Since I am studying abroad a small town girl can totally relate,I am changing my self and I can see some changes in me as I was an introvert looking (but not) only in school,underconfident girl and undergone bullying though I was quite intelligent in class.Since i came in college I am transforming my self ( credit goes to my roommate,my environment,my new learning and past mistakes) and improving continuously ❤.

Hi, Manisha. Love the new format. Regarding the watch detail you noticed. I would consider the angle that the watch was a gift from her ex-fiancé. But Manisha, don’t you think the film was a little too problematic? Like it just symbolised that women who come from small towns, wear salwar kameez and does not drink or smoke is a total bahen ji or not modern/educated enough. The film was literally imposing western standards of modernity. I am not against this film entirely, neither I am against Western culture. I myself as a person, I am a very westernised person but who are we to impose what is modern and what is conservative? What is there a need to show a woman who does Jai Mata Di and does not speak fluent English as unintelligent?

Did i miss something she wasn't unintelligent..she was just naive very naive coming from a protective middle class family it was rajkumar's perspective that she wasn't modern enough which was pretty shallow that's why she left him and at the end she still wore kurti that suited her better in the beginning also she was wearing jeans only which are still western but very ill fitted

I get what you're saying! But remember, Rani did wear jeans and tops in Delhi, which are western clothes too. It’s just that those were a bit out of fashion at that time. That’s why her coming back in a kurta at the end was so important, because it broke the stereotype that only western clothes make you modern! Also, Rani was always intelligent, but the people around her held her back. It was only when she started making her own decisions that we saw her real growth.

@@ManishaMalikIndia I agree but there was too much exaggeration in my opinion, for example- Rani getting scandalised on hearing Vijaylakshmi's child being born out of wed-lock. To me it just gave an impression that the makers were trying to portray Rani as if she is a girl from a village in the 1950's and not a girl who came from Delhi in 2014 who has a TV and computer at home.

Open loose long hair and loose frilly long dresses don't feel liberating to me. The hair falls on your eyes/your face and obscures your field of vision and irritates your face. Loose frilly long dresses interfere with movement. To my mind, short hair or long hair tied back and comfortable trousers are actually liberating.
