@AlexGVid Жыл бұрын
I just believe that Michael Mann is a brilliant director. Not everybody appreciates his style: striking visuals, unique music that fits the mood, and above all, everything he puts on film is exhaustingly researched in order to achieve a realism that is unmatched. You can see it in all the forensics in this film, or the historical accuracy in Last of the Mohicans, or the criminal / police aspects in Heat, or the 60 Minutes references for The Insider (very good film as well). This could be considered a bit of a spoiler so don't read if you are currently watching the Hannibal TV Show: In the Hannibalverse, there is a theory that the very first crime scene that Will Graham investigates in the TV show, is actually the Tooth Fairy's first family kill. It's not actually stated, and there are no mirrors-in-the-eyes, but there are other aspects that fit his profile.

This is probably my favorite adaptation of the story and my favorite version of any of the Lecter stories. There's so many wonderful details in this, such as when Dollarhyde initially resists Reba touching his face, then later when she's asleep, he puts her hand there and cries, thinking he's found his answer. When he goes outside to meet her, he tells her "you look so beautiful in the sun." a callback to the Blake painting The Great Red Dragon and the Woman Clothed with the Sun. There are, incidentally, at least three different cuts of this film, all including something missing from the other two. The name was changed because Dino DeLaurentis thought Red Dragon sounded like a martial arts film.

"It feels good, Will, because God has *power*. And if one does what God does enough times, one will become as God *is*." This line, and that scene, is why I think Cox nails something that Hopkins, good as he was, only hinted at - the true nature of psychopathy is believing you are God, and that the way to achieve godhood is that you must kill and terrorise those beneath you, which by definition is everyone.

yah he was trying to tell will what dollarhyde thinks he is becoming..godlike..his transformation from a man unaccepted by society so he becomes the red dragon the more he kills..similar to buffalo bill's transformation from a man uncomfortable in his skin wanting to become a woman...the way he dances for the camera and out stretches his arms to practice his power as he turns into a woman

Manhunter is this best adaptation of any movie or show with the character of Hannibal "Lecter" (spelled Lecktor in this movie) in my opinion. William Peterson (Will Graham), Tom Noonan (Francis Dollarhyde) and Brian Cox (Hannibal Lecktor) all superb with a great supporting cast of Joan Allen, Dennis Farina, Kim Greist, and Stephen Lang. I prefer Brian Cox's interpretation of Hannibal because he plays the character emotionless, cold, and detached and also feels like someone you could meet in reality. Hopkins' rendition of Lecter was too showy to me. I don't think Red Dragon is a good movie at all.

Glad you watch Manhunter before Hannibal season 3 (the second half), since they're both adaptation of the book Red Dragon by Thomas Harris. This is the first on-screen portrayal of Hannibal Lecter and while Brian Cox does a good job of sticking to book Hannibal, Anthony Hopkins portrayal, while less faithful to the book is the definitive cinematic one. You've already watched the second cinematic adaptation, Red Dragon with Hopkins as Lecter, Edward Norton as Will Graham and Ralph Fiennes as the Toothfairy. I stick to the opinion I gave in a previous comment that the Hannibal adaptation of Red Dragon is the definitive one and while Richard Armitage gives an absolutely fantastic portrayal of the Toothfairy, Tom Noonan (who plays The Ripper in Last Action Hero) is by far the creepiest. The whole movie, directed by Michael Mann (Heat) has this trippy and hallucinogenic vibe to it. For fans of Thomas Harris, Michael Mann or the 'Lecterverse', this is a must see.

