Time For Chaos is a playthrough of Masks of Nyarlathotep for the 7E Call of Cthulhu role-playing game system by Chaosium.
A mysterious lost expedition sets in motion an epic globe spanning adventure as investigators come face to face with ancient evils beyond the scope of human comprehension. Often considered the greatest role-playing game campaign ever written, Masks of Nyarlathotep stretches the boundaries of horror, driving both characters and players insane since its publication in 1984.

I have never heard such an impressive piece of voice acting. Troy could have just done a lazy generic Australian accent, but he really added to the character by making it an Australian whose aristocratic English family fell on hard times after his infancy and had to send him to school in a working-class Cockney area, following which he spent a lot of time in the USA before moving to live in the deepest Australian outback in later life. You could really hear it all in the accent, it was exquisite and really brought the character to life!

I enjoyed watching Rob and Ross dying as Troy butchered that impression. There’s an Eddie Izzard bit where he plays a Bond villain with an accent imitator that’s “stuck in demonstration mode.” Troy’s accent reminded me of that quite a bit. 😂

And goddamn. ROSS. "Such arrogance to think he would speak in a language we could understand... when he would speak in the language of the Angels." Vaughan never ceases to impress. I don't think I've ever seen a character's downward spiral in Call of Cthulhu so magnificently portrayed.

This is a fantastic series. It's just getting better with every episode. Watching the players grow into it as they develop and sink into their characters, and start to bounce off each other has been very entertaining. Troy is an excellent storyteller and seems made for cosmic horror. He is the Dick van Dyke of Australian accents, though.😂

My god, that look of pure shock from everyone, especially Rob at 2:02:41 is just amazing. I legitimately can't wait to see how post-Peru Carter deals with it. On an unrelated note, has Troy ever called for a Education roll? I feel like there hasn't been one since they got out of Peru, if at all.

Edit: Wanted to say I love this show, best role playing cast I've seen in years and that include the big guys. Realized that I may have come off overly critical below, so I wanted to say that for context. Two pieces of advice first for Tory: Buy a better trash can or put rocks on top of it. Second for Game Masters watching: Be very careful when you override a charter's actions like that photograph showing up when it shouldn't. It was a great moment and in this particular scenario and game it was very effective, with the implication being that a character's madness is being expressed with them taking unknown actions. It even ties into how they drew awful things without knowing, but it can become a problem if done too often as it will begin to erode a player's feeling of control over their character. If a player beings to feel like they are losing control of their charter and have to 'work' to maintain it they can start to become fatigued from playing. It can lead to paranoid actions that if left unchecked can side track a session away from the planed story and towards actions to prevent undesirable outcomes. For example, imagine a whole session where players just tying everything down so none of it will move around on it's own. Also player paranoia can manifest in less obvious ways, like a player burning every note/photo right after looking at it to make sure it doesn't appear again. That sounds like great role playing until you realize they will want to make sure it's done EVERY time so they cant be caught out. Now think about a character having to solve a problem, like burning something in a car and having to work though that scenario, it starts eating into game time for little practical gain. A solution to that is to just tell people when a note is 'important' and should be handled with care and then make sure not to go back on that. Players will only interact with objects of importance and not introduce them selves to every statute they come across because that one time they met one that could talk or something equally exhausting. And look I've written another mostly pointless youtube essay, great. Well it's done and mostly proof read so I'll leave it here -Karl PS: I think my time would be better spent attending a creative writing class at the collage down the road, I could use the assignments to start seriously working on the lore for the Anomaly Noir Cyberpunk TRPG I've been making.

My idea for the ending of this season is Vaughn winds up in an asylum, Feiruz isn’t too far behind him, Margot and Carter are gonna need LOTS AND LOTS of therapy. Vaughn is just taking hit after hit to that sanity! He had a low sanity to begin with so this shouldn’t be too surprising but I still feel bad for him. I wonder what new characters are going to appear next season. These four are getting VERY close to the edge of being unusable just from sanity losses. I wonder what the finale is going to have in store. 4 1/2 hours is a very long time for one episode. But I do like long form videos over short videos to keep my brain occupied for a while.

The Hands Resist Him The sad doll is holding an old TV tube. The boy is in daylight but we see the moon reflected in the upper window of the painting. I've always thought this was about the way television changed society. The little toy girl is a representation of both a missed childhood and the infantilization (and obviously, objectification) of the feminine that has been heavily reinforced by tv since the nuclear family was established, post WW2. The little children in the window are the ones already lost. The boy will be missing out on the culture, society - what all the other kids are doing. The thing about that moon though - it looks like the diode warm up light on old tvs. You used to have to wait til the light came on, while the tv 'warmed up'. There was a little hole cut into those old tvs that looks somewhat similar. It would be orangish (sometimes green or blue) when ready. This creates some suspense. The tv is trying to warm up, chasing the boy indoors, away from his life of gaiety outside, to be with the other children. Is he in daylight or does he squint before the glow of an old television screen? The hands don't resist the unseen, television horror. They resist the boy. They are the idle hands of yore, made so by sedentary distraction, in the darkness of the indoors, up at night, watching, dolls (toys) and other childish tasks eschewed. The suffering femininity has tried to sabotage the device but, it's too late for her. She is second place in society at the time of the painting. It's a powerful piece. A 50 year old depiction of the 'go touch some grass' meme.

Watch in horror at Troy's Aussie accent (Very Land Down Under...The Mass Turnpike). Revel in Noura's unbreakable control as she powers through it for about 15 minutes (felt like 2 hours). Be wholly creeped out by the pre-show banter as they'll try to give you arachnophobia. Expect the gut-punch cliffhanger and still have it get you anyway. Be utterly amazed at just how good the cast is. Keep trying to forget that this is going on winter break soon, and we'll miss it a ton.

Man this series just keeps getting better each week! Fairuz heard about Cthulhu over a phone call. What a stunning way to work the title into the game! Margo and Vaughn slowly going mad has been a highlight of the series. Fairuz isn't too far behind them. And poor Carter, he's just trying to hold his friend group together and eat shrimp cocktails. Also, it may be months away in real life, but I cannot help but smile when the day of my birth (January 23) is mentioned. I mean I was born in 1990, but I can be excited about a day that's nearly 100 years ago, right?

The opening banter got me this time. I got a hamster infestation in my condo once. Presumably escaped pets from somewhere else in my complex. A very specific trio, a sandy-furred Mom and a red-furred Pop and their wee little naive Laddy, who was white and red and sandy-brown. I was really aware that yes, they were vermin, and they were peeing and pooing in the corners of my condo and raiding the compost and other food stores: I found the wee Laddy *literally in the bottom shelf of my fridge* once, I still have no idea how he managed it even given the flexibility of the rodent skeleton. But Christ: I just could not bring myself to kill them. They were so adorable, so sweet, so *embarrassed* when they got sighted: Mom and Pop each had their own special sprints they did when they knew I was going to spot them and had figured out I was hostile to them. I was so conflicted. Eventually, I set up traps and caught Laddy. And killed him. I still feel bad about it, he was such a sweet Boi, he was just doing his thing. Neither of his parents ever fell for the traps: I think they just died of despair when he died, somewhere in the walls. There was an awful stench for some months that I'm certain was them (b/c I never again saw them after I trapped their offspring), but I didn't have the heart to go digging for them wherever they were. I just invested in massive amounts of electrical air fresheners until the stench stopped. Their skeletal remains are surely somewhere in the interstices of my condo and I will, eventually, find them. Not looking forward to it.
