Seems obvious when you explain it. Yet, so many writers don't seem to understand. Compelling characters have depth, whether they are male of female doesn't even matter.

Pretty sure Wicked said "Alan Ripley" and not Ellen, but Ripley is a badass.

before this video even started i was thinking of Penny Lane from Almost Famous, Kate Hudson plays that role so well. Honorable mention to Zooey Deschanel as that type of casting in other roles. Great list!

The Real Question Is Wicked A Mary Sue, Or A Manic Pixie Dream Girl?

The "Mary Sue": spot on; a perfect example of lazy, ideologically driven writing that is ultimately not only uninspiring but boring and boorish. The "Manic Pixie Dream Girl": I disagree with the critic and his criticism. Why? Because there is a well written MPDG from a classic movie: Belle, from the original (AKA Only!) Disney film. Not only was she smart, well read, and a hard worker, she had the emotional maturity, grace, and patience to get through The Beast's mental walls, run up the Dark Tower in his heart and drag him into the light that is Life. That is no mean feat, nor something to be dismissed as "just helping the male protagonist progress." Trust me, when a man withdraws from the world, builds walls and mazes around their mind and heart, and ultimately absconds himself in a Dark Tower with only a small grimy window to process the outside world, they will not give that up easily. Can MPDG's be badly written? Yes. The key to writing them well is to demonstrate the emotional maturity and patience that comes from dealing with trauma. Leave that out, yeah, it's a stale trope.

how could you say things on things that people agree with. some of the manic pixie dream girls are played by actresses that are not as dreamy or cutesy as the characters that they are portraying and usually come across as condescending or disparaging or just mean, whether that is due to the directing or the actresses themselves i do not know.