22:54 Okay I adore Tom Noonan's performance as Francis in this movie, it's one of my favorites ever, lol. That being said, I've watched it many times! The part when he puts her hand on his mouth when he's crying. It took me a few times to connect the dots, but I think that's related to the earlier scene, when she wants to touch his face to see if he's smiling...he doesn't let her, because he's extremely self conscious about the scar on his lip. So, in the scene in bed. I think it's two things. First, she's asleep, so he's less self-conscious about her touching his face. Then, the main thing...she wanted to touch his face to see how he was feeling before. So here, he's crying and he wants her to feel that, to know how he's feeling. That he's sad and in a lot of pain. He was too self-conscious to 'let her in' on his feelings before, but deep down, he desperately wanted that closeness, and for her (someone) to be aware of his suffering. Also, right before that, he makes a point to put his head on her chest. Again, it took me a few times, but I realized he was listening to her heartbeat there. Maybe mostly an affirmation that she was...alive? lol. versus his victims, which, as dead bodies, were his fantasy baes "accepting" him, etc. But she was an actual a real/living person next to him this time. Even the song at the very end (with Will and his booty shorts) is called 'Heartbeat,' and so forth. Also, her listening to the heartbeat of the tiger...the tiger I feel was a stand-in for him. ...eg., her being super close to this immense threat, without even realizing how dangerous it was. And he was vicariously feeling her closeness through her interaction with the dangerous tiger, as he stood there watching like a creeper. lol. (And yes, I think was aroused, too). But she hears its heartbeat, and so that theme is there again. That desire for real/living connection. Also, back to the bedroom scene, he did 'climax' lol; it was really brief and understated and he barely reacts. Again, takes a few times to pick up on. And then, the scene with the pollen after (when he's in the van when her coworker drops her off).... 100%, yes, it was just his issues/paranoia/mental illness/whatever making him see their actions in a romantic way, which lead him to way way overreact to that perceived rejection. It just shows that he was way beyond help. It was impossible for him to have a real relationship at that rate, no matter how much he wanted it it, because he was way too too sick/effed up. So, yeah, I could go on about every subtle thing in his performance, but I probably already sound creepy enough lol. I just think he did such a great job conveying so much with such subtle nuances. Again, it took me a few times to understand it. The first time I was just utterly captivated by his weirdness and behavior, before it made sense more sense what was behind it. But I did get that he was suffering a lot, and that was enough to draw me in.

I like the alternate ending to this which has Will go to see the family that the killer was planning to kill to make sure they were safe because he still has the killer's thoughts in his head.

The Cinematography of this Movie was beautiful . This is much closer to the book . They had no where near the budget but man did they use every dime of it .

The ending of the Red Dragon movie is more accurate to the book. The tattoos and eating the painting were also from the book.

Now that you have seen this Michael Mann, William Petersen collaboration you should take a look at the 1985, William Friedkin directed "To Live and Die In L.A." This stars William Petersen, and Willem Dafoe.

I think I went to see Red Dragon in the theater. There was one really good part where Will Graham goes to visit Hannibal, and they are walking around a track. Well I really had to use the bathroom. The part where Hannibal lunges at Will Graham was when I tried to get up to go, and I flung my popcorn everywhere with that jump scare lol

Lector in this one is more book accurate I think. Collative Learning has a pile of great videos braking down the psychology of Lector and the movies.

I became huge fans of Michael Mann and Dennis Farina (Jack Crawford) off the back of this film when I saw it in 1986. I’m with you, I prefer this Will Graham to Edward Norton’s. I enjoyed Brian Cox’s edginess at the time. Clearly, Hopkins is the iconic Lecktor. I haven’t seen Mads’ yet. He feels perfectly suited for the role. If you hadn’t recognized the resemblance, Stephen Lang (Freddy Lounds) would go on to be the big baddie in at least 2 of the 30 James Cameron Avatar films.

Brian Cox actually stuck closer to the book but Tony expanded it in interesting directions.

Red Dragon is closer to the novel but it's worth mentioning that the film (Red Dragon) is absolute s**t. 2 main characters are miscast (and I'm an Edward Norton fan), the writing and directing is basically painting by numbers. Lektor is spelt correctly, it changed in SOTL for a wider audience. This is a film I show my students as an example of great film making. If you get the chance/time to watch it, one of the other ones is "Don't Look Now" or "Let The Right One In". Hope you liked it and as always will press the like button and really appreciate your uploads and company🥰

One of my All time favorite movies 🎬 Well casted & brilliant Cinematography. The soundtrack is great too. I grew up watching Silence of the Lambs, & watched Red Dragon in my high school years. After finally watching MANHUNTER for the 1st time in 2013 & recognizing the Director Michael Mann(Last of the Mohicans, HEAT, The Insider, Ali, Collateral, THIEF) This became my favorite adaptation of Hannibal Lector on screen, Brian Cox is a tremendous actor

Where'd this version come from? The one I've always seen ended like Red Dragon with a fire at the killer's house, mistakenly believing the killer is dead but he shows up at Will Graham's house and is killed there. I originally saw this when it came out in the 80s and this is the first time I've seen that ending

From what I heard for this adaptation of the book "Red Dragon," the reason they changed the title to "Manhunter" was because there had been a prior film called "Year of the Dragon," which had been a major box office bomb when it came out
@PaulOdontknow Жыл бұрын
The style/editing of the final act is meant to demonstrate that Graham is more in Dollarhyde's mindset than his own and seeing things through his perverted outlook. But then when he tells Reba, I'm Will Graham, he's showing he didn't loose control of himself fully, this time. This Hannibal is the most like the books, the combination of erudite and vulgar and physically imposing. Also, pollen is serious shit in the south, especially from oak trees.
