Easily the NOISIEST Least Used station I've done ... the traffic on the nearby motorway, plus the noise of a huge extractor fan on the outside of a nearby building that you can hear all the time that we're on the platform and in the shelter. SO MUCH background noise! Sorry about that ...

Hi there - i'm old enough to remember the network BEFORE the Tyne & Wear Metro opened, and up until then Manors (which used to be on the old Tynerider Circle to the coast and back) had nine platforms and was VERY busy! When travelling from Monkseaton either way round the circle, I used to always get off at Manors as it was the closest station to the shops of Northumberland Street and New Bridge Street etc. Return B.R. tickets were always to Newcastle (Central Station or Manors) for the same price. I remember access to the city centre was via walkways (over what is now the central motorway) which were always very busy and less of a schlepp than walking down to/from Central. The motorway and redevelopment made this corner of town a bit of a wasteland, but it is finally being built up again now after 40-plus years! Nice video....

The abandoned platforms are from the old Tyneside electric route, which became the Metro system. The old route used to run in to Central Station, but the Metro now uses tunnels so the old line heading north to Jesmond etc was removed from Manors.

I lived in the student accommodation around Manors for three years whilst at Northumbria University. I used to catch the train to/from Manors when going to Metrocentre - it was a handy little station! As some of the other comments say, the abandoned platforms formed part of a much larger station in the past. There are remnants of the track going northbound parallel to the dual carriageway and up to rejoin the Metro line north of Jesmond Metro Station. Also, there is remains of the former Manors Station entrance below on Trafalgar Street where there were steps up to the island platform. Sadly now boarded up!

Great Video and love the Manors gags during the video, as for the old disused platforms, they used to be Manors North which opened in 1909 and the current station was named Manors East until it was combined and named Manors, Another thing I noticed when leaving Manors Metro station on the right there is a bridge and the line at Manors North used to pass through there which takes you to the disused station of Jesmond which is nice, visited there myself. Manors Station is a great trainspotting place as well, the last time I was at Manors the footbridge on your thumbnail did broke my camera! back in January, I was taking a Instagram photo on the top of the footbridge and was walking down. As I got to the bottom of the stairs just went left into the railing and my camera in my pocket was pressed into the railing and broke the screen, so ended up having to go to Metrocentre to get a new one, non in stock and went across Newcastle even know I didn't knew the area for 45 minutes to a Argos in Byker! got there 20 minutes before closing time since it was a Sunday... sadly that footbridge never shown me any Manors lol

I vaguely remember the station before the metro opened and it was huge. I remember a lot of wrought iron roofing and glass too. It had a similar style that you can see at Tynemouth station. You can catch a glimpse of the old station I believe early in the Michael Caine film Get Carter. Certainly he comes down the steps that used to lead to the station early on.
@markstramtrainbuscapades17294 жыл бұрын
The disused platforms were the start of the loop line to Tynemouth, which was replaced by the Metro in the early eighties, hence the reason why the Metro's Manor Station is so close, as the line leaves the tunnel section to head onto the former Railway line.

Manors gets its name from the fact that Henry the 8th kept the Augustinian Priory there as the office of the Council in the North which became known as the King's Manor. Sometimes just called 'The Manors'. It was the 3rd biggest station in the northeast after Newcastle Central and Darlington, with 9 platforms. Numbers 1 and 2 to and from the coast (Monkseaton, Whitley Bay, Cullercoats and Tynemouth) via Benton, 3,4 and 5 for DMU trains to Blyth, Ashington and Newbiggin in SE Northumberland, 6 and 7 platforms where mainline and stopping trains to and from Berwick and Alnwick called, (also express trains to and from the coast routed via the East coast Main Line rather than Benton), while platforms 8 and 9 were for trains to and from the coast via Wallsend, and the Edinburgh expresses just thundered through there non-stop. Coast trains were electric and went in a loop both clockwise and anti clockwise, eventually returning to Manors before terminating at Newcastle Central Station. There was a third route to the coast from platform 8, the Riverside line, which served some of the east end suburbs of Newcastle and was also used by shipyard workers, and ran closer to the River Tyne. It is now a walk and cycleway. Very many commuters came into the station, especially from the coast; it was handy for the city centre and the quayside, then busy with shipping. In the evenings people would come into town for a night out. But rather less passengers actually began their journey at Manors though it was very busy on warm summer days with families bound for the seaside. A long footbridge linked all nine platforms and numbers 1 and 2 also had a subway connection which also led to 3, 4 and 5 platforms. Long steep stairs led up from City Road to Croft Lane and the city with separate flights of stairs at right angles going up to both platform 9 and then 8. Halfway down those separate stairways another subway linked the two sets of stairs to save passengers descending all the way down to the main staircase and then having to come all the way back up again to get between platforms 8 and 9. They could also use the long footbridge situated at at the other end of platforms 8 and 9. There were many freight trains passing through, especially carrying coal from local pits to points south and west, plus several trains from Edinburgh and Aberdeen and also from places south of Newcastle going north. Electrically-hauled freight trains down the hill to Newcastle quayside left from the nearby Trafalgar Yard. I spent 2 years as a teenage clerk there, 1959 to 1961 working in both offices, the main one at Manors North at platform 1, the other at Manors East on platform 8. Only the old 7 and 8 platforms are in use now and you would hardly recognise the station as shown in your video, now a mere shadow of its former self. No multi-storey car parks or motorways then, only the roar of trains or traffic passing in the tunnel below the station going up Trafalgar Street. There were over 20 staff covering from 5.30 am to 00.30 am the following day. WH Smiths and Finlays tobacconists had stalls and there were 3 pubs close by. Buses parked in the station yard. Large parts of the old station have been built on and the Metro has taken over.

