Dissing other bands for attention, in the spirit of the old school punks... great fun. Folks took Wire's ramblings a little too seriously, especially when the Manics have cited Freddie "I'm glad he died" Mercury as an influence (particularly on 'PfaYM').

Yes indeed, I'm just thankful we lived in such a tolerant time then, that we could trust ourselves to take things with a pinch of salt! The same was true of his comment about Stipe, it was about being sick of media speculation & celebrity hypocrisy, at a time when their much-loved manager was actually dying.

Tidal waves of anonymous hate and possible career cancellation terrify bands into not doing the same in this era. You'll struggle to find a bad review in any music magazine. I miss those days.

He was Nicky Vicious or Sid Wire when he said that glad he died thing.

I couldn't even slightly agree more. Politics is Bolitics. A load of pointless headache inducing horsenonsense. I only subject myself to it because Professor Tim Wilson on KZbin really likes it or something and I really like him. Plus Nigel Farage and Greg Gutfeld and Michael Gove and Michael Fabricant and Dr Liam Fox and Greg Hands and so on. But I hate it all utterly.

with all due respect, if you're of that opinion then why in fuck's name are you on a Manics video?

I couldn’t disagree more. Politics and art have ALWAYS gone hand in hand. One has always influenced the other massively
