I ran an M240i auto for 2 years. I did a 50 mile round trip commute daily, and it was perfect. Quick, comfortable and understated. The drivetrain was superb, and definitely the star of the show. Unfortunately, that's about it, if you really like driving. Big power and rwd sounds perfect, but with steering with absolutely zero feel and lack of accuracy, it doesn't work out that way. That's further compounded by the lack of an LSD. The lack of an LSD made knowing what the rear end was going to do quite unpredictable. It was great for beating people away from the lights, or pounding the motorway, but it really lacked fun or an engrossing drive. I swapped for an M2C which I continued to commute in for a few months. It was 'okay' to commute in, but not great. It's obviously not as comfortable, and the DCT in traffic was tricky to read at times, although a software update has softened that. The biggest difference is in how sharp it feels, the steering is direct and accurate, and you can nail the nose in to an apex and feel what the front end is doing. The M240i had zero feel. The M2C isn't exactly full of feel, but it's night and day over the 240. Comfort is my preferred setting, as Sport is just artificially heavy. Obviously the LSD makes a massive difference to how predictable the car is under throttle too. Probably not of interest, but running costs are also significantly higher for any M car. More services and more expensive services. Insurance isn't much different. Fuel usage is a lot worse. The B58 is pure magic, quite how it managed to be so frugal was beyond me. The M2C is a lot thirstier, but as it's now more of a toy, it's only really used for fun. On a good run you can scrape high 20s though.
@64bakes2 жыл бұрын
I also own an M240 and have had almost the same experience as yours. It's a car you really want to enjoy but with the vague steering and lack of LSD, the car just feels slightly too unpredictable in anything other than a straight line (and even dodgy in a straight line in bad conditions), to properly enjoy through the twisty bits. It's a shame really, but it does make up for it by being a fantastic long distance motorway muncher. MPG is fantastic, it's very comfortable, a nice place to sit and very solidly built, etc. I'm thinking about experimenting with better tyres to see how much of an improvement in rear end predictability I achieve, but ultimately it's a bit of a handful by almost all accounts. I'd also add that the engine does make a great noise, but you do tend to notice early peak torque when you're climbing up the rev range and it feels like you aren't making much progress, although it does sound very nice.

I somewhat agree but find the 240i steering to still have more feedback than any Audi S line car or golf R. It’s definitely not great but with a decent set of tires it goes from a 4/10 to a 6/10. The b58 is a gem though and the nimble platform still makes for great canyon carving fun, but that’s the extent of performance driving I’d do without an LSD at the very least.

I bought an M140i instead of an older E90 M3. I did 15k plus miles per year pre-COVID and didn’t fancy the fuel bills nor the general running costs and potential bork factor (bearings and throttle actuators). My car is more than fast enough and costs buttons to run; £150 VED, I’ve average 29mpg on 20 months, rear tyres were £280 and three years servicing was £299. It looks like a 1 Erie’s and no one bats an eyelid which suits me just fine. My car has been fine on the stock MPSS’s. It’s needs a bit of respect in cold / wet but so do most higher powered rear wheel drive cars. It’s certainly not an un-drivable death trap that the internet would have you believe. It’ll never be a point and shoot car like a Golf R or an S3.

I known Mr Jayemm said it just feels like its slowing down, but just for avoidance of misunderstandings: The engine does not give max power at 4000rpm, it is quite a bit higher. 4800-6500 rpm to be exact, as far as I have found. Max acceleration is had by shifting as late as possible, such as just before the rev limiter kicks in. That might be a good reason to wind it out, even if there is no apparent "high rpm kick"

The steering feel isn’t great, maybe a 4-5/10 with runflats and a 6/10 with MP4S, but the platform is nimble and the motor is fantastic. I wouldn’t do anything heavier than canyon carving with this car though, wouldn’t touch a track without an LSD at the very least. All things considered it’s one of the best compromised and Jack of all trades coupe you can buy. I push this car to it’s limits and you’d have to be a madman to push the m2 to its limits on a curvy road. With that being said, after 2.5 years of this car I’m ready to probably move to an M2C.

