I think AAA horror games have more quality but they can get stale after a subgenre gets popular. A lot of them start becoming horror themed shooters and that's just boring. Indie horror games have a varying quality and some of them are just crappy knock offs made for quick buck (usually by placing a bunch of ads). But you can find really original games, even for free.

Got to say, really didn't think the true villain, the secret puppeteer, was going to be some kind of evil spirit possessing the toybox. That surprised me as much as there actually being an ending where you defeat it, even with the necessary sacrifice. Brave kid, doing that to keep his mom, grandmother and cats safe.

You probably were going for a different way to display text but im not sure you can pull it off with the monochromatic color scheme? This is such a beautiful game tho. I'm in love with the style and the 3d look. It stands out to me from other designs I have seen so keep at it!

The thumbnail and the game both reminded me directly of Calm Time (which I replayed way too much as a bored kid)! There are quite a few elements specifically reminiscent of Calm Time to me, such as the non-billboarded 2D sprites, the knife/stabbing game theme, the text appearing at the top of the screen that types as it displays, a motherly character seen preparing food in the kitchen (2:31) who can be stabbed (9:46), a second mysterious female character that haunts you, the piano riffs intermittently playing in the background, and the background music that fades into silence. However, this game has its own unique art style, storyline, depth, animations, dialogue, multiple endings, backstory into the characters, and so much more that make it far different and much more fleshed-out than Calm Time.

I really love the hand drawn art style, which reminds me somewhat of the surreal landscapes of German expressionist films such as The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It makes you feel as if you are in a children’s book. Mom and Grandma look flat rather than three dimensional, which adds to the children’s book effect. The black and white pallet creates an atmosphere that is quaint, charming, eerie, and ominous all at once. The use of occasional color is very effective because it draws out certain emotions in the player. A scene I found especially beautiful was the ending in which blue and red coloration flashes into the house, creating a netherworld aesthetic. The atmosphere made the game truly moving at times. Something I find interesting is the potential backstory of the game. What was the boy’s family dynamic like? He wouldn’t just stab his cats and mom out of the blue, especially when he had a birthday cake waiting for him. It seems like the grandma must have been coaching the boy about the need to offer blood to her master for a while, gradually warping his psychology to the point where he was willing to be a killer. The mom is oddly upbeat in spite of this, making me wonder how much of this dynamic she knew about. It seems like she would at least have noticed something was ‘off’ about the boy and his grandma, but she doesn’t seem to show it in the game.
