Former FBI profiler Will Graham (William Petersen, To Live and Die in L.A., CSI: Crime Scene Investigation) reluctantly returns to his old job to track a horrific serial killer known as "The Tooth Fairy." Massively underrated actor in my opinion. He was so good in this film. Him and Noonan just had brilliant parts. He really does deserve more praise.

Manhunter breathes. The camera work, the music, the performances. It's just alive. Red Dragon is okay, especially seen on its own, but you watch them back to back and Red Dragon feels lifeless and flat for every single minute.

I watched manhunter a couple of years back. I just watched to live and die in la, and recognised him. So checked out how filmography. What happened to him? In two of my favourite 80s movies then didn't get any big parts since?!

Petersen is so subtle and understated. So undervalued in a business which overvalues over-the-top actors.

He killed in this movie with his dark and brooding portrayal of a complex character in Will Graham. It wasn't Edward Norton's fault, though that Brett Ratner's Red Dragon sucked and he was miscast. Petersen should have gotten an Oscar nomination, but nobody saw the film at the time b/c the producer ran out of money for any mass marketing or wide release.

I don't see a problem whatsoever with the casting of Red Dragon, personally. All of the actors in the film are highly-acclaimed professionals, method-actors, even... The problem is not with them at all - it's in the nature in of the movie itself in a couple of places. As much as I enjoy Red Dragon as a more accurate portrayal of the book... it still does feel like an afterthought of The Silence of the Lambs. Like when they remake a video game, you know ? They get the latest technology, the latest version of the engine, props, all that... And then they go and do a much more down-to-earth and kind of charmless version of the original ? Same here, pretty much - Red Dragon feels like an efficient film... that has nothing on Manhunter's artfullness and mood. Feels like a corporate cashgrab, especially with all the extra time Lecter receives in Red Dragon, him mocking Chillton etc... It's only there because the fans would like to see it. And that's it. Still - completely efficient, well-made movie. Has NOTHING on Manhunter, though. Nothing.

@@viewtiful1doubleokamihand253 I should have been more clear on this point.The cast of Red Dragon included some of the finest working actors in the world . Michael Mann's adaptation of the novel though, was a darker, moody character study that was superior overall to Brett Ratner's effort. William Petersen was just a better fit for the role of Graham, just as the late Dennis Farina, a former cop himself, was perfectly cast as Crawford.
