im not sure if you need to hire a mercenary group when u to take out the first bandit camp cuz u can bait them to the random Lord army and you good to go

Yes you can. But than you need to wait for the Lord baron and if you don't hit the bandits, you don't get the Influence but the baron will get it and than he can claim regions faster and you slower.

I am not sure if crossbowmen are better than archers. Crossbowmen have higher damage but the interval between their attacks is larger. I have 66 crossbowmen and fail to defend against the baron's claim on my land.
