FUN FACT: The producers were interested in Anthony Hopkins to play Hannibal in Manhunter; but he was busy on the stage in England, so they cast Brian Cox. Then, when The Silence of the Lambs was being made, they offered Cox the chance to reprise the role; however, he was busy on the stage in England, so they cast Hopkins. And here's the wild part: It was the same play, at the same theatre, both times.

The podcast Blank Check described the three (good) performances of Hannibal this way: Brian Cox is playing Hannibal as a human being. Anthony Hopkins is playing Hannibal as a vampire. Mads Mikkelsen is playing Hannibal as the Devil. I think that’s the best description of the different performance styles in these movies

I'm so glad James is finally covering the Hannibal Lecter movies. Manhunter is so underrated, William Petersen and Tom Noonan give such incredible performances and I love Brian Cox's Hannibal. Every actor who's potrayed him does a great job, but Cox gives him a reserved subtlety that makes him feel all the more like a reall psychopath.

What really amazes me about Brian Cox's portrayal of Lecter, is that while he does act like a completely normal person, you can just tell that something's off. It feels like an act, like he's trying too hard to act normal. That's hard to pull off and I can't even tell how exacly he's doing it.

So many people are surprised when I tell them that Silence of the Lambs is a sequel. And I always found it so intriguing that this version of Will Graham isn’t entirely sane either. Before I say what I’m about to say, I’m writing this as someone who’s read the books and only seen parts of the movies. I knew about Red Dragon before reading the series, but I thought that Silence of the Lambs came first and then Hannibal and then Red Dragon was released later as a sort of prequel. I didn’t know about Hannibal Rising so I assumed Red Dragon would be a prequel of Hannibal’s earlier crimes. My disappointment about being wrong was quickly trumped by my love of the book however.
@RaiffWilliams

@@icenine09what else would you call Silence of the Lambs in regards to Red Dragon then? It takes place after the events in Red Dragon, Will Graham isn’t in it but Jack Crawford, Dr Bloom, and Dr Lecter are. In the book Dr Lecter asks Clarice if she’s seen what Will Grahams face looks like after what Francis Dollarhyde did to him at the end of Red Dragon. Idk why you wouldn’t call it a sequel.
@ajbanky7870
@ajbanky7870 2 ай бұрын
@@icenine09 you don’t need to get so tensed up. I actually didn’t know that about the books since I haven’t had the pleasure of reading them yet. I can see where you’re coming from but I would consider it more of an interpretation matter. (As far as the movies go) Not all sequels have to be perfect direct continuations of what came before. Characters are recast all the time. Just look at the Evil Dead movies for example. You can view them as a continuing story leading into Ash Vs. Evil Dead or you can view them all as stand alone movies and neither would be entirely wrong. I consider it the same with these movies. And let’s save the term “misinformation” for politics please.

Truly the underrated film of the bunch. Michael Mann’s direction is sublime, the cast is quite wonderful & that gritty realism that Mann is so well known for works perfectly for his take on the material. More people should check it out (thankfully it’s gotten more appreciation over the decades) even though “Silence of the Lambs” will always be my favorite in the series; first one of the films I ever saw so a bit unfair sure but it’s one of the best thrillers especially in the ‘90s

One of the most famous lines in Silence of the Lambs (as shown here), is a mis-quote of the book and a joke, the real line is 'I ate his liver with fava beans and a big Amarone.' Firstly Amarone is thought to have been less well known as a wine, also it goes with liver whereas Chianti does not typically, secondly it is a medical joke, Lecter the medicine he would have likely been on MOAI's, three things you can't be on are, liver, beans, but especially alcohol, so he is telling Clarise he's not on his meds.

I agree. I also think Mikkelson’s portrayal is probably my favorite. Seeing him function as an actual psychiatrist was a great decision, and I honestly don’t think I can see the other versions pull it off as well. I’m bummed he won’t cover it because it’s great material. Show is so unbelievably nasty at times.

James, you have the best team of people! You do an amazing job in front of the camera and ofc all the behind the scenes stuff you do too. It's obvious that you have a great support staff as well. I thoroughly enjoy every episode beginning to end. Including the ads...Well done to whoever writes the scripts for the sponsor ads. They are always creative unique cute and funny. It makes them enjoyable to watch whether or not it's a product that I would use/need for myself or not. Thats why they are the only ones I actually watch without fast forwarding over. I think it important to give props to the support team. To run a channel this large this well, it takes an amazing 👏 team. Good job!! 😊

This has always been my favorite verison of Will Graham even including the original version in the book. Will in other interpretations play as a follower of Crawford but here Peterson plays Will as someone who isn't afraid to get in someones face. That exchange between WIll and Crawford right before Will figure out how the killer is picking his victims is AMAZING! Crawford tell him its too late and Will snapping back about Crawford manipulating him with the photos to the look on Farina's Crawford face when the second label is pulled off. To this day I can't tell if Crawford is amazed by Will's brilliance or disturbed by Will's imagination in that moment. Favorite scene in the entire series.

One of the things I love about Brian Cox's portrayal of Lecter is that he's closer to a genuine psychopath, even if that isn't exactly a proper diagnosis anymore. The part that sticks out to me is when he perks up with genuine interest when Will says he read Lecter's (or "Lecktor's") article in a psychiatric journal. It demonstrates Lecter's inner vanity, his narcissism that most psychopathic or antisocial individuals display. They want to hear about themselves, know about themselves, be acknowledged by those around them, especially if it's for something that they feel deserves recognition and positive feedback. As soon as Will tries to take the focus off of Lecter himself and back to the case, Lecter becomes bored and begins toying with Will, always trying to get the focus back on him. I don't think this is so much as an obsession with Will in particular but the inner narcissism of a serial killer coming out in force now that he has someone to talk to again. Brilliant performance by Cox.

Mine too. While James says Hopkins hams it up in the first one, I’d politely disagree. He’s a caged tiger for most of the film and you can see the wheels clicking in his head trying to get into Clarice’s head, the way he aggravates Chilton and ultimately the famous escape from the cage after Clarice’s final visit and confession. He’s definitely sillier once you get to “Hannibal” and most of “Red Dragon” although he does kinda try in the latter film to be less goofy but Brett Ratner’s direction doesn’t always help with that and some of the writing too

I'm so glad that you covered this movie. It is still so underappreciated, considering nearly every crime-drama has been inspired by it, and you could say that it was the birth of Gil Grissom before CSI became a thing. Personally I think Cox's performance is the better version, because as you remarked, it is a lot more realistic and believable, which actually makes it much scarier. I still rate this movie extremely high on my list and it is great to see it getting the recognition it deserves.
