In today’s episode, Eli and Oscar learn from Joan Thuo, better known as Joan the Career Coach, who is a former IBM recruiter and a professional career coach.
The gents learn about the impact of a good CV, what recruiters look for in job applications and what postgraduates can do to break into new markets.
We hope you enjoy listening to this podcast half as much as we enjoyed making it because we had a ball!

This is a very important conversation and very timely! I would like to get Oscar’s and Eli’s thoughts on her comment about putting USIU applicant’s resumes at the top of her pile when recruiting. Where I am, a recruiter can not say that, let alone in a public platform because that is potentially considered bias… But most importantly, if I needed career and resume coaching, I would second guess myself about approaching her for that exact reason… Because, if she was recruiting, even after her coaching, USIU candidates would still be at the top of her resume pile before mine. I may have misunderstood her comment and so here to engage and learn…

That was kind of concerning honestly, it sort of negates the coaching she's doing if all you have to do is go to a specific school. I'm so grateful that I'm not in a traditional industry/employment. My school rarely comes up in conversation. It is always my portfolio first. But I've had people judge me because I went to a public university in a remote area even before knowing my capabilities. So this type of rhetoric is discouraging to say the least.

Very biased tho but that explains how our recruiting systems are biased I just don't get how it comes about.

Yea I second this, she is the real reflection of the society we are in right now. You might have a 1st class in some bush university and USIU with exposure and average grades, well... Those with money will still be top is definitely what she is saying😁

Honestly that comment was extremely bias and uncalled for from a career coach. I wouldn't want to be in an interview panel with her.

Unfortunately I didn’t go to USIU but I have done programs that would make me an all round candidate. It’s unfair to just consider specific universities!

@@wambuigichuki4393 it is not unfortunate rather fortunate. It would have been a better discussion if they just focused on being all rounded and not the university one went to.

Such a good and important conversation to have especially with graduates and young professionals. I would like to add that we also need to take into account the type of industry one aspires to work in, the type of organization, whether it’s a traditional role or not, for someone who has experience working as a civil servant, in a private company, NGO, academia and international organizations, what I’ve noticed is that different recruiters look at different things, qualities, skills.

Thank you Man talk. This is the kind of advice we would pay to get but here we are getting it for free. Very grateful. This added value to me. Kindly if possible bring more coaches that can help with giving us various skill sets like financial coaches, health coaches etc.

USIU is ranked at 7 with the likes of Strath and KU higher in the list. That dilutes her argument.

All you said is sure to build someone up, am sure it will for me. Am excited that right after listening I got enrolled on the alx_africa software engineering program something that has been a passion of mine. I did interior and fashion design back in university, I feel like this will not only grow my skills but also help me grow the design industry in Kenya. I thank God for the timing mantalk and Joan Thuo.

Min 13:50 is so disturbing. In an interview, she did with Lynn Ngugi she said that she loves working with underdogs. From a person who was made fun of because of not being as intelligent as the siblings, you should know better how that felt. That statement wasn't necessary at all.

So many questions she wasn’t able to answer. How is she even à recruiter? Mantalk please prioritize qualifications over social media clout when vetting who comes in as a guest. I was excited to watch this video but 5 mins in, she put me off when she refused to reveal which job she did in uni (how is she a career coach but refuses to reveal her first job?) and then cannot articulate herself and her thoughts aren’t flowing, and she is unable to answer simple questions. The worst part was her obvious biases , it’s like she has something against first class honors students and is here to promote usiu. Who said usiu does not produce first class honors students? Very weird.
