>2:39 "that doesn't actively encourage violence against innocent people" That is complete horseshit. You're fighting against other criminals and convicts who are all serial killers, rapists and maniacs. You're not playing a home invader or a night prowler that stalks normal people on the street. You're dropped into a deserted area full of the most dangerous people. It's basically Escape From New York the videogame.

Violence is a lot more part of us as human animals than most people would need to know. In manhunt and gta the choices you make are too close to reality, although the deaths in manhunt are more pleasurable because knowing the “victims” are criminals gives us some catharsis.

You know what I think is the most terrifying side of Manhunt ? It's that it's a part of the whole "GTA" universe, it's connected to this universe. You get hints of Manhunt in the other games, just as the "wanted" posters of Cash in San Andreas, of when the characters talk about "Carcer City". I was just thinking about it the other day, playing GTA 5, walking peacefully next to the beach, sunny day, people doing their stuffs innocently. And I just thought "Damn, in this universe, Manhunt truly happened. Cash really lived that. There is really a snuff industry out there" and it seemed kinda "unreal" even in the perspective of the game. And then I started to think about it from a "in real life" point of view. And I thought that just as in the game, I couldn't imagine that such things could exist in our society, but could you imagine that some psychos cut up people in pieces in front of a camera while you walk next to Los Santos' beach ? Exactly.....

Another game I think is similar here and worth thinking about is Party Hard. It's a little pixel-y game where the entire premise starts as a guy who can't sleep at 3am because his neighbors are partying. The solution? Go and murder every last one of them. And then travel across the country murdering party-goers to a variety of backdrops and settings. It honestly made me feel a little fucked up playing it, even though nothing in the graphics or visuals aren't very realistic. Eventually, though, this feeling was overshadowed by the rest of the games mechanics and how amusing it could be. But it definitely made me question what I was doing initially.

What a great way to put it "Violent video games arent responsible for our actions" Effectively stating that art imitates life not the other way around. Sure feeling nothing as you play a violent game or watch a violent film may say something about you as a person, but thats just it. It says something about YOU not the film or game.

2 years late but the game that impacted me most with how violent it was was Red Faction for ps2, i think i played it when i was like 10 or younger and what got me was how brutal the death screams of the enemies were, like i still remember how they sound to this day. It happens to be the first violent videogame i ever played too other than Destroy All Humans.

Violent games are cathartic for people. We live in a stressful world where we aren't allowed or can't beat the hell out of or kill the things that stress us like we did way back in the day....for the most part. Games like manhunt, sports like rugby, they achieve the same end. I loved how over the top Manhunt was. If you are looking for a great, immersive game that has dark tones you should check out Vampire Bloodlines if you haven't already.

I've never had a problem with violence in films or games. One of my favorite films is Salo or 120 Days of Sodom. I'm so removed from fictional violence that it very rarely effects me. i'm a huge horror movie fan, so that could be something to do with it. I do still get disturbed by films and games but its nothing that makes me negative towards the art itself. As long as its fiction, I have no problem with it existing.

Some of the most shocking video games I've played were actually adventure games, where the emphasis on storytelling made some of the acts of the charecters much more hard to digest. Games like The Cat Lady, Still Life, Fran Bow, The Walking Dead, I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, Sanitarium... Of course Spec Ops The Line made me rethink the way I look at violent video games. That game is a masterpiece!

I completely agree with the last part. Humans find violence thrilling. There is no denying that, and we indulge this sadistic part of our psyche through fantasy. We rightfully find real life violence disturbing as we can feel empathy for the real life victim. I remember watching some cartel execution which was about as graphic as something you would see in the torture porn style films like hostel. I was genuinely upset by it, feeling for the terrified victim as he was dismembered. We have this detachment when it comes to violence through film as we understand its not real. With cinema the boundaries are being constantly pushed. No longer does the comical yet mildly scary killings on a Freddie Kruger film from the 80's scare us. This is because we become desensitised to that level of horror. So cinema had to become more extreme and delve into a darker side of violence which had a more sadistic element to shock and bring us out of our comfort zone. Think Saw, Human centipede etc. I think what Manhunt does is it really makes us question our limit with this. We like to write off our inherent attraction to violence as its seen as uncivilised and inhumane. We justify our lust for violent media by hiding behind the notion that we are just the consumers of art. If we feel something has gone too far we can write it off as just a sick piece of shit and the film makers are the real fucked up ones for making the entertainment. Well Manhunt doesn't do that. It doesn't let you become unattached, you are a willing participant in the horror. YOU are fully in control of the violence and in a way you have to take responsibility for that. I think people felt uncomfortable because they like to be hypocrites and anything that pushes their buttons too far they can claim is immoral and distance themselves. The irony being that they themselves actively pursued that piece of entertainment for that exact reason.

Spec Ops: The Line completely revolved around this concept. Killing was specifically made to have no weight. But it slowly shows the consequences of things you've *already* done. And it literally attacks you as a person. And it messes with you as you watch the characters lose their minds.

I have an idea for manhunt 3 where you play as a murderer/assassin that completes an assignment but when he has to head back to his safe house a gang war starts on the night and all gangs are not only after the opposite side but also anyone that comes across. So the player spends there time trying to get home whilst killing off any gang members using his skills and as well as getting caught in the crossfire having to help those so that you can progress through.

I think the violence in this game is nothing compared to the feeling of fear that 3 guys will jump out in front of you with nail guns and hit you with their god-like aim. The most violent thing was the game taking me back to the other side of the map after I died because save points were so scarce.
