Thank you so much for all this good information on the molting process. I know this video is 3 years old and I don't see any newer video's. I just got my first spiny flower mantis and I am filled with all the things you said. Worried something is wrong, color changes, slower then usual. She did eat yesterday and drank a lot of water. But much slower then usual. She loves being out of her enclouser so when she seees me she will go up to the area she knows I open and wants me to get her out to hang out with me. Yesterday she hung out but was much slower then the norm. Her last molt was September 8th, so about a month since her last molt. I'm pretty sure she is in pre molt. I have been misting everyday a little bit, I'm concerned maybe that might be too much. I live in southern California and the temps are in the 70's during the day, with humidity pretty high. High 60' to over 80% some days. My temp gage inside has been stable it seems at 75F with a 65 -66% humidity. Just tonight the inside temp dropped to 72F 65humidity. I turned my little space heater up to get a little more heat in the room. It is now 79F 62% humidity. I'm going to lower the heater and see if the humidity goes up a bit. Like I said I'm new at this and I'm a worry wort! I just want the best for her and make sure she has a good molt. I am very grateful to have found your videos! They have been very helpful! If you have any input on what I am doing, right or wrong, please by all means speak up! Thank you! By the way not sure yet as to the sex of my mantis, just saying she until I know further. 😅😊

Hey! First time owning a mantis, my l3 molted the other day. I knew not to handle during the molt but not for a while after as well. I usually feed it outside of the enclosure as the enclosure itself is HUGE (I live in Florida so the humidity is terrible, humidity is good but it was TOO MUCH, only enclosure I was able to find that was well ventilated is HUGE compared to my mantis). I handled them around at least 10 hours after the complete molt. I also fed them. Everything seems normal with the mantis itself but I just want to make sure, is there anything I should look out for if I did cause some harm? Also, my mantis acted completely normal up until the molt. I went to mist the enclosure and I found the molt (didn't handle then but a bit later) is that normal?
@madmantis_11 ай бұрын
If it's acting normal then it's fine. I tend to wait awhile before handling because their bodies are very very soft after molting. If they're in a wrong position or they're poked accidently then it could lead to deformation or it could seriously hurt them. As long as you weren't rough with it I'm sure he's fine.

My majuscula molted today. This is its 2nd molt in my care. I got nervous because it 90% finished molting, but just the butt end of its abdomen was still in the old skin and it was hanging like that for a good hour and a half. I was worried because some comments online says the molts only take 10 to 30 mins. I thought it was stuck and i'd be getting tweezers to peel that tiny end off. The mantis finally slipped out of it and is now drying upside down. I guess the molts can take quite a while longer than 30 mins. Im glad i did not intervene. Its amazing how they nearly double in size per molt

Hi my spiny flower mantis molted yesterday. I didn't know it was going to and put a couple of flies in before. Hello! I recently got a spiny flower mantis as my first. I put a mini hygrometer in her(?) enclosure and was wondering what the humidity percentage should be during a molt.
@madmantis_ Жыл бұрын
Indoor humidity is usually ok. So between 30-40% is fine. The most important thing is to keep the mantis hydrated through food. So give it juicy flies and roaches. Also one spray of water per day is enough as well so it can drink.

Aaaa thank you so so much for this super informative video my gosh it's so so so helpful!!!😭 Our chinese mantis was moulting today and she fell and wasnt upside down anymore and one of her antenna is bent and she was wobbly but she was still moving around. All her legs are intact gladly but she might have some issues with her hunting arms where she wasnt moving it like before. can she heal? we plan on just not disturbing her, also we plan on feeding her mealworms since fruit flies or crickets are not an option due to outside circumstances, would that affect any of her future moults? And should we wait on the feeding after the moulting accident or should we focus on giving her food immediately? i'm so sorry about all the questions we are freaked out and want to give her the best help as soon as we can! Thank you so much again! Means a ton!
@madmantis_3 жыл бұрын
If she's still moving around then that's a good sign. Try to place her so she's hanging upside down if possible. You can hand feed her if she's got damaged raptorials and she can't grab prey anymore. I would wait at least three days to attempt to feed her. You can offer her some water for now and just watch her to make sure she's ok. It doesn't sound like it's too bad. She'll regrow and look better after her next molt.

