@@craiganderson3154 Good. Synths work extremely well for Fincher's contemporary films, but hearing them in a period film would be a bit jarring. Imagine if he had hired them to do the score for Zodiac and they used synths instead of the incredible score it actually has. It wouldn't work in a film set in the '60s-'70s and it definitely wouldn't work in a black and white film set in the '30s.
@craiganderson3154
@craiganderson3154 4 жыл бұрын
@@LanceVanceDance84 Agreed. Especially given how hard he's obviously working to make this period specific. Not going to go so far as to say the "only use available at the time instruments" approach was required, but a synth soundtrack would have definitely been an issue.

"it takes place in the thirties, it should be filmed on 4:3 black-and-white film"! Rembember Alfonso Cuarón's 'Roma'? That movie took place in Mexico, 1970, was shot in widescreen digital 65mm and looked phenomenal. I think Fincher is going for a Citizen Kane kind of style cinematography, modernized. Basically what Orson Welles would have used, where he active today. Looking forward to this.

My thoughts as well. Fincher always seems to be using the newest technology instead of doing things how they always have been. Filming on digital and distributing with Netflix is the most modern you can get in terms of filmmaking. I like that he's doing things in a modern way for this movie since Citizen Kane was also very modern for the time.

The sign swaying in the wind, the coin spinning on the ground, the way Mank falls onto the cart, the bottle rolling out of his hand. How much time and constant takes did Fincher spend on getting them *just* the way he wanted? Those tiny, nice shots that you’d overlook pretty quickly probably spent hours to get right.

I swear: the first thing I notice in this trailer is not the Great Gary O. Yet the suondtrack. I was thinking "wait... who wrote the music? I know those harmonies and I love it..." Then I read: Reznor and Ross... Ok David, you have my attention (as any film you made before)

Aside from the cinematography techniques, this film doesn’t look like it was made in 30s or 40s. It has that digital look and perfection when film supposed to have some obvious imperfections like The Lighthouse or Bait.
