Dave, The value of this video for the students is: 1. By recovering the charge, it requires us to pull a deep vaccuum before replacing the charge, which is what I teach because the "deep vaccuum", in my opinion is another layer of safety against any moisture that may be in the system, I also like the nitrogen purging, as nitrogen attracts any moisture besides preventing carbon build up. 2 The way you remove the bin takes that extra technician step (as opposed to the "parts changer" approach) of exposing the condenser coil for a complete cleaning (if needed) and the condenser fan blade, etc. Well done! We just received that particular model here at the school. This will make an excellent training video for the students. As always, well done! Woody Elgin Community College HVAC-R Program, Elgin, IL

Dave, dude, thanks for this vid! I also work on a lot of Manitowoc's and replaced hundreds of fan cycling switches. A frequent occurrence on Manitowoc Ice Machines. Manitowoc wants you to pinch-off the tube, and braze in the new switch. I call BS on that crap. Once you pinch it off successfully or not, you don't have room to braze in the new switch properly without overheating it. You also cannot make it round again causing a restriction to the control. Why, because there's not enough room to put in heat sink paste or cool it with a rag. I always recover the refrigerant, braze in an extended 1/4" tube, and replace the fan cycling switch where it will be easiest to work on in the future. These guys at Manitowoc don't know field service at all. We do! Great job dude! Please let me know if you have a Manitowoc that has a PTCR as a starting component. Your best bet is to replace that POS with a real Potential Relay and Start Capacitor. Manitowoc is putting those things in their systems now and are failing horribly. Replace any PTCR you see with a potential relay and start cap., on top of the all ready installed run cap., if it's still good. Manitowoc is starting to go cheap and loosing compressors. Enough failures and they will do the right thing while under warranty for the future of their product.

@@reedstephens5208 Just install a normally open relay instead to control the fan and forget this troublesome fan cycling pressure switch. You want the fan to be on at all times except when the hot gas solenoid is powered. Very cheap and easy fix, works much better than a pressure switch... What I do is get a cheap 120v coil relay, and power the relay coil by splicing into the wires that go to the hot gas solenoid. A small white rogers Type 91 relay uses so little volt amps for the coil, it won't bother the machine, and then connect the two wires that used to go to the fan cycling switch to Common, and normally closed contacts on the relay. This nice thing with those relays is you have 2 sets of contacts, so if one set gets burned you can use the other one. If the contacts get welded or the relay fails, just use spade terminals to land the wires on the relay. That way in the future if it fails you're only out like $20 or less, and it's a simple 2 minute easy parts change to fix. Forget evacuating the machine, brazing, change filter drier (which is a PITA to get to on some machines), burning wires with trying to squeeze a torch into those small spaces, and then recharging.

What problem was the faulty fan cycle switch causing? I tear down and clean and sanitize my Neo U140 every 3-4 months and after every cleaning I get a huge block of thick ice that won't melt off the evaporator. It happens for a while and then corrects itself. Unfortunately this time no matter where I put the ice thickness float I get ice that's way too thick. Any help is appreciated in determining what's wrong. Thanks!
@NorCal-refrigeration5 жыл бұрын
Dose it have a small probe by the floats?
@BlackHawkPSU5 жыл бұрын
@@NorCal-refrigeration No it does not have a small probe by the floats. It was manufactured in 2014. The floats are part numbers Manitowoc 040001783 Ice Thickness Float Switch and 040002396 Harvest Float Switch. The bridge thickness is now staying too large even with the thickness float set on the smallest cube setting. The bridge is at least 1/4" thick or a little more. At this time at least the sheets of ice are falling off the evap.
@BlackHawkPSU5 жыл бұрын
@@NorCal-refrigeration I just replaced both floats and still the same result! This video showing all... kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWrQl32qhstnbtk

Would a faulty fan cycle switch cause a thick bridge issue? What if the fan cycle switch was bypassed for several months? Thanks!
@NorCal-refrigeration4 жыл бұрын
I would not think so. Ice thickness probe and board should initiate harvest. I usually find poor harvest due to lack of heat in harvest when fan cycle is by passed.
@BlackHawkPSU4 жыл бұрын
@@NorCal-refrigeration I ask because this goofy NEO has the fan cycle switch bypassed for several months. The harvest float was artificially raised very high in order to go into harvest or else water keeps running and a huge slab is formed on the evap. New floats installed, new pump, and new keypad. Condenser is clean as a whistle as is the entire machine inside and out. Machine is level. 2014 model

@Jason-wc3fh Жыл бұрын
You mentor is a typical residential hack that doesn't use nitrogen. Without nitrogen, you ask for problems and contamination inside the pipes to clog metering devices and other issues. Any real refrigeration tech is quite familiar with nitrogen. It also saves on time when pulling down since you can inject some dry nitrogen to get remaining moisture out of a system during triple evacs.

That bypass doesn't work, I tried that but it cools the condenser too much with the fans running all the time, and then the machine takes too long to harvest. I had an old machine with this same problem that I fixed this on last year. You do not need to replace that fan cycling switch. It's totally stupid (unless the machine is running somewhere where the ambient temp is below 50 degrees which isn't a good idea anyway). What I did to fix a 2002 era Manitowoc machine (QY280 series) was remove the wires from the fan cycling pressure switch and run them thru the normally open contacts on a small 120v White Rogers Type 91 relay I installed in the electrical compartment. And then power the relay coil by splicing into the hot gas solenoid power supply. This way when the hot gas valve is energized, the condenser fan immediately turns off, and when the harvest is complete the fan is powered again. The machine now actually works much better with this, since the fan stops instantly instead of wasting some of the hot gas before the head pressure drops enough for the fan to stop during harvest, and it starts freezing faster since there isn't a spike in head pressure at the beginning of the freeze cycle. Doing it this way with recovering the charge, ordering a new fan cycling pressure switch, brazing, vacuum, recharge the machine would have cost the customer nearly as much as that machine was new, and much too expensive for a 20 year old ice machine. Cost of a cheap 120v relay and some wiring is so much cheaper, and actually much more reliable in the long run. For some reason those OEM fan cycling switches seem to fail a lot, maybe they can't handle the inrush current of a 9 watt condenser fan motor... lol. And replacing that relay is a cinch if it ever fails, I used spade terminals so any parts changer in the future could fix it, swap the relay and go. That was a dumb idea from Manitowoc, an air cooled machine designed to be run indoors in a conditioned space does not need a fan cycling switch. For example no reach in refrigerators or freezers that I know of have a fan cycling switch, except maybe Coca-Cola can/bottle coin operated vending machines, or outdoor ice freezers at a gas station, but those are outdoor rated appliances. Ice machines do not work well in unheated spaces or outdoors...
