Discovered your videos seeing the pedestrian bridge over the railway from google maps. Great watching a manual level crossing in operation. Was researching the Beam Reach 5 redevelopment history (on south side) and appears Manor Way was abandoned south of the level crossing to A13. Shame that pedestrian bridge was constructed and abandoned; appears fenced off from the railway emergency access road as well.

Manor Way was cut off by the construction of the HS1 High-Speed Rail Line, which opened in 2006. Before construction, there was a full road crossing here which provided access to the adjacent sewage works. The access here was no longer required as a new bypass under the railway beside Rainham station was built in the early 2000s. As a result, the full road crossing at Rainham also became pedestrianised just like Manor Way. I'm assuming the Manor Way crossing was closed due to lack of use as everytime I came to film here I never saw anyone else. Bit of a waste of infratsructure and money building such a large step-free footbridge, which now lies abandoned and was never really used to begin with. The crossing is fenced off now so I don't think there's any way of accessing the bridge anymore.

@@UKLevelCrossingsChannel Thank you for the feedback and history. I was thinking the highspeed rail was a factor and didn't know the date, along with the warehouse units constructed later next to the abandoned section of Manor Way. Thanks.

@@NarnianRailway No worries 😊 I've always found this stretch of the c2c line between Dagenham and Purfleet-on-Thames interesting as HS1 has caused many changes to the infrastructure, in particular crossings and roads being cut off.

I still kinda miss this level crossing ngl - though there was something about it and its surroundings I wasn't particularly keen on when visiting for myself, it was certainly a unique little request crossing. I like how you showed some trains passing the crossing in this video, as well as the operation of the crossing itself, - be it those trains that pass over the level crossing itself, or those flying past on HS1 (4:40 I think I heard the distinct sound of an older Eurostar unit that cannot be beaten by the newer units IMO). This is probably your best video of this crossing thus far - though (maybe?) you could have either edited or sped up most of the long wait for the crossing to activate towards the end of the video. Fabulous video nonetheless! 👍👍👌

Thanks 😁 Yeah it's a shame that this crossing isn't around anymore although I am glad I filmed here a number of times so I've still got videos to share. I always found it really interesting how it was cut off when HS1 was built and then survived for another 13 years, hidden on a small lane. It was indeed an old class 373 passing in the background. I deliberately didn't cut the video as I wanted to showcase the full time it took from raising the crossing to it being lowered again.

Can someone please explain to me, what those black pyramid shaped objects are for? My guess is, they are installed to avoid pedestrians to go on the tracks. Btw. is it the same with those wooden planks next to level crossings?
@UKLevelCrossingsChannel4 жыл бұрын
Yes that's correct, they are anti-trespass spikes to deter people from walking onto the tracks. The wooden guides also serve the same purpose 👍

It'll still forever be a mystery why LEDs were ever fitted there so close to its permanent closure...

I can only imagine it was a last minute or sudden change of plan to close the crossing. If there was any long-term plan of closure I'm sure the halogens would've stayed
