Jason-AE512: A deep dive into the technical aspects of aerodynamic coefficients and how they can be manipulated for various analyses. The video is highly technical yet informative, providing insights into the complexities of aerodynamic behaviors in controlled environments.

AE 512: Interesting how unfortunately arbitrary these coefficients can be calculated, this definitely emphasizes the need to outline every assumption made. The nuances regarding rotating the coefficient are also very interesting and glad these were explained.

In my opinion all aspects of aerodynamics are very interesting to study. And I always like to thank the birds first of all.

AE512: Interesting how you can non dimentionalize various ways, but there are just best practices. Provides insight on how coefficients are representative and not a real, say, force

Hi Sir Christopher Lum, ive been learning a lot from your videos. Excellent teacher. But, where is the "Wind Tunnel Test and Data Reduction" video? I could not find.

AE512: It's interesting how there is a correct reference area, reference length, etc. The underlying rationale for any one method of reference seems pretty wishy washy and more based on standardization.

AE512: Interesting bit about the rotation of the coefficients, that simply a rotation matrix can't be applied to the coefficients since they aren't vectors. I know you had mentioned that in previous lectures, but coefficients ARENT vectors!

Yep, you've got the main idea, we just have to be careful.

AA516: Hey Professor, it is a great lecture as always. However, I'm a bit confused at 11:00 min. Why do we choose Sw? And what is wrong with adding both Sw and St? Thank you!! (Daniel Teshome)
@ChristopherLum
@ChristopherLum 2 жыл бұрын
Daniel, great question, the reference area is arbitrary. It is simply convention that Sw is used. This has roots in the fact that for some wind tunnel tests, the tail is actually removed so St doesn't contribute to the lift. As long as you are consistent on which area is used to normalize you should be fine.

AE 512: In the adding/subtracting example at 11:10, why do we only consider the wing planform area in the correct method for calculating the lift coefficient and not some combination of the wing and tail planform area? Is it just the convetion to use the wing area only for the total lift coefficient?
@ChristopherLum
@ChristopherLum 4 ай бұрын
Good question, you could use either area if you like, it just important that we use the same same/consistent set of areas. If the entire aircraft doubles in size, then the forces/moments should double.
@SayedTorak

AE 512: when solving for CL (11:00) why don't we use wing + tail area instead of just the wing area? seems like we would be over approximating CL by not accounting for a total area. I am not an AE major so I could be not thinking about this correctly. Thank you for the great lecture Prof. Lum.
