Theory: pyro knows what he does but in order to not look at burning corpses with blisters he asked Mann co. to manufacture goggles and that is what he wears. Over time his imagination got to the best of him, he pictured Smokey saying "fire is no one's friend" after that sentence he remembered what he actually does and beat the crap out of the bear.
