I think he loved his family too much to have just run off to Israel or wherever. His sister Rachel’s ongoing (to this day) pain following his disappearance would have cut him to the bone, for real. He was not a cruel, callous man, in my opinion.

I never understood why richey didn't get the help he needed. I first got mentally ill in 1996 and the support I get has been on going. I never knew of the manics when he was a member. I did not discover them until the if you tolerate this your children will be next single. It's a shame the NHS let him down

He got a great deal of help I believe, in and out of hospital and rehab. The rest of the band worked harder to get him the help and treatment he needed.

Time has shown that despite their niceness, Richey and Nicky were nothing special at all. Reasonably articulate but their intelligence has been massively overstated and overrated and that shows in the records, which are almost always crap.
