In the most general way you are correct, they are similar. Now we go into the lecture, lol. Manifestation is where you have a particular thing you wish to happen. You will then attempt to make that happen, normally through visualisation and imagining the situation to have happened already. There is a process where you need to visualise and essentially meditate on the outcome. There is no paraphernalia involved although some people might write or draw in a book or otherwise represent what they want visually. Ritual magic, and by this I will refer primarly to the western form, will attempt to achieve a result through a complicated sequence. Depending on what you are after, there will be correspondences that will be important, which can be colours, days of the week, plants, incences and all manner of things. So candles of a certain colour, an auspicious day of the week, altar cloth and robes of a corresponding colour etc will need to be used. The place and the people involved need to be purified and grounded. There is a lot of preparation involved and the amount of effort applied in this process is often believed to have a direct impact on the success of the operation. Of course you then have to write and prepare the ritual itself. A solo practitioner will then perform the ritual, burning incense and doing whatever acts they have decided are relevant to their intention. A group will have a leader who may well delegate some actions to others to do. Mental approach is all important and the people involved will have to maintain as close to a trance state as possible during the process. Then there are other versions. Most of them will follow the above format in one form or another, so Thelemites will do this in their particular style, Wiccans a slightly different way and so no. There is also Chaos Magick which is a little more free form in its approach. The attitude of the magician is more important than correspondences though there will still be a ritual framework. The ritual framework is a tool. It keeps the focus on the intention and it is aiming to impress upon the subconscious mind both the importance of what is being done and also the actual details of what should happen, ie the result. All the work is done in the subconscious mind so once the ritual is over and everything is cleaned up you no longer think about the intention, it is put out of the mind. In this way it is different to manifestation, which aims to keep this in the mind until it appears. There are other ways of making things happen too. Magicians may make a Talisman to make something happen. Again, this is done with ritual preparation and the Talisman is then put away safely afterwards. Essentially it is like a computer program, given its code and power and left to do its work. A follow of the norse pantheon might craft runes instead which is effectively the same thing. A Taoist will make talismans on paper following a prescribed routine and pattern that is from books many hundreds of years old. You probably get the idea. Lots of ways of doing stuff but essentially all doing the same thing, sending a message to the subconscious that you want something to happen.

As far as I can tell, ritual magic just uses more props and ceremonies to produce manifestation, but it's basically the same thing. But there is power in doing the rituals, crafting and gathering the items, arranging them in a certain way, reciting the spells, etc., that makes manifestation more effective.

All these practices serve to cause a change in one's subjective universe(SU). A change in the SU can cause a change in the objective universe(the OU- matter, energy, space, and time). The more real it is in the SU, the more one can affect the OU. Like the movie "Dumbo", the elephant could already do the impossible(fly); the magic feather(the ritual/rite) only gave him the confidence to try! "TRY" is the magic Word given to Paschal Beverly Randolph, the great grandaddy of sex magic! Also, I am about halfway through the Bansenshukai - so far so good!

Manifestation seems like the passive version of ritual magic where the mind/consciousness of the person becomes a perpetually lit altar.

For me, it is all about "Will" and how to focus that power to achieve what you wish. There is no real difference except for the way someone has learned to manipulate energy to achieve their goal.
