What I don't understand about this mod is why do you need a solenoid? If you jump the two terminals on the glow plug relay, the plugs turn on and away you go. So why not just run two wires from the top of the glow plug relay to a switch?

Ok so I bought a new solenoid for my 86 m1009, the top red and pink wires has 12 volts, key on and off the blue wire has about 12 volts, orange wire with key on never has 12 volts, if I spliced a push button to the blue wire to the solenoid, would it fix this? New AC60G plugs too btw
@seanregister41394 жыл бұрын
I'm not as familiar with the glow plug controller on the CUCVs, since I totally bypassed mine, but the principle is the same. If that blue wire has 12 volts to it at all times I wouldn't use it for the activation terminal. I can't remember how the military glow plug system works off the top of my head, but Steel Soldiers has the entire wiring diagrams for them. Personally I prefer to not splice into the old stuff just in case it back feeds power into another circuit or the old controller and fries something. I'd rather run a new circuit altogether to avoid any issues. If you disconnect the activation wire from the glow plug controller card and then connected your switch to it, you could use the same wiring without worrying about back feeding a circuit or into the card. I don't think you would have an issue splicing in, but its just my preference to go with new wiring.

Sean Register I didn’t know if a push button would be bad thing or not, I don’t want to spend a whole bunch of money on another card for it, I’m not that good with wiring as well but if a push button would make the glow plugs work to make it run I would risk it

Greeting I want to switch my m1009 to 12v can you help me? I know I need to bypass the resistor ..... turn off the driver's alternator and remove the first battery or connect them in parallel But what should I do with the other wires Someone also mentioned to me the solenoid relay should I bypass it or? I already have a 12v starter installed
@seanregister41393 жыл бұрын
Make sure you installed the rear starter bracket also, its absolutely necessary. I removed the resistor just to get it out of the way. You have to have two batteries so just wire them parallel instead of series. If your glow plug system still works once you have bypassed the resistor, keep it for as long as it does. Usually the issue is they have gone bad and its not easy to find a replacement. I can't remember if the original military solenoid works on grounding the connection. If it does the principle is the same but your push button switch would run to a ground instead of a power connection. I removed the wires for the second alternator entirely, I don't remember where exactly in the wire loom they connected, but I believe it was in the back area of the engine. I didn't want to have to worry about them possibly shorting out against the engine or exhaust.

@@seanregister4139 Thank you Can you just tell me if the same altenator is 1 and 2 .... I ask because my gen2 burned out so I thought to switch gen1 to its place? And is there any ignition relay that needs to be removed?

12v conversion on the CUCV? (Don't see the resistors)
@seanregister41395 жыл бұрын
Yes, this one had belonged to the forestry service who had begun parting it out after knocking a hole in the transfer case. It was missing the starter and alternators so it made sense to go ahead and convert it to 12v as it's easier to find. I removed the resistor from the firewall.

I understand that the square filter assy has a fuel heater in it, do you wire that heater alomg with the glow plugs?
@seanregister41395 жыл бұрын
No sir, the fuel heater is on a separate circuit.

@@seanregister4139 Can I add it to my manual glow plug switch, or should I wire up a second on/off switch. I am putting a 6.2 where a TBI 350 used to be so the vehicle has no supporting wiring.
@almonjacob34965 жыл бұрын
What is the second small terminal on the solenoid wired to? I would assume it needs to be to ground.
@seanregister41395 жыл бұрын
Nope, these solenoids are grounded via their connection to the body or frame, its one of the nice things about them. If you are using a Ford starter solenoid the extra terminal marked I is for sending voltage to the coil to help boost those old engines to start. In this application you don't need to connect anything to it, but if you want, you can wire your glow plug light to this terminal.
@LamzLamz7146 жыл бұрын
So where in the fuze box are u running that red wire to?
@seanregister41396 жыл бұрын
at the 2:53 mark you can see which terminal I used. Basically there are several connectors in the fuse block that you can plug into. Some are hot at all times and some are only hot when the key is on. I prefer using those connectors. You can check them with your test light to see if they are always hot or hot with key only.

How many volts should you be getting at the plug itself?
@seanregister41397 жыл бұрын
The system on this truck has been changed to a 12 volt system like a civilian vehicle so it's twelve volts. Even when it was a 24 volt system, there was a resistor which cut the 24 volt in half to 12 volts to the glow plugs...

Relay and solenoid are different things that work differently
@connaryoung90087 жыл бұрын
do you wire it directly to the glow plugs themselves?
@seanregister41397 жыл бұрын
Yes, one terminal goes directly to the battery or a power terminal block if you have one and the other directly to the plugs. You can usually use the existing glow plug harness.
@connaryoung90087 жыл бұрын
Thank-you so much.
@evanleigh46045 жыл бұрын
Didn't work...
@seanregister41395 жыл бұрын
Then you didn't do it right. It's a simple solenoid system where power to the activation terminal causes the solenoid to close and send current to the plugs. Either your wiring is wrong or you have a bad solenoid.
