The finest song written about The Spanish Civil War .
@oskarobit5 ай бұрын
Very applicable to today. Many people from all over the world came to fight against fascism in Spain; remember that Franco received the help of Hitler and Mussolini to bathe Spain in blood; something that the brainless who vote for the ultra-right today wield with stupid pride. So many people in exile, after the Civil War, fought against the Nazis in the Second World War. For example "La Nueve" (mostly Spanish Republican soldiers* =150, men and women) took part, among other actions, in the liberation of Paris being the first Allied troop to enter the city under the orders of Le Clerc. We should be more concerned about what is happening in neighboring countries because it can be repeated in our homes: the rise of the ultra-right in the world, crazy Milei, Bolsonaro, Le Penn, Putin, Zionist genocide in Palestine, Ukraine, dictatorships of all colors.... (*) not to be confused with the U.S. Republicans, the Spaniards were leftists, for real.

Working Class men left their jobs to fight against Franco's Spanish Fascists...one of the Welsh Miners was asked why he was going - and replied with the line about shooting rabbits. The title comes from a poster of a dead child, killed by German bombers, with Germany aiding the Fascists. My grandmother (born 1901), told me about the men from my area in S.Wales walking down our street, leaving to fight. Franco was allowed to stay in power after Hitler and Mussolini were killed...then the USA, on 9/11/1973, overthrew the elected government of Chile, installing the Fascist regime of Pinochet...

La Rambla is a street that runs down the centre of the old town in Barcelona. I guess the International Brigades comprised of foreign volunteers for the Republican cause, would have marched up it. I remember when I first visited Barcelona and walked that street, this song came straight into my head. I wondered if I'd been born 60 years earlier, would I have had the courage to join the International Brigades and fight the facists? I didn't know the answer then and I don't know it now. I hope I would have. Glad you liked the song. The Manics are an amazing band. Maybe try Motorcycle Emptiness, Faster or A Design For Life next.

Great band, anthemic indie rock with real depth. Please check out 'A Design For Life' next. This album was the first with lyrics solely written by bassist Nicky Wire, the band taking a song about the dangers of fascism and the Spanish Civil War to number one in the singles charts. Rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards co-wrote many of the band's lyrics before his tragic disappearance in 1995. Sadly, he has never been found since and was legally declared deceased in absentia in 2008. Maybe check out 'Motorcycle Emptiness' from his time with the Manics (from their debut album).

The live version of Tolerate they played to close out their set at the Isle of Wight Festival this year is well worth checking out .. very gooesbumps and emotional .. the deep message from the song is more and more relevant than ever (the video to it is pretty special too) since its release 25 years ago ... as are a lot of their songs even as far back to when they broke out in the late 80s early 90s.

So happy to see you give the Manics a 2nd try! They'll reward further listening - a wonderfully consistent band, with real depth to their lyrics. This is from their 2nd transitional album after the disappearance of their band member Richey Edwards who wrote the lyrics to their early stuff. They somehow carried on after he disappeared and actually got bigger. 'Walk Me to the Bridge' is a more recent favourite as is 'Tsunami' off the same album as 'If you tolerate...'. 'Everything Must Go' and 'A Design to Life' are classics as is 'Motorcycle Emptiness' and I'd also recommend 'There by the grace of God' and 'The Masses against the classes' for a absolute ripper! Keep up your excellent record for treading the path less travelled musically - it makes great viewing!

The song title is taken from a recruiting poster for the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War. It is protesting Margaret Thatcher’s Tory government, in the UK. The poster originated after the bombing of Guernica by the Luftwaffe, Hitler having despatched them to aid Franco’s Nationalist forces. Check out the Picasso painting, “Guernica Night”.

If I remember correctly that "If I can shoot rabbits, then I can shoot fascists" line was a direct quote from a Welsh farm-worker who volunteered for the International Brigades during the Spanish Civil War / Revolution. The song is contrasting the courage and idealism of the generation that went to Spain to join the fight against fascism with that of the present. A very beautiful and powerful song.
@delorangeade11 ай бұрын
An irresistible soaring melody that always reminds me of Duchess by The Stranglers. There's something about James Dean Bradfield's voice that hits the spot for me, and can make even the most unlikely lyrics work. The Manics always stood up for classic rock music at a time when it was very out of fashion, so I appreciated them for that. Shooting fascists is something that should never go out of style.

@@jerkedevries I know, my friend. I'm following the news. Just recently I read something like this: "a society where one expects immediate solutions to problems such as poverty, (... I forgot the other two) is a society that will go more and more towards fascism". Maybe this internet and speeded world has something to do with it, I don't know. Those are serious problems that need time and responses in various fronts. So, don't we feel the anger growing when an internet site lasts more than 10 seconds to appear on our screens? We are so unprotected we can be so easily harmed. And we'll look for immediate answers, in or with revenge towards the problems and those who causes them. That's what I'm thinking about it now. Just a thought.

@SpaceCattttt11 ай бұрын
Yeah, this is one of their more popular pop songs. But if you really want to get "Manic" I suggest you give their later album "Know Your Enemy" a listen. It's arguably their least popular album, but I consider it their masterpiece, and I suspect it was poorly reviewed because several of the songs were inspired by the band's trip to Cuba, where they played the first rock show by a western band in front of Castro and Co. Politics aside, however, there are some stone cold classic songs on that album.

It's one of my favourite MSP albums, and I never got why so many think it's one of their worst 🤷♂️
@SpaceCattttt11 ай бұрын
@@murdockreviews I think it's perhaps because it's so uneven and contains so many different styles. Nicky Wire called it their "Sandinista!" which has always been famous for its sprawling nature. They did release a 20th Anniversary Edition of this album a couple of years ago, which separated the songs onto two discs. Apparently this was the band's intention all along. But I prefer the uneven "mess" of the original. Not every song is great, but at least half of them are superb. My favourite is perhaps "The Year of Purification". Total hit single, if you ask me. So of course it was never released!

Interestingly, their biggest hit. This was a great album, but actually - if you knew their other material - very melancholic and mellow. Due to the downbeat nature of most tracks, one has to be in the mood to get through the whole disc. Nonetheless, it features some of their best tracks and epic production. On the follow-up album they came to the conclusion "Freedom of speech won't feed my children".