My new shield mantis nymph has red coloring base to head. But is a huge eater. I’m worried about over feeding, and I heared that having too much moisture can hinder molting. And to keep things dry for up to four days. I feed once a day and water twice a day with light sprits. She always lowers herself into the moisture to drink so I’m not sure if I should stop watering as often….. big shrug 🤷♀️ 😂
@madmantis_2 жыл бұрын
Well you may be over feeding if the abdomen is giant and you continue to feed it. It's best to give them a giant meal every few days and just watch the size of their abdomen once they're adults but feeding once a day isn't an issue if it's little meals. Keeping them too moist is an issue only of you keep the substrate really wet and they have no ventilation. It sounds like you're not doing that so it should be ok. I mist 1-2 times a day and keep the substrate dry so there's no mold. Sounds like you're doing a good job 🙂.

Hello, I searched a while for a video like that (there is no much infotmation about that in german) and I have a question about my Deroplatys Desiccata. It is my first mantis and I kind of dont know what to do. My seller told me if the mantis changes her color it is about to molt and I should leave her alone (no feeding). But I didn't know to this point (now) that the most mantids stop to eat by themselfes. What I mean is that I didn't check if she could be hungry anyway. I just stoped feeding, like it was told to me. Then I got more worried, because nothing happens since four days (the last day I fed her). She still moves arround a bit and stuff. But my stepdad is like: Its okay, its normal, she wont starve and so on. So my question is: Do I exaggerate or should I try feed her? Because my stepdad have the insects and I am not able to get them by myself so I have to convince him if something is wrong. And I am a bit worried that she could starve. I am sorry for so much text and I hope someone can help me :D (Btw, your mantis is so beautiful)
@madmantis_2 жыл бұрын
It's no problem! So the mantis is ok without food if the abdomen looks full. Once it's very flat, that means it's starving. Mantises will stay still all the time but you'll see them hang a little more loosely when it's time to molt. You can try feeding it and if it smacks it away then you know it doesn't want to be fed and may possibly be molting soon. If you're able to, you can always send me a video of it on my Instagram and I can take a closer look. I hope this helps 🙂

There's not really one good answer. It could have been that maybe she wasn't hydrated enough or her environment was too dry. If you notice them molting don't turn on the light or move their home around cuz that stresses them out and can cause a mismolt. Sometimes it's just bad luck.

@@madmantis_ ah okay - thank you! - I thought real plants or moss - if that can be cultivated in there.
@madmantis_3 жыл бұрын
@@fumomofumosarum5893 you can have real plants in there but like I said, that may affect humidity levels. You're more than welcome to try to keep it in there and see how it works out. Some people do that and then place the mantis in a feeding container when it's time for food.

Hey can I ask how can I tell if a mantis properly moulted. The situation I have now is that I accidentally hit the cup my mantis was in while he was moulting. It seemed to just come out from his previous skin. Now he’s not moving at the top but it seems like he moulted properly
@madmantis_3 жыл бұрын
It's fine. Falls during a molt though can be fatal. Your mantis is just drying up his new skin and should be good to go in a few days.

Hi there, my mantis has fallen and is now malting on the ground. She looks all bent and mangled. I cut away where the skin that was coming away from her head and neck but still she still doesn't look right. Her abdomen is still pulsing so I think she's still alive. I will leave her and check on her in a day or two. I have sprayed her enclosure in hope it will help with her shedding.

@@codyengelen5456 Try and get it to hang on a stick so it's not on the ground. If it's able to hang and the legs are ok, then it has a better chance at surviving and reaching the next molt.

How old are they in their first molt
@madmantis_3 жыл бұрын
It depends. Some molt within a week or two if they're well fed and kept at higher temps. Sometimes it takes three weeks if so.

@@madmantis_ my mantis is nearly 2 weeks he isn’t showing any signs apart from he likes his mesh top so I’m just spraying it daily and keeping an eye out

Can a mantis molt without hanging please tell
@madmantis_3 жыл бұрын
I've seen some younger ones molt on the ground but it's dangerous. Some ground species molt naturally on the ground as well.

My mantis is adult now and got wings but one isn’t in place and I’m worried that she won’t be able to fix it (she molded yesterday) I don’t know what to do :(

It's ok! Wrinkled wings aren't a big issue. If she's eating and drinking normally then she'll be ok.
