This is why I believe that Sylvie Guillem has to be one of the world’s greatest dancer no one could extend and show so much emotion through her body. She is incomparable.
@pam06264 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The extension she gets on her pointed leg is extraordinary. I’ve never seen it on another ballerina, regardless of height.

Beyond her exceptional physical abilities, she has this "je ne sais quoi" which puts her in a league of her own. Mademoiselle Non is certainly the greatest ballerina of our century....

Sir Kenneth MacMillan Knew how to get the best from dancers pure human emotion in every step and movement you get so drawn in !!!!!

Not to get off the topic of the divine Sylvie but there were two other dancers on stage with her (at least two) one of who was Massimo Murre.. Since Sylvie was marvelous Murru had a large part in helping her accomplish that, which Sylvie would probably be the first to admit. He is a wonder -- one of the best dancing actors alive today .. beyond compare .. and who danced Lescault?? Sylvie deserves all the praise we can give her .. but she was not out there alone.
@nakis7411 жыл бұрын
This is very true and I am glad you have mentionned this. Sylvie was always very selective about her partnership with other dancers and she is right about that. Can anyone imagine Romeo and Juliet or Manon without a convincing duo of dancers who know how to communicate and share this communication with the audience? Massimo is an extraordinary artist, complete, noble, intelligent and deserves all the praise possible. They recently danced together ''Marguerite et Armand'' in Athens and it was breathtaking.
@judithbooth485511 жыл бұрын
Nakis Ioannides How I envy you being able to see them live .. There is a a video with Murru and Guillem doing Marguerite and Armand and of course the one with Le Riche and Sylvie -- unfortunately Le Riche retired in July and Murru will retire in October -- great for them, not so great for us -- and Sylvie will be sensible enough not to dance beyond her time. What a loss .. and who is around to .. not replace because that probably cannnot be done but .. who do we look to now?
@nakis7411 жыл бұрын
judith booth I learned that the occasions to see these extraordinary artists now are rare, so if it is possible one has to take advantage of the opportunity. When Sylvie danced her incomparable Manon at La Scala with Massimo, I knew that I just had to go and see them. Some friends of mine thought at the time that this could be repeated and that they would be invited at the Paris Opera (whci reprised Manon the same year) to dance the ballet. But they were not. The same with Marguerite et Armand. And they were extraordinary and so utterly beautiful, I mean they radiate beauty on stage. True, Nicolas Le Riche is retiring in July, then Massimo and Sylvie has indicated in interviews even when she was in Greece that she would retire in around two years. The end of an era of artists in the truest and noblest and most beautiful sense of the word.

I would love to dance Eugene Onegin with Ms. Guillem, but I guess I'd be too young for her. I saw her in class when SFB was touring in London, and I fell in love ...with the intelligence of her dancing.

She is light, coquettish, a young girl in love who will soon be torn between her feelings for De Grieux (marvellous Massimo Murru) and her need for luxury (the other two extracts from Manon at the party scene and her death scene complement her portrayal admirably). This is Sylvie Guillem revealing the very soul of MacMillans ballet. Lets hope that more theaters in Europe will follow La Scala"s example and the audience will have another chance to witness the genius of the Divine Sylvie as Manon.

I saw one video where the male dancer just kind of threw her on the ground at the end, instead of sliding her, and she landed, thunk-thunk. She was game though and popped right up to throw her arms around him.
