Originally titled, "The Winter of our Discontent: Breaking the Habit of Negative Thinking", this lecture was delivered in Los Angeles on September 29, 1963.

Historical Context: 2 weeks before this lecture was given, four Alabama school children were killed when a bomb was set off, after many weeks of tension and violence in Birmingham, Baltimore and other areas of the USA. One month earlier, Dr. King gave his famous "I have a Dream" speech in Washington, in this most important and volatile years of the Civil Rights Movement.
Mr. Hall often made vague references to world and national news events, while always keeping in mind that which is immediate for each individual in their personal lives. In this lecture, we can hear his distinctions between what is beyond our control, and what we have the power to work with in our own selves.
Points of interest from the community:
7:16 Wherever the economic pressures become too heavy in the lives of people, there is a tendency for the monetary factor to assume too great an importance.
12:17 There seems to be so much evidence that man improves his conditions much more rapidly than he improves himself.
15:21 But if we are not successful in personal living...

Thank you so much for posting all these!! Sometimes it’s hard to listen to a whole episode because sparks start shooting off in my head as I’m listening. Dots get connected, random parts of my life start to make more sense and I regain my sense of wonder for the world. No joke - dead serious- these lectures have made a huge difference in my outlook on life and have given me a vocabulary for the things I’ve worried and wondered about my whole life.

@@ManlyHallSociety Well you guys rock! I've only just started listening, but looking back through your catalog I can see you've been incredibly consistent over the last several years. Strangely enough, it was one of the things that gave the lectures some extra credibility when I first started listening and was skeptical. I thought, "If it means enough to these people to keep at it for years, there must be something to it!" I know it ain't for the money! 😅 Seriously though, thank you.

I say Some people are unworthy of wisdom, This man has always been a hero to me. since I was 13, But this is gold. Almost as important as the Secret teachings, for it provides an Example, Of self reflection, That seldom people would ever welcome. I was In search of something, and indeed, Eureka I have found it.

It's almost scary how the past few videos have touched the deepest aspect of my troubles, my ignorance. I've dreamed of Mr. Hall once. I'll never forget it. But these few videos recently are just too coincidental in relation to the circumstances I'm experiencing. And with my attitudes towards life.

@@ManlyHallSociety Oftentimes when listening, I've had a rather strong impression that he was talking to me or about me and my state of being. What doubt I had about this, when this started with repetition was obliterated by numerous syncronisity's--being directly related. With repetition, I no longer believe in coincidences. All in all, the higher powers that Be and this work has contributed to help me make better choices and with that I presume others alike. I am grateful. 🕊💛

I definitely see what you are talking about. At the same time, I can see the shift from living out of harmony with Universal Law (or Spiritual Principles-as I see it) to living in harmony with these Laws, would undoubtedly alleviate negative thinking. Maybe the negative thinking (or bad Karma for that matter) is the Law working to draw our attention to our deviation from it. Just my 2 cents. What do you think?

I’m one that has been deviated white a bit And I know the effort to realign will take more than I’ve got left.... without some divine help... something I’ve always felt I’ve needed... @@MrDizzyvonclutch I can relate. I walked through a lot of darkness. Heroin addiction had me doing all sorts of bullshit that was wayyyy out of alignment. I have definitely come to find that the only way I have made any small steps towards living within The Law has been with the help of The Divine. I know an elder that says to me, when I make the prayer to ask for the help, the distance between where I am and where I want to be is already halfway traveled. So, I’m praying that your prayers can help you travel the distance you want to go. All places are within the fold of The Master. I pray that whatever help you need meets you halfway

I am always a student to the spirit of the teacher. M.P. Hall is so much the spirit embodiment of those who he was a student to, I hope to someday be one with this spirit as well. He talks of the old days, the older people, the old ways…. He is speaking into existence those who taught him, epochs of people.

Some people are rich, but have nothing, yet, some people are poor, but have great riches. Jesus says, "I am the light of the world the ones who come to me will not live in darkness, but be given the light of life!" Do not look at his appearance or stature (e.g. status, wealth, career..etc..) cause I have rejected him! Unlike man the LORD does not look at outward appearances he looks at the heart. Stop judging by mere outward appearances, start judging correctly! If anyone longs to see life and to see good days; have no evil spoken from the mouth, have no deceit in the tongue, turn away from evil, do good, seek peace and pursue it. The froward are an abomination to God, but his secrets are with the righteous. For the ones who fear God he will show them his covenant. To fear God is to hate evil, pride, wicked ways and the froward mouth do I hate! The man fears God and turns away from evil! May your heart never decay and your soul lives on forever! The thief only comes to steal, kill and destroy! But Jesus came to give life and to give it abundantly! John 5:40 And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life. Isaiah 65:14 Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit. James 5:13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. James 1:5-8 If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do. For the defiled (i.e. corrupted) and unbelieving, even their minds and conscience are defiled (corrupted)! Their hearts have become calloused or else they'd understand, turn, be converted and the grace from God through Jesus Christ would heal them.

My favorite part of this supposed quote, other than never having been uttered by a 33rd Degree Freemason, not just because of the poor grammar used, is the inferred idea that "success" is a universally agreed upon thing that is also linked to "ignorance" somehow. Just BEING middle class may be "success" for some. Also, the idea that Freemasons who've been given the honorary 33rd Degree are all upper class and hold those in a lesser economic class in contempt is so funny to anyone familiar with ACTUAL Freemasonry and not tin foil hat wearing imbeciles, who've never read a single Masonic text, getting all of their "information" on Freemasonry from here on KZbin, mainly from other imbeciles who've also never read a single Masonic text. Freemasonry has ALWAYS been mainly middle class people. Dingus.

@@holymountaineer9325 The top level mainly middle class? I think not. Maybe you should stop calling others imbeciles when you yourself don't really know what goes on at the high levels of organizations like The Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, The Jesuit Order, Skull and Bones, etc.