It was fully covered. I didn’t even know a cut down version existed. Not on any transport map I have ever seen.

Correct - there were two seperate stations, called Manors North and Manors East, which were 'merged' into one 9-platform Manors in the late 1960s, just as services were being cut back. The current station is actually of East Station (what became Manors Platforms 7/8), the overgrown platforms shown are part of North Station (Manors Platforms 1/2), and there's still a bit of Platform 9 in situ, while the reason the western end of the Station is longer, is that it used to have a Signalbox at that end.

Manors Train Station actually is quite useful. As the Tyne and Wear Metro doesn’t allow you to take a bicycle into the Newcastle City Centre (Gateshead, Central, Monument and Haymarket).This means if I want to get from the north-side to the south-side of the River Tyne with my bicycle, if I have a flat tire. I can ride the Metro to Manors Metro Station then walk to Manors Train Station, catch the train to Newcastle Central Train Station. From there, get the train to Heworth Train Station and walk to Heworth Metro Station to continue my journey.

I strongly suspect the actual passenger boarding and alighting figures are actually a lot higher than the ticket data suggests. I grew up in Morpeth and used to regularly commute to Newcastle, and Manors was handy at times. Even if you specified Manors to the ticket office staff at Morpeth 9 times out of 10 they’d issue you a ticket to Newcastle (as it was the same fare). Equally, if you boarded at Manors to go back to Morpeth the conductor would usually issue you a ticket from Newcastle! This has probably improved figures since the introduction of ticket machines on the platform, but getting a ticket to Newcastle was usually no bad thing, as particularly in the case of a Return it was good ‘insurance’ as not all trains stop at Manors.

I went to St James's Park as an away fan from Lancashire in 1983 and back then the cops used to corral the away fans and escort them en masse back to the train station to get on the old football special trains. On that day they took us to Manors. There were about 2,500 fans so large away fan followings were probably the only time Manors station saw heavy usage. In a bizarre coincidence I had reason to make a work based train visit to Cramlington last Saturday and the train stopped at Manors which was my first stop there since 83 (I've only ever been through one other time on an Edinburgh train). It's certainly changed considerably.

Hi Geoff great vid - I've got another theory for the increase in passenger numbers. It used to be cheaper to get a day return from Manors to Durham than from Newcastle to Durham that worked on any train operator (LNER,TPE,XC) as Northern set the fare. You could then start or end your journey at the intermediate station (Newcastle), so I'd take the passenger numbers with a pinch of salt... however this fare anomaly seems to be fixed this year so will be interesting to see if passenger figures drop (not because of Corona)

It's going to get a regular half-hourly service, and it'll be quicker to change for the metro there rather than at Central or Northumberland Park if you're travelling to anywhere west of Newcastle such as Byker, Wallsend or Howdon.

I was in edinburgh last week and saw this station. It’s about 60 seconds from Newcastle itself and I can’t imagine any train stopping there!

I got a football special from Middlesbrough to Newcastle in the 80's. The ticket was to Manors but it stopped at central and we all got off.

I think the disused platforms are from the time before the Tyne and Wear Metro went underneath Newcastle Central and the lines were used as the connection to the Gosforth line.

There is a train at that stops there at 0554 too at Manors to Chathill but only stops at Manors, Carmlington, Morpeth, Alnmouth and Chathill

I remember in my younger years, when away supporters were chaperoned to Manors by the police. Being a Geordie Evertonian, when the Barcodes were in the first division, I would go to the match when we were playing up here, and after watching the match, I would always follow the Evertonians to Manors Station. This was before I started to travelling to Liverpool for Everton home games when I was old enough.

According to Wikipedia there were once nine platforms at Manors station. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manors_railway_station

Manors pops up in an early episode of When The Boat Comes In. Mrs Seaton takes on care of a small boy, whose Mam dies of an illness. Eventually she puts him on a train so he can go to live with some distant relatives in another part of the area. Whitley Bay Metro pops up in another episode, with rather a dramatic scene

That is crazy I've lived in Newcastle all my life went to uni here and never knew that station was there. I was expecting Blaydon station to be the least used

I actually think they're wrong. I believe Dunston station is the least used in Tyne and Wear. Sorry guys.
@johnioannides88634 жыл бұрын
Fair enough, maybe I've made the mistake of using Wikipedia, can't believe Dunston had 16,000 passengers last year!
