Demographically, Manipur spans 750sq km. Historically, the Kuki people were known as Khulmi, encompassing present-day thadou, Hmar, vaiphei, Lushai, Phalam, Zou, paite, Kom, Maring, Chothe, Anals, Moyon, Lamkang and other pseudo-Naga groups, and inhabited areas across India, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. As fierce headhunters, the Kuki resisted British colonization, refusing to serve as labor corps in World War I. In response, the British employed a 'divide and rule' policy, undermining the traditional Khulmi (present kuki) chieftain system and empowering the Meitei monarchy. Unfortunately, the Indian government has perpetuated these geographical and ethnic divisions and reclassified the nomenclature, denying the Kuki people self-determination.