So I went for the 335d GT - slightly longer wheelbase, loads of room for the rear passengers and you can get a single bed in the back (moving flat, not a permanent, dogging fixture) without shifting the front seats forward. And when you floor it, it takes a moment to confirm that you do, indeed, want to launch, then it launches. Only real drawback so far is that when you open the rear hatch(?)boot thing, and it’s raining, it dumps about a 1/2 litre of water into the boot area. Hmmm. And that rear ‘fastback’ window - no wiper or squirter yet, somehow, it stays utterly dry and clean, even after a 300 mile trip back up to Scotland on roads that were bright white with salt.

It's a business. If you are selling a remap that gives 350bhp, and some other tuner is selling a remap on the same vehicle that only gives 320bhp, who is going to sell the most 'product' ? Who are the majority of customers going to use, for their remap product ? Most customers just see a number, and think higher is better, without understanding the full facts. The more up to date B58's are actually giving slightly lower bhp readings because they are fitted with an OPF/GPF. The B58 in the Supra has a different map to the one in the M240i/M140i and the map in the M340i is different slightly again, because it is a different weight car and the map reflects this. The 335bhp figure was for the M140i/M240i and is accurate.

@@DjNikGnashers wow wow calm you storm, im not saying your wrong. You make valid points im simply saying others in the business may have equally valid points regarding their professtional integrity which you clearly don't rate too highly. I'm not in the business but I'm not so arrogant to believe everyone is wrong and I am right just because I say so. What the name of your company maybe people should only come to you for tuning and dyno as you do a better job than every other company, am I right?

@@markrhoden68 Mate, I'm sorry if I came across as preaching, honestly, I am just trying to give good advice. I wasn't trying to be in any way aggressive, genuinely mate. I just read so many comments, usually by youngsters with too much testosterone and not enough experience, and what I read is a complete joke lol, yet they will argue until they are red in the face that they are right, and their tuner can make 450bhp from a remap lol it's ridiculous mate.

Hi Jay, thinking of moving from my mk7.5 fiesta ST to an m235i/m240i. You think this would be a good move or any other cars I should consider? Looking for something with a nicer interior but still fast

I had an E92 (coupe) 335i. Two downsides: it needs an LSD and the computer is a terrible nag. Otherwise brilliant and VERY quick. Without all the "M" stuff people let you out at junctions and Audi idiots don't know what they are taking on... Tweak the Turbos!

From what I remember this cars had some kind of upgrade to the rear axle compared to M135i etc. But the do not come with LSD? What is it that I ramember then?

The only newish BMW I would want is M2 Coupe LCI with BMW Manual Gearbox or M240i Coupe with LSD and BMW Manual Gearbox.

I'd love you to drive a properly sorted unmodified M2C manual (based on your comments) and report back. I know someone who's got one.

I think I’m going to buy one. A good exchange for my 996 Turbo

Looked at one but being 20 insurance is obscene, so most likely looking at the new yaris or an audi s1 which are far more reasonable
@Holdeenio3 жыл бұрын
I ended up buying the M140i for that exact reason. I found insurance much more affordable with direct line... roughly 40% cheaper than the M240i 🧐

What about the 230 4 cylinder turbo model? It would be lighter up from helping agility and you can use more of the performance all the time. But is it no more economical than the 6 in the real world? Could a remap of the 6 move the peak power further up the rev range making the low end more usable with a bit less torque?

I think the less 'shouty' looks maybe appealing to some but as a younger guy it puts me off. I know it's not an M car but it is still a fast performance car - though it looks just like any regular 'M-sport' diesel, when in reality it's a bit of a weapon. Some fatter wheels and tyres and maybe a 30mm drop would do the trick!

I think the M140i is the better buy. More practical and individual enough to avoid coming across as a poor man's M2. Love manuals but auto for these every time

How would you rate the manual over the auto? Going to look and maybe purchase a manual over the weekend. 2016 m240i.
@daveandhisdogs3 жыл бұрын
I bought a manual m2 last June, non comp pack and although I loved the look, it didn’t live up to the hype for me. Suspension too hard, too much turbo lag and an uninspiring engine. Maybe less with the 240i is more but it just looks a bit pants ...
