Manna Dey was not only a great musician and vocalist, he was also a great man. Just look at his humility. He is encouraging an amateur artist to sing and playing harmonium for him ! I have been told that he had the largest library on music in India. He was very bitter about the Shastrya sangeet being lost in Indian subcontinent and pointed this out at every performance. You can not compare two gems and so we should not even attempt. However his knowledge of Shastrya sangeet was unparalleled. Thanks.

Late Manna Dey was a very reserved person. I have never heard any comment on fellow singers by him except on Late Md Rafi sahab and Pandit Bhimsen Joshi. In a Bengali weekly magazine Manna Dey narrated his journey to musical world (in several weekly issues) and I was lucky to read those narratives. He and Md Rafi were great friends. Both of them liked to fly kites and used to fly kites in Bombay. Manna Dey boasted that he was a better kite flyer than Md Rafi. In several issues of the magazine he expressed his great respect to Md Rafi as a singer. His respect for Md Rafi was expressed in such a way it seemed to me that he was almost a fan of Md Rafi.

Manna Day was a classically trained singer and Rafi once told Manna Day that he(Rafi) often listens to Manna Days songs at home. However, Manna Day on many occasions accepted Rafi as his idol and commented that Rafi wasa better singer than him. No one can match Rafis versatility. He could sing any kind of song with great ease. The most intriguing thing about Rafi is his effortless singing. I have tried to sing many of his songs but there is always strain on the voice except some songs. How could Rafi Saheb sing so EFFORTLESSLY is the 9th or 10th WONDER of the world. No one has been able to explain this to this day. Man tarpat hari darshan, one of the greatest bhajans even recorded in hindi cinema, was written by a muslim (shakeel), composed by a muslim (naushad) and sung by another muslim (rafi)...
