Manoeuvring Traditions : Contemporary Visual Expressions in South Asia
By Dr Rajashree Biswal
Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose India Cultural Centre, Kuala Lumpur
25 July, 2024
Guest of Honour: Ms Amrita Dash, Counsellor of High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur.
The above illustrated lecture given by Delhi-based Odia Art Historian was a stimulating as well as a useful discourse and analysis offered by Dr Rajashree Biswal, director of New Bridge India. Dr Rajashree Biswal, is here in Kuala Lumpur together with her husband, the well known artist Birendra Pani, who is exhibiting his works at Sutra Gallery.
Birendra Pani’s exhibition, Neo-Urban Avatar, augments the discourse and case/study that Dr Rajashree espoused.
Dr Rajashree Biswal’s eloquent dissertation added to the important knowledge useful in the increasing present engagement of Malaysia-India cultural links.
The talk brought acute awareness of how India established her distinctive identity of ‘modernity’ within the larger tapestry of influences in contemporary visual art experience of India.
From her illustrations, Dr Rajashree referred to the dialectics between tradition and modernity and how many contemporary Indian artists (many of who, had exhibited at Sutra), were and are inspired by the rich traditional visual art practices in India. The artists in turn re-interpreted these influences in their contemporary social messages and statements.
Guest of Honour, Ms Amrita Dash, started the ball rolling by her discerning opening speech which stimulated the ensuing talk.
There was a strong participation from audience during the Q & A session where many interesting questions were asked. The talk engaged Malaysians with the current present rather than the usual looking at Malaysia-India past engagements.
