Sean says he can't understand how someone as intelligent as Richey couldn't help himself, but I think maybe his intelligence made things harder on him because he couldn't put on rose colored glasses like most people do to get by. When you look at the world so realistically, life can seem very dark. I also think he had some self esteem issues (just based on biographies I've read over the years) that intelligence can't fix.

I've heard that said a hell of a lot. More intelligent people are more likely to be depressed. Don't know if it has truth to it but I've heard many people say that.

@@stephaniemcquillan6167 Right. And I also think in general people on the lower spectrum of the IQ curve are more prone to actually suicide themselves because they have it tougher to put together a tolerable enough life for themselves. I also think it has something to do with impulsiveness. It's often a decision out of panic.

an excellent observation, VivaCohen. I whole-heartedly agree. My friend was found hanged in a park after walking his dog. He used the dog's leash, but the dog stayed until the ambos arrived. That is the kind of thing that Richey felt so strongly about, but I won't go into it here. The miracle and sadness of life, all mixed up. All the best.

They have preserved Richey's legacy magnificently. They've done so because they loved him as a friend, and clearly love his family too. Anyone who suggests they "Sold out" is living in a silly fantasy world.

Richey seemed like such a gentle sensitive soul who wanted to love and be loved. Perhaps he's found that somehow, somewhere. I hope he has. Since I live near where the Manics grew up I've always had a personal fascination with the band and particularly Richey. He obviously had a strong intellect and strong feelings. It's a shame he couldn't fulfill his needs in his old life. Maybe he has all those things now and if so, let him remain at peace.

Just a horrible horrible situation. Not because I've been a fully paid up insatiable Manics punter since the arse end of 1991, but because these are all humans dealing with the most unimaginable thing as friends. Your friend first and foremost is dead. He's absolutely dead and gone. Yet year after year you're expected to be his mouthpiece.

That`s the very thing that bewilders me. James, Sean and Nick, as lifelong friends, have to remember him to the fans and the public, walking that fine line of respecting his decisions. How do you do that?

I always looked at Richey in the same way as Cliff Burton in Metallica. He was the fighting spirit and soul of the band. That’s not to say both bands didn’t release great material after their departures. But their essence wasn’t quite the same anymore.

I think Richey planned the perfect disappearance, but messed it up because of everything he was going through & ultimately decided to take his own life by jumping off the Severn bridge. It's a shame there's no closure for his friends & family because his body was never found.

This is the reality of it all for these guys who loved Richey and felt helpless to help him but even now, decades later can't escape that feeling. They can't escape it because the fans and media always shove it down their throats at every opportunity. I doubt Richey meant for that to be the case when he left. Richey was an intelligent but irrational-thinking young man who seemingly, couldn't comprehend the pain he would end up causing the people who cared about him.

3:00 Camus didn't say that. He's paraphrasing something from Dostoevsky in the brothers Karamazov (the grand inquisitor section), 'if there is no god then everything is permitted.' Sounds like something Camus might say though.

Camus did say something similar in his book The Myth of Sisyphus, ironically it's when discussing Dostoevsky's book "Demons" which reinforces your point about Camus and Dostoevsky toughing on similar themes. The quote from Camus is "“The reasoning is classic in its clarity. If God does not exist, Kirilov is god. If God does not exist, Kirilov must kill himself. Kirilov must therefore kill himself to become god. That logic is absurd, but it is what is needed."

I don't know if you can blame fame 'per se', but there are certain types of people who can't grasp what fame actually entails until it actually happens to them- and when it happens, will react very badly. I don't know if Richey had a problem with fame, or if it was something more that forced his hand. I guess we'll never really know.

No, they did gigs to pay for his rehab, actually. No-one asks that question about, say, Jim Morrison and the other members of the Doors, because he was the frontman and assumed to be in control (despite being out of it, even in TV interviews - Clive James wrote about it at the time). Richey would have seemed even more in control when he wanted to.

@@jamesthecat Yeah. And the rehab centres were a joke!! They made Richey WORSE. One of them kept him drugged up and the other one just forced God down his throat. And tbf Richey wasn't afraid to go out of his way to shock people. So after a while the band just grew used to his publicity stunts and morbid outlook on life. There is a conspiracy theory that the band and his family actually know where he is but they have been sworn to secrecy. . .

It's, not... Richey was seriously sick when that happened, everything that was going up with him (which would make this comment a bible) got to a point he couldn't handle it anymore. Richey's car was found next to the Seven Bridge, which was and still is, common for su*c*des, maybe... he expected his body to be found, but the water stream was very strong... and well, he became a giant mystery. Or he ran away, for as much as he could and then realized his problem weren't back there at home.. He literally escaped his entire support system (his sister, his friends, the girl he loved) I don't think he was planning to go far. It's just so sad.

No Surface All Feeling It seems to be from a soundcheck which explains the keyboards taking centre focus and an acoustic guitar playing rather than an electric one. The song is also the last one Richey played guitar on (which is why the sound quality is different at the end bit of the album version as it's supposedly from the last studio session before Richey disappeared).
