Nicky Wire gave a girl I know his bass after a concert... She got him to do a certificate of authenticity afterwards too! Guy is as nice as he seems. Classic Manics song. Greatness.

la tristesse durera toujours”, or “the sadness will go on forever”. Supposedly among the last words of Vincent Van Gogh, before eventually succumbing to his self-inflicted gunshot wound in July 1890. Written by manics guitarist Richie Edwards who supposedly killed himself as well.

Also, as well as 13 albums, before their 1st album, there were several singles and the New Art Riot EP. Their 1st single was Suicide Alley, a self funded Record which is very rare but other recordings exist. the song title is the last words Vincent Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo before he killed himself. 🌻

Richey Edwards did write songs for the 4th album and his lyrics were used in later albums. The production sound for Gold Against The Soul was considered to be too polished at the time as compared to their debut album. It's become more popular with the fans and the band themselves over time. The Holy Bible which followed is as you described - a brutal masterpiece.

He didn't write songs, only lyrics.

@@stevemorris2734 Songs without lyrics are pieces not songs, so without his lyrics there are no songs. That definition irks me but I had to say it because it sounds like you're diminishing his input.

Until mentioned I never picked up on the INXS beat. Been an MSP fan from when I first saw them in 91-ish at a gig up until Everything Must Go album. JDB's solo work is also impressive (to me)

Now we're talkin'. Not their best album, but this was the first single of theirs that made me prick up my young ears ;-) Always a band for happy go lucky-lyrics *lol*

*Gold Against The Soul* is my personal favourite album from the Manic Street Preachers. I do however find *The Holy Bible* quite hard to listen to at times, but they do have some great songs on it. But after the disappearance of Richey James, I found the album *Everything Must Go* more of a tribute to him. But sadly I felt that the Manics (although were more successful without him) had lost there way lyrically and musically. Richey will be sadly missed 😢

Theres about 45 classic tunes from these guys .Even some of the B sides are worthy of album tracks. Edit ref the holy bible . It’s considered and often included in top albums of all time in the UK. Know your enemy is a swollen album buts it’s got a load of great tunes on it , return to a grittier sound after This is my truth album era ( odd fact , I met my wife due to the bass line from So why so sad .. our works radio wasn’t tuned in properly and all I could hear was the bass progression, liked it and found it was by manics who I’d liked but stopped listening to, went onto their webpage and they had a chat room and the rest is history . That was around 2001 and we now have a kid )

Tune. For what it's worth, The Manics adore Guns n Roses. Try Freedom of Speech Won't Feed My Children for something very different from them. 👍

To say "adore" is an overstatement. JDB said in an interview that the band wish they had written Sweet Child O Mine.

@@lastfirst5689 JDB also learned to play guitar by playing along to Appetite for Destruction. GnR were a huge influence for the band.

Not 100% true regarding Richey Edwards input he wrote or part wrote 2-3 songs on everything must go and gave them a book of lyrics witch would later become journal for plague lovers.

No Surface All Feeling isn’t a Richey song, but it’s one of only a handful of tracks that actually contain guitar playing by him. He was there for a few of the initial sessions when EMG was being written, and played a short riff that was kept. James said that Richey did actually play and his guitar was always plugged in, but they turned him down low when they played live. James generally went back and re-recorded his guitar playing in the studio, so he could actually be credited as a rhythm guitarist. The other example on an actual recording is the big chord on La Tristesse Durera.

The missing bass players name is Richard James Edwards but was more usually known as Richey James. Just so that there isn't confusion!
