ABOUT US
We’re the Lockwoods. And we’re traveling the world to experience-up close and in person-all the natural wonders and distinct cultures that our kids would otherwise be consuming only through textbooks and TV. We think it’s a better way to learn and we’re working hard to fund this little experiment in the hope that our kids will grow up wiser, kinder, and more grateful for the beauty of our diverse planet and its people.

I wish the Philippines will also have a Museum of Modern Art because our modern artists are no less talented. In Singapore, I always visit their MOMA and surprise, surprise...there are always a lot of artwork by Filipino artists!! BTW, thank you so much for featuring our museum. I feel that there mot enough Philippine museums which will highlight Phillipine culture. I recommend going to the AYALA MUSEUM in Makati which high;rights Pre-Spanish Filipino arts and cultural items...you's be amazed by goldworks and items on display.

José Rizal was a polyglot who mastered 22 languages including Catalan, Chinese, English, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Japanese, Latin, Malay, Sanskrit, Spanish, Tagalog, and other Philippine languages.. There were at least nine women linked with Rizal; namely Segunda Katigbak, Leonor Valenzuela, Leonor Rivera, Consuelo Ortiga, O-Sei San, Gertrude Beckette, Nelly Boustead, Suzanne Jacoby and Josephine Bracken. These women might have been beguiled by his intelligence, charm and wit.

Never knew Juan Luna had a tragic life.

The accepted "meaning" of Spoliarium may be just a theory. Being from the upper class, I doubt if Juan Luna experienced the class struggle between the Filipinos and Spaniards. I always take these "meanings" with a grain of salt as they were formulated by scholars years and years after the artist died. The scholars who came up with thesw meanings are obviously ultranationalists who want to romanticize certain elements of Philippine history.

That’s a valid point. I will say the painting felt very powerful seeing it in person.

Jose Rizal wrote about the Spolarium thus: "To speak of the impression that it produced, of the polemics that it raised, is to repeat what everybody knows. It obtained the first of the first medals, and the Filipino youth in Europe presented the illustrious artist a palette surrounded with laurels. The Spolarium that thrills, seizes and agitates violently, drying the tears that looms in the eyes, is the condemnation of the barbarism and despotism of a great people towards a small one that thirst for light and liberty."

@@livethephilippines I agree. The first time I saw the Spoliarium, I felt chills coursing through my body. I think even someone who has little knowledge of art will be able to appreciate a powerful painting such as this.

Too bad you were not able to show the 13 basi revolt paintings. It was painted by the artist live on sight while it is happening in 16th century when spaniards are executing and torturing filipinos because of just wine rebellion... your gonna get into tears when you see the painting and read the story...
